John was traveling around the country in the town. One evening he was driving along a road and looking for the Sun Hotel. When he saw an old man at the side of the road, he stopped his car and said to the old man,“I want to go to the Sun Hotel. Do you know where it is?”

“Yes,” the old man answered,“I'll show you the way.”

He got into the car, and they drove for about twelve miles. When they came to a small house, the old man said,“Stop here.”

John stopped and looked at the house and said,“But this isn't a hotel.”

“No,” the old man answered,“this is my house. And now I'll show you the way to the Sun Hotel. Turn around and go back nine miles, then you'll see the Sun Hotel on the left.”

The food in White Rose Restaurant was cheap and good, but nobody seemed to want to eat there. There were very few people going to eat there. The owner was very worried about it.
Then he thought of a good idea. A few weeks later, his restaurant was always full of men and their girlfriends. Whenever a gentleman came with a lady, a kind waiter would give each of them a beautiful menu. The menus looked exactly the same on the outside, but there was an important difference inside. The menu that the waiter handed to the man gave the correct price for each dish and each bottle of wine, while the menu that he handed to the lady gave a much higher price! So when the man calmly ordered dish after dish and wine after wine, the lady thought he was much more generous than he really was! The man could make a good impression on the lady.

We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf. It stood outside a furniture（家具）shop. "Buy it,"she said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof-rack（车顶架）. I've always wanted one like that."What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too. As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea. After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake（超车）?" Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers（警官）inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church（教堂）. One of the officers came to me. "Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more help now?"I didn't quite understand. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You've been very kind. I live just down the road."He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. "Well, well," he said and laughed. "It's a bookshelf you've got there! We thought it was--er, something else."My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it's a bookshelf, but thanks again."I drove home as fast as I could.

   A group of frogs were travelling through the woods. Two of them, Nick and Jack, fell into a deep pit(坑). All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told Nick and Jack that they were as good as dead.
   Nick and Jack ignored(不理睬) what the other frogs said and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their strength. The other frogs went on telling them to stop, and that they were as good as dead. Nick listened to them and gave up. Finally, he fell down and died.
   Jack continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the frogs around the pit shouted at him to stop the pain(痛苦) and just die. Jack jumped even harder and finally got out. When he was out, the other frogs asked, “Did not you hear us?” Jack explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him all the time.

Dear Disappointed,

I know how you feel! For spring break, my family visited my cousins Sam and Kate. It was a long drive, so I had lots of time to make plans for the world's best vacation.

"You have been writing for a while!" said my dad." Are you working on the next great American novel?" "Maybe tomorrow!" I joked. "Now, I'm making a list of things to do with Sam this week." Because Sam is my age. We usually hang out when we all get together, while Tex and Indi play with Kate.

When we finally arrived, I went to find Sam." How about checking out the lake?" I said. "Nah, "said Sam." I have something more fun for us to do." "Awesome" I said, prepared to start checking off activities on my list. Sam turned on his computer." Which bat do you want to be?" Which bat?" I repeated." I got the best new computer game called Bat Adventure." Sam explained," Bats are the coolest creatures, you can learn all interesting facts about bats."

"Um, this looks fun" I said, "but it's not exactly on my to-do list." "All the things I want to do this week." I explained, "are all outside." "Oh, that's cool." Sam said." You do your thing. And I'll just restart the game in one player mode."

I wandered out of the room. And Kate called. "Zona, are you coming to play soccer with us?" "Sure, I guess for a minute," I said. Kicking the ball gently in Kate's direction. Kate gave the ball a huge kick. Pow! Tex ran after it.

"Shhh," whispered Tex, pointing at a hole. We saw two little fuzzy bats! They had mousy ears and their wings were spread." Goodness!" I laughed." Let's show Sam. He knows all about bats." Sure enough. Sam was really excited about our discovery. Later that day. We all looked up bat facts on Sam's computer.

I managed to do only a couple of things on my list that week. But I had some other great experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. So dear Disappointed, even though it's helpful to have lists, it's also good to stay open-minded. Life almost never goes exactly the way you plan. So if you are open to the possibilities, something even better can pop up out of nowhere and totally make your day.

In April 2021, a group of elephants started to walk north from their home in the wild in Yunnan. They quickly became stars and got a lot of attention from around the world. A team of eight people were following the elephants. They worked 24 hours a day, both on the ground and with drones(无人机).

The team shared some interesting moments of the elephants' trip on the Internet. The moments made people smile. For example, two baby elephants once fell down, and an adult(成年的) elephant had to use its long nose to help the babies stand. At another point, a sleeping baby elephant was on its mother's back. It moved its body and legs in the air. It seemed the baby elephant was dreaming about something funny.

These elephants were so cute. Some reporters from other countries even came to Yunnan. They got to know more about the elephants as well as the friendly people there.

No one knew why the elephants left home. Maybe they were looking for better food. Maybe they were lost. Maybe they were just having a good time.
