It never occurred to me to think about my future job till I entered high school. In the years before high school, I 1 much on football and music. That was 2 I spent most of my spare time. After I entered high school, my 3 for civil engineering (土木工程) inspired me to make greater efforts. 

I found my way to civil engineering 4 when I read an article about the Los Angeles earthquake in 1994. Its consequence was so awful that I was totally shocked. During the earthquake, many buildings fell down. The disaster led to heavy casualties ( 伤 亡 ). The 5 sent me into thinking about how the building projects could be safer, and how I could get them that way. From then on, I 6 to learn civil engineering. 7 different kinds of buildings is a form of recreation for me. Sitting on my bicycle for hours watching the houses around me has made me feel the 8 to shape our buildings into solid ones. 

To achieve my ambition, I must 9 that I can get high grades in all my subjects. In school, I am truly fond of science and good at math. 10 , my high school years had been challenged. My poor writing skills used to 11 me a lot. Fortunately, I had a strong wish to achieve my dream. It was the desire, which 12 me to keep practicing, that helped me overcome my shortcomings. 

Over the years, I have learned to stick with things that I find right 13 . This character will stay with me till my efforts 14 . That, combined with my longstanding curiosity about 15 our world, is what will make me a great civil engineer someday soon. 

It was my last class before summer break, and I was finishing up the first year of a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in poetry. Unsure if I deserved a 1 in the program, I worried I wasn't as2 as my peers. When the professor asked about our summer 3 , I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle (闲散的)，so without much 4 , I burst out "gardening". Surprisingly, my professor nodded and mentioned Emily Dickinson loved gardening. Emily Dickinson, a great American poet, studied plants as a 5 . But I was in my twenties and had no gardening 6 .

A few days later, I 7 some seedlings in a store. I thought I should get some. At least I could say I had 8 gardening. Wait, was that a jalapeno (墨西哥辣椒)? I 9 it up.

Over the summer, the plant grew, not big but 10 . I was proud. Maybe I didn't have 11 . But then I had to move out of my apartment for some reason. I 12 with my friends. It was December when I found my new apartment, and my jalapeno was suffering: its 13 had fallen off. I set it next to a window by the kitchen sink, and 14 for the best.

I 15 to work hard in school. Then spring came. My plant grew with new leaves. And it flowered when I 16 my graduate paper, a book of 17 , in May.

I was washing dishes one day when my professor called. "Your poems are strong..." he said. I'd done it! I went back to the dishes, but suddenly I found the flowers 18 my jalapeno were gone. Had I done something 19 ?  I looked closer. Where a flower had been, a tiny green fruit 20 through.

On October 13, a small plane flying to Chile accidentally crashed into a mountain in the Andes. How some of the passengers 1 to live is one of the greatest survival stories ever told. 

The survivors stayed inside the remains of the plane, using seat covers for blankets, and waited for a 2 that never came. Days turned into weeks. It was urgent to find a way to 3 . Three of the passengers—Canessa, Parrado, and Vizintin volunteered to 4 through the mountains to search for help. When they left, each man wore5 clothes: three pairs of socks, a plastic bag around each foot to keep the water out, boots, four pairs of trousers and four sweaters. Many of the clothes came from those who died in the crash. The three men 6 that they would survive and bring back help. 

For part of the first day, they were glad to make some 7 . But as the land and weather changed, climbing became 8 . After several days, they reached what they thought was the top. They had imagined this moment for days. On the other side of the top, they hoped, would be a valley leading down and out of the mountains. However, they saw the same snow-covered tops. All hope wasn't 9 . Although they were still in the middle of the mountains, Parrado 10 two low tops far away that didn't have snow. If they got there, they would be out of the Andes. 

Within the following days, they walked towards the two low tops. Little by little, the landscape began to change. Snow 11 completely, and flowers were everywhere. "This is the valley," Canessa said. "This is the way out." Then things of humanity started to appear—a few cans on the ground, some farm animals in a field. By December 21, the extremely

12 men made it to the town of Los Maitenes, and a rescue team was sent immediately to search for the survivors who were still high in the Andes. 

Finally all of the remaining survivors were 13 . The memories of the crash in the Andes would be with them forever, but for now, their terrible 14 was over. They had made it out—15 . 

"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." This 1 has stuck with me since the first time I read it. And it just makes so much 2 .

Just the other day I caught a cold, the flu made me feel so 3 and sleepy. How I wished it was a 4 already. But it was Monday. I had to go to work.

We have a care taker at work. Her name was Lucy, who usually 5 some nice lunch for us. She asked me with 6 if I was ill. After realizing that I was not okay, she was 7 me.

As this serious illness made me 8 , Lucy hurriedly went to the hospital to fetch some medicine to 9 my headache. Her kind gesture and 10 melted my heart. I mean, she didn't have to do that but she went out of her way to 11 it for me. I felt so good, I felt loved, I felt visible and it was a huge 12 .

Life is made up of the 13 things. These little things go 14 most of the time so that we might ignore them. But they're the biggest things and 15 the best things. If you can collect these little things, you'll 16 feel alone. These little things give hope and 17 for doing more and doing better.

Therefore, if something 18 makes your soul smile, note it and let it 19 on your mind and be remembered during dull days that life may 20 .

Kwan e Stewart, a devoted vet（兽医） in San Diego, had reached a point of burnout in his career. The animal 1 where he worked was full of abandoned pets as people 2 to deal with the ongoing economic decline. In those days, animals would be euthanized （安乐死） if they. weren't 3 in seven days. The cruel reality deeply troubled Stewart, even leading him to consider 4 his profession.

One fateful day, outside a convenience store, he 5 a homeless man with a dog suffering from a visible skin issue. The man, 6 for a solution, shared his dog's suffering. Stewart examined the dog and then 7 some medicine to him. In tears, the man thanked Stewart, saying "Thank you for not 8 me". The very words served as a wakeup call to Steward and inspired his next 9 .

Stewart began working as a street vet during his free time, determined to 10 on his own. Over a nine-year period, he provided 11 medical care for over 1,000 homeless people and their pets and in 2020, he created a nonprofit organization Project Street Vet.

For Stewart, the most rewarding aspect of his work lies in the one-on-one 12 with the homeless. By 13 helping their cherished companion, Stewart helps 14 their faith in humanity. Their gratitude fuels him to continue his mission, offering 15 to those facing awful circumstances.

My phone rang. It was a text from an unfamiliar number, showing a photo of a smiling man in his 30s. "What a strange picture to receive!" I thought to myself. 

For the past three years, I have been getting texts meant for this man, Jared. When the second text came, I was a playful sixth grader. 

"My Mom just told me that the Football Club will host a free barbeque dinner on Saturday! Hope you all will enjoy it, " it said. 

"YUMMMY!" I carefully responded. 

The story of Jared became deeper. I learned that he was part of the" Bowery Mission, " which sounded like a gaming group. Looking it up, I realized it was an organization that helped poor families. This was around the same time I stopped volunteering in my community. I spent more time taking art classes and trying different sports. I then joined the group texts. When a message came about donating food, I texted back, "Count me in!"

However, I started to feel bad about this lie. A man sent a long message, talking about the hopeless moments in his life. As I imagined what a good friend Jared could be, I felt ashamed that I was unable to provide the support this man needed and realized that I was not even a good listener to my own friends. 

Throughout this time, I noticed how much Jared's life has changed and I have also been discovering who I am. Learning from Jared, I have grown out of the naughty self, made more efforts tor my community, and become a more understanding friend. Last month, I received another text. Yet, I replied:" Hey, sorry, this is-not Jared, but I hope he is doing well. "
