任务型阅读

                                   I love Fridays. And so I celebrate Fridays.

    After dropping my son off at school I head to Starbucks to pick up a coffee treat or another. Then instead of driving straight home I take a long route through the most beautiful roads I can find. I see footballs being passed on lawns, hamburgers being thrown on grill(烤架), and parties everywhere swinging into action.

    The o0ther day I came out from the doctor's office happy over a positive prognosis(预断). Seeing the signs of spring around me-flowers, birds, sunshine, I was suddenly ready to celebrate.

    My mind rebelled. “What are you doing? It's Tuesday! Coffee treats are reserved for Fridays!” Why should Fridays be any more special than any other day of the week? Why waste six days while waiting to celebrate the seventh? Minutes later I was walking back to my car with a big smile on my face and a coffee in my hand.

    A small victory, to be sure, but it's also an accurate example of how many of us live our lives. We're waiting for conditions to be right before we allow ourselves to enjoy our time here on earth. Maybe when we finally graduate from college and get a job, it will be time to celebrate, or perhaps when our babies are old enough to be in school all day. We'll celebrate when the car is paid off, or enjoy life when we're finally able to retire.  What if we moved a little of that “Friday feeling” into our rainy-day Mondays, our dull Tuesday and our mid-week Wednesdays?

A. You must spend more time achieving it.

B. Surely our lives would be much happier as a result.

C. It seems as if the whole world is celebrating Friday!

D. But suddenly I realize how ridiculous that line of thinking was!

E. Find an excuse to celebrate and start sending out hose invitations.

F. I headed for the coffee bar that was located just around the corner.

G. And in that waiting we waste so much of life and happiness that can be found in our Todays.

    Recent studies have shown that there is a link between anxiety and intelligence and it is a positive one.Fear allows you to react to a potential threat in good time.Being too happy all the time means that you don't think about potential problems.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}But the response means that their imagination is highly active.An active imagination keeps you safe from threats.

    The general belief about anxiety is that it's a negative thing.Because suffering from anxiety is not pleasant,most of the people who deal with it hope they don't have to.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Science is showing that a little bit of anxiety is a good thing.

    In 2002,Israeli psychologists ran a test on 80 students.The students were under the impression mat they were there to appreciate artwork on a piece of software.However,the researchers rigged(在…上做手脚)the program.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}So they were men encouraged to contact IT.

    Finding IT brought new challenges.As the students left the room,they met various problems.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}someone also stopped them to ask them to complete a survey.The test found that the participants who really wanted to reach IT to fix the virus had the highest amount of anxiety.The students who had less anxiety couldn't focus.They stopped to complete the survey,pick up the papers,etc.

    Obviously,the anxious students had a greater sense of the threat.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Therefore,anxiety can actually give us higher chance to succeed!

A.So when does worry become a bad thing?

B.Thus,they tried their best to achieve their goal.

C.But this does not necessarily need to be the case.

D.Some students came across dropped papers as they walked by.

E.Instead of viewing artwork,the students found a computer virus.

F.Often kids and adults with anxiety have a very negative view of themselves.

G.People with anxiety are sometimes responding to a threat that doesn't exist.

    It is said that farmers or peasants, especially those in developing countries, are often criticized for cutting down forests. But a new study suggests that many farmers recognize the value of keeping trees.

    Researchers using satellite images found at least ten percent trees cover on more than one billion hectares of farmland.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Earlier estimates were much lower but incomplete. The authors of the new study say it may still underestimate the true extent worldwide.

    The study found the most trees cover in South America.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} North Africa and West Asia have the least.

    The study found that climate conditions alone could not explain the amount of trees cover in different areas.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}There are areas with few trees but also few people, and areas with many trees and many people. The findings suggest that things like land rights, markets or government policies can influence tree planting and protection.

    Dennis Garrity heads the World Agroforestry Center.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}The problem, he says, is that policy makers and planners have been slow to recognize this and to support such efforts.

    The satellite images may not show what the farmers are using the trees for, but trees provide nuts, fruit, wood and other products.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Even under drought (干旱) conditions, trees can often provide food and a way to earn money until the next growing season.

    Some trees act as natural fertilizers. They take nitrogen (氮气) out of the air and put it in the soil. Scientists at the Center say the use of fertilizer trees can reduce the need for chemical nitrogen by up to three-fourths. Trees also capture carbon dioxide, a gas linked to climate change.

A. Nor could the size of nearby populations, meaning people and trees can live together.

B. He says farmers are acting on their own to protect and plant trees.

C. Almost all of it is covered by trees.

D. They also help prevent soil loss and protect water supplies.

E. He devotes most of his time to making people realize its importance.

F. That is nearly half of the farmland in the world.

G. Next comes Africa south of the Sahara, followed by Southeast Asia.

    ⒉Analyze the problem

    Analyzing the problem will give you time to think of a proper solution. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} It can be a diagram, a flow chart or a list, etc.

    ⒊Plan a strategy(策略)

    Planning a strategy will help you waste less energy and time in trying all the solutions. This step includes knowing the advantages and disadvantages of a solution. In this way you can rule out the strategy that you don't find worthy to apply.

    ⒋{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Leave out the information that is not required for the solving of the problem. You need to be accurate with the details. Keeping the irrelevant(不相关的) information usually won't simplify the problem as we tend to overlook the relevant information.

    ⒌Carry out the solution

    Carrying out the solution in a correct way to get the expected result is important while solving a problem. You need to be creative while carrying out a solution just in case some other problem arises while applying the solution.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Managing your time is a lot like managing money.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} With 24 hours a day multiplied by seven days a week, your weekly time budget is 168 hours per week.

    Step 1:{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Estimate(估计) the amount of time per week you spend on each activity, such as class time, athletics fitness, socializing with friends and other hobby time and so on.

    Step 2: Assess your use of time.

a) Add together the total time you will use per week.

b) Now subtract(减去)the total time from 168 hours.

    If the number you get is negative, you have used more time than there is in a week. You should cut back in certain area.

    If you have time left over, ask yourself what choices can be made.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Volunteering? Friends? If your time used equals 168, great! Now take a look at any hours you may be spending in some areas that you want to start using in other ways.

    Step 3: Determine a goal and plan of action for better time use.

    What would you most like to do to better manage your time? You should consider using a calendar or planner(记事簿).{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Some tips: Color-code your calendar or planner by the activities listed above, and once you make a schedule, do your best to stick with it.

As the world struggles to deal with the climate crisis, some companies are working to remove polluting carbon dioxide from the air. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} But two US companies have recently made important progress.

Scientists say large amounts of CO2 must be removed from the CO2 atmosphere and stored. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} But there's so much CO2 in the atmosphere that just planting trees and protecting forests won't solve the problem. And, when plants and trees die, the carbon they've stored gets released again.

That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture (DAC). The science of removing carbon from the air is challenging, and it's still pretty new. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}So one puzzle for these companies is how to remove carbon without creating more pollution.

A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. The company heats up the limestone to separate out the CO2, which is concrete. The process is extremely expensive. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}That's a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere, but the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035.

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Some people worry that it will take too long for DAC technology to become powerful enough to make a difference. Others worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say the decision isn't to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.

A. Plants and trees do this naturally.
B. That's a huge and challenging goal.
C. Not everyone is excited about carbon removal.
D. Graphyte is another US company working on DAC.
E. The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO2 a year.
F. Most DAC processes require a large amount of energy.
G. As a matter of fact, CO2 is just a small part of the gases that make up air.
