When we exercise hard, we burn fat. But have you ever wondered where exactly the fat goes?

Some doctors think that fat is changed into heat and given off in the air. Others think the body burns it. Some even joke that someone comes and takes it. That's why you always weigh less in the morning.

Now a new study from Australia solves the mystery(迷). “The correct answer is that most of the fat is breathed (呼吸)out as CO2. It goes into the air.” says the study.

Scientists followed the atoms (原子) in 10 kilograms of fat as they are lost. They found that 8.4 of those kilograms are breathed out as CO2 through the lungs (肺). The other weight, 1.6 kilograms, becomes water and leaves the body.

“None of this is easy to understand because we can't see the CO2 we breathe out.” said the study's lead expert.

Does that mean you can lose more weight by breathing more? It is not as easy as you think.

Breathing more than the body's metabolic rate (新陈代谢速度) can make you uncomfortable. You may feel dizzy(眩晕的) and become unable to see, move or feel, according to the study.

So how can people lose weight healthily? The key is to eat less and move more. You may have heard this many times. During a day, a 70kg person breathes out about 200g of CO2. So if the same person wants to lose weight, he or she can do some light exercise, for example, walking fast. This can help lose 240g of CO2.

    (1) Where is the new study from?
    A . Japan. B . Australia. C . Canada. D . America.
    (2) According to the new study, where does our fat go when we exercise a lot?
A . The body burns it. B . Someone comes and takes it. C . It is changed into heat and given off in the air. D . Most of it is breathed out as CO2.
    (3) What will happen to people if they breathe more than the body's metabolic rate?
A . They will lose weight healthily. B . They will feel comfortable. C . They may become unable to move. D . They may become healthier.
    (4) Which of the following is the best way to lose weight?
A . Sitting still and breathing more. B . Sleeping a lot and breathing more. C . Eating less and exercising more. D . Eating more and doing some light exercise.
    (5) The passage mainly tells us ______.
A . where fat goes when we exercise B . why we can lose weight healthily C . how we should do some exercise D . what we should do to become fat

    Cell Phone Madness

When I opened the box at my 12th birthday party, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really got a cell phone!

As soon as I got to my school the next morning, I showed off my phone and asked everyone for their number. It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. Luckily I didn't get caught using it. I was pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I got Grade D for the first time. To make matters worse, my mom had to sign the test. It was hard to show my mom the paper. She never expected “D” on my tests. Well, finally, I showed her and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed(失望的).

Weeks passed and my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They would say, “We have noticed that you never pay attention to us. It's like you have your own little world now and we don't communicate as much with your phone.” I acted like they were wrong, but then I started to wonder if it was true that I was spending too much time on the phone.

A week later I tried going a whole day without a cell phone and it didn't go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different point of view towards cell phones.

Phones really take you away from the rest of the world.I'm not saying that phones are bad and not to use them, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day. My phone took away time from my homework and from my family. It also affected my grades.

I will keep using my phone, but I will have it under better control.

    (1) When did the writer get his cell phone?
    (2) Why didn't the writer pay much attention to the teacher?
    (3) What grade did the writer get from the test?
    (4) How did the writer's mother feel when she saw the test paper?

British people pride themselves on their polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word 'sorry'—even when they don't really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they would start by saying 'Sorry to bother you. Do you know what time it is?' If they're five minutes late for an appointment (约会), they would generally greet the person by saying 'Sorry I'm late!'

They use the word 'sorry' in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions (释义) of 'sorry' are: 1) feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck; 2) feeling regret because you've done something wrong. Now, think about this. Normally, when they want to ask a stranger a question, they start with 'Sorry to bother you'. In this situation, they aren't saying sorry because they feel sad for that person or because they feel regret.

So what does 'sorry' really mean? And why do British people use it so much? Well, in the British culture, saying 'sorry' is a way to be polite, especially to people who they don't know very well. It's also a very clever way to get what they want. In a recent experiment, an actor went up to a different strangers on a rainy day to ask if he could use their mobile phones in order to make a call. When he went up to one group of strangers and asked them without saying 'sorry' first, he was only 9 per cent successful in borrowing their phones. However, when he said 'sorry' to another group of strangers about the bad weather before asking if he could use their mobile phones, he was 47 per cent successful. So maybe saying 'sorry' is not just being polite, but it is also a good method to get what they want too!
