Golden Rules of Good Design

        What makes good design? Over the years,designers and artists have been trying to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the essentials of good design. They have found that some sayings can help people understand the ideas of good design. There are four as follows.

          Less is more. This saying is associated withthe German-born architect Mies van der Rohe. In his Modernist view, beauty lies in simplicity and elegance, and the aim of the designer is to create solutions to problems through the most efficient means. Design should avoid unnecessary {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    More is not a bore. The American-born architect Robert Venturi concluded that if simplicity is done badly, the result is {#blank#}3{#/blank#} design. Post-Modernist designers began to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} with decoration and color again. Product design was heavily influenced by this view and can be seen in kitchen {#blank#}5{#/blank#} such as ovens and kettles.

    Fitness for purpose. Successful product design takes into consideration a product's function, purpose, shape, form, color, and so on. The most important result for the user is that the product does what is {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. For example, think of a(n) {#blank#}7{#/blank#} desk lamp. It needs to be constructed from materials that will stand the heat of the lamp and regular adjustments by the user. It also needs to be stable. Most importantly, it needs to {#blank#}8{#/blank#}light where it is needed.

    From follows emotion. This phrase is associated with the German designer Hartmut Esslinger. He believes design must take into {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the sensory side of our nature—sight, smell, touch and taste. These are as important as rational(理性的). When choosing everyday products such as toothpaste, we appreciate a cool-looking device that allows usto easily {#blank#}10{#/blank#}the toothpaste onto our brush.

    When I was a little girl, every time my dad was repairing something, he {#blank#}1{#/blank#}ask me to hold the hammer, and meanwhile, have a conversation with me. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.

    I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning, no matter what. Several years later I bought a house, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} my dad painted by himself for three days in the 80-degree summer heat. All he asked was for me to talk to him. But I was always busy, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(able) to find any time for conversation with him.

    One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(forget) some things we discussed {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(late). I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Later that day came a call {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (say) my father was in hospital. Immediately I bought a ticket for a flight and on my way I was thinking about all the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (miss) occasions to have{#blank#}8{#/blank#}talk with my dad.

    {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the time I got to hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I know about my dad, his deepest thoughts and dreams. After his death I learned more about him, and even more about myself.

    Young people{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (bear) in 1995 or later have another name in English——Generation Z.

    Now entering adulthood and soon to join the workforce, Generation Z grew up in a special period of time when technology developed fast and the Internet became{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (universe).

    It {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (believe) that Generation Z is the generation that is going to shape our future,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} is why policy makers are trying{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (he) best to understand these young people. Most people agree that biggest difference between Generation Z and other generations is how connected they are. This is a group of people who have been familiar{#blank#}6{#/blank#} social media as soon as they came to the world. It may be true that Generation Z-ers have a shorter attention span(持续时间){#blank#}7{#/blank#} a goldfish does, but since they grew up among social changes, they are more active in{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (political).

    Generation Z-ers are also culture creators.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (grow) up with the Internet has freed this generation from traditional cultural expression. These young people never{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (willing) let their creativity be limited by their parents or traditional rules.

    In his book, Intentional Living, author John Maxwell shares that back in 1976, he received a gift from one of his{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(assist). As he unwrapped the gift, he saw that it was a book {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(name) The Greatest Story Ever Told. He couldn't wait{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(read) it.

    But when he opened the book, he was{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(astonish) to see that the pages were blank. Inside the book was{#blank#}5{#/blank#}note that said, “John, your life is before you. Fill these pages with kind acts and good thoughts of your heart. Write a great story about your life.” The intention of writing the story of his life excited him. Then, he {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(begin) to write his book.

    Every day we live out our story through our words, actions and decisions. But we must remember to live with intention to focus on what{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(matter) most in life and to regain that focus when we get changed. Without intention, we can become unfocused in things{#blank#}8{#/blank#}needn't add to a life of significance and difference in our world.

    Life isn't perfect and it's always hard,{#blank#}9{#/blank#}we need reminders in our life from a friend, author, blogger, pastor or our inner spirit to re-focus us on the things that matter and make us live{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(positive).
