Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

This is an old English saying. Have you heard of it before? It means that we must go to bed early and get up early in morning. Then we shall be healthy. We shall also be rich (wealthy) and clever (wise).

This is true. The body must have enough sleep to be healthy. Children of young age should have ten hours' sleep every night. Children who do not have enough sleep cannot do their work very well. They will not be wise and they may not become wealthy!

The body also needs exercise. Walking, running, jumping, swimming and playing games are all exercise. Exercise keeps the body strong.

Exercise also helps the blood (血液) to move around inside the body. This is very important. Our blood takes food to all parts of our body. The head also needs blood. Exercise helps us to think better!

I'm Kevin, a student of Grade 9. Most of my friends walk to school, but I like to ride my bike each day. I wake up at 7:00. After I wash my face and eat breakfast, I throw the schoolbag on my back. Do I have my books and homework? Yes, I do.

I take my bike, jump onto it and ride to school at 7:30. "See you later, Mum," I say.

I pass my friends when I ride by. "Hi, Kevin!" they greet me when I pass. Mary does not want to ride with me. She does not like to carry a schoolbag. She likes to carry her books in her arms when she walks. She likes to kick the autumn leaves. But she likes to look at the flowers best.

Not me! I like to ride my bike to feel the fresh air in my face. When I get to school, I lock my bike in the bicycle park. I walk across the sports field to say hi to Mr Brown and wait for my friends in our classroom.

Martin had a lot of friends at school. He 1 told his family how many friends he had. 

One day, his father called him for a bet (打赌). "Martin, I bet you for the bike you wanted."

"Really?! What's the bet? " Martin couldn't believe his 2 .

"You do not have as many friends as you think. Not everyone is 3 friend."

Martin asked, " 4 can I test whether they are my friends?"

"I have something special. 5 me."

A few minutes later, Martin saw his father walking back, looking like he was carrying something heavy. But Martin could not see anything.

"This is a magic chair. Take this to the club, and sit on it 6 . Then you can tell who are your real friends," his father said. 

The next day when Martin was in the club with the "chair", he asked everyone together and said, "Friends, you are about to see my magic here. 7 closely."

Then Martin tried sitting on the chair. But he fell. Everyone laughed. 

He made another try and fell again. The laughs 8 .

Martin kept trying and fell.

He tried again but did not fall this time. He saw John, Abram, Julie, and Terry carrying him up 9 he would not fall. The others still laughed. 

Now he 10 his real friends.

Homeschooling

What do most people remember about their school days? Playing with classmates during breaks, eating food in the dining hall, or going to the headmaster's office, perhaps. But 850, 000 teenagers in the United States don't experience these things, because they are homeschooled. They don't go to a regular school.

MONDAY. July 10

I'm Dylan and I'm 14 years old. This is my third year of being homeschooled by my mom, a university professor(教授). A lot of people ask me how I feel about it. They ask, "Do you miss being in school with other kids?"

Well, my daily life is different from the daily lives of millions of children who go to regular schools, but I'm enjoying my time with my mom. I'm learning things at my own pace. We can go fast or slow. depending on the subject. These days, I'm reading books that most kids only read when they get to college. I'm studying French German, art, and the his tones of the world-things I'm very interested in.

A lot of kids think I never get to communicate with other kids, but that's not true. I get together with the other homeschooled kids during our weekly sports games and at social events. I don't just study at home. My mom takes me to all kinds of field trips-to museums, theaters, libraries and lots of other cool places. And college? I'm not worried about it. I know I'm preparing myself well for it.
