    Mike's eleventh birthday is next Saturday. He wants to have a dinner party at his house. He asks some good friends to his party. David and Sally are two of them. Now they are discussing (讨论)what they will buy for Mike.

    David: Hey, Mike's birthday dinner is next Saturday. Let's thin k about the food.

    Sally: Sure, does he like birthday cake?

    David: No, he doesn't. He is tired of(对……厌烦)butter(奶油)a lot.

    Sally: Well, what does he like?

    David: He likes burgers and fried chicken．

    Sally: That's great. I like them too. What about vegetable salad?

    David: No, he doesn't like. But he likes fruits.

    Sally: What fruits?

    David: I think his favorite fruits are apples and bananas.

They all have their McDonald's, their KFCs and their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings.  And of course, people are driving the same brands of Japanese or European cars.

    Then why is the foreign travel more popular nowadays? What do tourists hope to experience m a foreign country that they can not experience at home? The answer could be that people could be very interested in the past.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Most people travel overseas to find out what foreign countries' history and culture used to be like, not what they are like today. Tourists visit different kinds of museums in foreign countries so that they can learn their history and culture.

    Every country also has its own beautiful places for tourists to visit. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}It is not just its old buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, but also the people who live in it. This is why a country such as Thailand attracts millions of people. The tourists come mainly because of the friendliness of the people there. It is why the Pacific islands are also so popular. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    There once was a woman. She had a faithful (忠实的) dog. The dog was so faithful that she could leave her baby with the dog when she went out. (A) And after she returned, she would always find her baby safe.

    One day, the woman left the baby with the dog and went shopping. When she returned, she found something had taken place in the house. There were bloodstains(血迹)all over the bedroom. The woman then thought of her baby. She cried and started looking for him. Then she saw the faithful dog. It was licking(舔) its mouth. It seemed that it had just finished a delicious meal. The woman was angry and thought that the dog had killed her baby. Without thinking too much, (B)       .

    But as she continued looking for her child, she saw something else. Close to the bed, there was her baby and he was sleeping. And under the bed, there was a dead jackal (豺), The woman now understood what had happened. The dog tried to protect her baby from the jackal, but just now she killed the dog. How regretful she was!

    Rainforests are magical(神奇的)places on earth, full of life and beauty. They are homes, to millions of birds, insects, animals, and plants. These forests are the world's natural treasure(财富).

    Most rainforests are near the equator(赤道). Some of the largest are in Brazil, South Asia and Central Africa. There are several kinds. Each has different levels of rainfall and different types of soil and temperature.

    In equatorial rainforests, the temperature stays between 25 and 35 degrees during the year. These rainforests get a lot of rain-as much as 4, 000 millimeters per year. Monsoon rainforests are very different. They have long dry periods. Also, their temperature can change a lot from season to season.

    Rainforests are important for many reasons. One is their great diversity(多样性)of life. There are millions of species of insects, animals, and plants. Scientists still don't know about most of them yet. Many rainforest plants could help us make new medicines. Rainforests also keep the soil strong. And they may be important to the earth's climate.

    Unfortunately, rainforests are getting smaller every year. Farmers burn down trees for land. Large companies cut down trees for their valuable wood. Other companies build mines near forests.

    Environmental groups are trying hard to save the rainforests. Hopefully they can, before they're all gone.
