As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog”, “a mad dog”, “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative meanings. But in Western countries, dogs are considered to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in Western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is cruel(冷酷的). There are many other examples of how “cat” is used differently as well.

The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries. People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.

The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.

Many people like collecting things.  For some people, they don't throw away the unwanted things because they believe they may be useful one day.  For others, especially old people, old things keep memories of the past and old friends.  They carry a special meaning.  Collecting things can easily become a hobby.  When people really put heart into it, the hobby can do them much good.

Collecting makes people happy during their free time.  Collectors do not have to go outside for fun.  They keep collections at home: stamps, books, pictures, model cars, toy animals, etc.  It is always enjoyable to look at the collections.

Collecting keeps people busy, too.  When there is a new piece of collection, they need to find the right place for it.  Sometimes this new piece pushes them to read.  In this way, collectors learn new things from the hobby.

Collecting also gives people a reason to make new friends.  Collectors may want to meet other collectors to show new findings, to share stories, and to get advice.  So the hobby leads to travel.  Collectors take trips to meet new friends.  Their group of friends grows.  After years of sharing, collectors may become closer friends.

Collecting things helps people make good use of their free time.  It brings collectors a busy but happy life.

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项

The Maya (玛雅) number system(体系) appeared in the fourth century, which was about 1,000 years earlier than the time when the European number system was created. It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10 (十进制). The Mayan system had a base 20. This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes, 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable. Therefore, there were two important numbers in this system. Besides 20, the other important number is 5, which had a connection with the number of fingers and toes on one hand or foot.

The Mayan system used two symbols (符号). A dot (.) was used to mean the units ( one to four) and a dash (—) meant five. The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of nothing ( or zero). The most common symbol was that of a shell but there were several other symbols. It is interesting to learn that with all of the great experts on Maths and scientists in ancient Greece and Rome, it was the Mayan Indians who came up with this symbol zero or nothing. The following picture is a form of different numbers and how they would have been written.

From further study, people found that the 360 day calendar(日历) also came from the Mayan. They actually used base 18 when they made the calendar. Each month included 20 days with 18 months in a year. This left five days at the end of the year which was month in itself, full of danger and bad luck. In this way, the Mayans had invented the 365 day calendar.

 请阅读全文,并从下列方框里的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。

Scientists have found a connection between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} They had to think of as many ways as they could. Then, before solving the difficult problem again, they chose to do one of the following things: work out a difficult problem, work out an easy one, or take a 12-minute break.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Many students reported that they were daydreaming when doing the easy task. So the scientists believed that daydreaming might help them become more creative.

But how could daydreaming help the brain think creatively? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Even when you are

not actively working on a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about it, but you are unaware of it.
