An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn't walk steadily(平稳地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.

The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” The boy answered, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old son smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks(脸颊). Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

(1)、Why was the old man's food served in a wooden bowl?
A、Because the wooden bowl was light enough. B、Because the old man had broken a few bowls. C、Because there was only a wooden bowl left. D、Because the son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man.
(2)、Why did the husband lead the old man back to the family table?
A、Because he realized his mistakes. B、Because the old man didn't drop rice on the floor any more. C、Because the old man was served in a wooden bowl. D、Because a gentleman led him back to the family table.
(3)、What's the best title of the passage?
A、An old man and his son. B、A couple and their son. C、A wooden bowl. D、A dinner table.

Jenny looked at the store window. There was nothing that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll. It was $29.95. Unluckily, Jenny didn't even have the 95 cents.

As she crossed the street, she thought about doing her brother's housework, cleaning the floor, washing the dishes all month, but even then she would have only eleven dollars. Suddenly, something small and pink in the snow caught her eyes.

Jenny walked over and picked it up from the snow. It was a beautiful wallet. She opened the wallet and found many dollars and a woman's driver's license in it. Jenny put the wallet into her bag quickly. She turned around and walked back.

Jenny's heart beat(跳动) fast as she went into the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right. As she got to the Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grabbed(抓起) one and walked toward the checkout.

As Jenny was waiting to pay, her mobile phone rang. It was her grandma. Jenny's heart was suddenly filled with love and warmth when she thought of her. She put the doll down and answered the phone.

“Hi, Grandma? I'm going to be a little bit late tonight...Alright...I love you, too.” Jenny left the store and walked all the way to 301 West Street. The woman who answered the door looked sad.

“Here, I found this in the snow,” Jenny said.

“Oh, good God! This is the money for the orphanage(孤儿院)! Thank you!”

After doing her brother's housework for three months, Jenny finally got a Happy Hannah doll. She was so happy because she could play with her doll and look her grandma in the eye.

Drawing on a New Friendship

Last Saturday, I went to the park to draw. When I finished the outline of a girl, a shadow(影子)fell across my drawing.

"That's not a bad start", said the shadow. "Do you have any finished drawings?" I looked up to see a girl about my age.

I was displeased that someone was looking at my drawing and interrupted me. "Not bad?" I asked.

"No need to be angry." The girl handed a sketchbook(素描本)to me." Want to look at my drawings?"

I felt curious and traded sketchbooks with her. Her sketches of people were okay, but I was really attracted by her drawings of nature, like trees, rocks, and rivers, all done with great detail.

"Wow!You have some talent," I said. "What's your name?"

The girl took back her sketchbook and answered, "Emma Thompson."

"I'm Alice Ruiz, "I said." You draw so well. Are you in an art class?"

Emma replied, "No. The art class is full, so I have to wait until next term. Besides, you're a talented one. I really find it difficult to draw people, but you make it look easy."

"I have a great idea!"I said." Let's draw together! You can draw the nature views on one piece of paper while I draw the people on another. Then we'll exchange and finish each other's drawings. That way, both drawings would show off both of our talents!"

"That's not a bad idea, Alice, "Emma agreed.

About an hour later, we completed our drawings. I had drawn a boy walking with his dog. Emma had added a path and some flowers. Emma had drawn a beautiful tree, and I had added a girl reading under the tree.

"This was a fun idea, "I said." Hey, Emma, would you like to meet me here again to draw together?"

"See you next Saturday, Alice, "Emma said with a smile.
