When I was a student, I didn't like to do housework. I thought that I was a little child and what I needed is to study hard to get good grades. So I didn't do any 1 at home.

One day, my mother 2 back home from work. She found that I had made a mess in the house. My books and clothes were everywhere. She was annoyed (恼火) and said to me 3 , "From now on, you must do some housework every day!" Hearing my mother's 4 , I felt unhappy. But I still did as she said.

Doing housework was more difficult than I had expected. I began to understand that life was not 5 for my parents. They had to do a lot of housework when they came back home 6 work. So I tidied my room and 7 my clothes. And I helped my 8 cook meals in the evening. My parents praised 9 for my changes.

Now I realize that doing housework can not only help my parents 10 also help me to learn many basic life skills.

Some people still live in their hometown. However, others may only visit {#blank#}1{#/blank#}once or twice a year. Millions of Chinese leave the countryside {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(search) for work in the cities. Among these is Hua Xing. He {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(live) in Wenzhou for the last 13 years. With a hard job {#blank#}4{#/blank#}a factory, he seldom visits his hometown. "I haven't been back for three years. It's {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(shame)," he says. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (develop) have been good in Hua Xing's hometown since 2002. For example, new roads {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(appear). A new school {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(build). However, some things will never change in his hometown. The big old tree is still beside the playground. Children in his time {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(usual) liked to play together under it. It was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}a happy childhood.  

The Chinese Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu is often called the sage(圣人) of poetry. Unlike Li Bai, this poet wrote in various styles, and his works were often innovative(创新的) in language and subject matter. His poems were also filled with meaning. 

His innovation was not at all welcome. The readers of his time rarely showed much appreciation of his original and innovative works. The masses in fact hated and scolded them. Like many artists, Du Fu was only recognised for his genius long after his death. 

Du Fu was born in Luoyang, Henan Province. Although he came from an influential literary family, his early attempts to gain a position in the government by way of the exam system failed repeatedly. He was 43 years old when he finally managed to hold an official position. This was the time when Emperor Xuanzong was attracted to the beautiful Yang Yuhuan and made her his concubine(妃子), which Du Fu severely criticised in his Song of the Beautiful Ladies. 

As the emperor got distracted from important government affairs, some military leaders were becoming too powerful. Du Fu took office in 755, and in the same year a rebel(叛乱) leader An Lushan led his army into the capital of Tang Dynasty. The emperor fled to the west and left the governing of the state to his son. Du Fu and his family took the road north to escape the rebels. 

The poet left his family and tried to get to the headquarters of the new emperor, but he was caught and held prisoner by the rebels in Chang'an. After order was restored again, Du Fu got back his position in the capital. However, he did not enjoy the favour of the new emperor and was given a minor provincial post. In 759 he finally left this disgraceful position and spent the rest of his life wandering around the country.

Huangshi, an industrial city in central China's Hubei province,  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（harvest）the benefits of intelligent technologies in the past decade. Mining may conjure up（使人联系到）images of a dirty, labor-intensive and dangerous sector. But that is not the  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（real）in Huangshi, where mining relies on unmanned machines, remote {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（monitor）technologies and intelligent coordination systems.

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（dress）in a blue work suit and white shirt, Daye Iron Mine worker Yuan Jianjun sits in front of several computers in a spacious command center. His eyes are fixed on the screens, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} show live images of underground mining machines and real-time data from sensors placed inside the mine.

In the past, Yuan worked underground in a very  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（dust）environment. "It used to be a challenging job both physically and mentally," he said. Now, machines are controlled {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（remote）from an office environment to collect minerals.

Tech support has reduced labor intensity and improved workplace safety, enabling more mining sector employees like Yuan  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（work）in a safer and healthier environment  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} previous generations. "It has become a decent job," Yuan said.

When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboat man. We had temporary ambitions of other sorts, but they were only temporary.

My father was a justice of the peace, and I supposed he possessed the power of life and death over all men and could hang anybody that offended him. This was distinction enough for me as a general thing; but the desire to be a steamboat man kept intruding(闯入), nevertheless. One of our boys in town, who went away and was not heard of for a long time, turned up as an apprentice engineer on a steamboat. This thing shook the bottom out of all my Sunday-school teachings. That boy was notoriously worldly, and I was just the opposite. There was nothing generous about this fellow in his greatness. He would always manage to have a rust y nail to scrub while his boat stopped at our town, and he would sit on the inside guard and scrub it, where we could all see him. And wherever his boat was laid up he would come home and show off in the town in his blackest and greasiest clothes, so that nobody could help remembering that he was a steamboat man; and he used all sorts of steamboat technical terms in his talk, as if he were so used to them that he forgot common people could not understand them.

This creature's career could produce but one result, and it was speedily followed. Boy after boy managed to get on the river. Despite many choices, pilot was the grandest position of all. The pilot, even in those days of trivial wages, had a princely salary—from 150-250 dollars a month, and no board payment. But our parents would not let us and our worry was that the next year would find us hunting for jobs with low pay again. So by and by I ran away. I said I never would come home again till I was a pilot and could come in glory.

I was getting more excited as we got off the train at beautiful Grand Central Station. After a tour at the Museum of Modern Art, we1 Radio City Music Hall and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. In one of the 2 in the area, I found a tiny boxed set of Peter Rabbit books, perfect for my 3 . Was there anything like Christmas in New York? Having experienced an exciting and tiring tour, we called a  4   back to Grand Central Station.

On the way home I realized that my handbag was gone—lost or 5  , I had no idea. All the magic of this special day  6  . I glumly(闷闷不乐地) imagined a crowded Department of Motor Vehicles and all the phone calls that I'd have to make to get my  7   cards replaced with new ones. And I'd never 8  all those precious photos to my daughters.

The days slipped by while I got rides to college and  9 going to the DMV( 车 管 所 ) at such a busy time of year. Then I got an unexpected 10 , a box with the return address of Radio City Music Hall.  11  , I opened it and shouted in a joyful  12   .

There was my old handbag, with everything 13  good inside—license, cards and photos—and one thing that hadn't been there  14  , a handwritten note, saying, "I found this handbag lying under the seat of my taxi by  15   . Merry Christmas!"
