Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(real) prepared me for anything practical. I knew I felt like {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (make) a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea{#blank#}3{#/blank#} to do that. That's when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.

    I started my journey {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work,{#blank#}5{#/blank#}that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(decide) to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} did my family.

    Eventually, however, I {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(win) the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among {#blank#}9{#/blank#} candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(ask) me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out.

    Everybody knows that the United Kingdom consists {#blank#}1{#/blank#} four countries: English, Scotland, Wales plus Northern Ireland. However, about four hundred years ago Scotland tried to break away from English {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(influent). The Scots wanted to attack England and {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(decide) that France should take the place of England {#blank#}4{#/blank#} their closest friend. England,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} was unhappy when the relationship between the two countries broke down. Queen Elizabeth I did not want to be left out of any decisions {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(do) with Scotland, so she divided the Scottish lords into several groups so that they would argue with each other instead of {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(attack) England. This {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(arrange) worked well until 1603 {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Queen Elizabeth died. As King James of Scotland was her only relative, he became King of Scotland and England, and everybody was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(delight) with the solution.

    China, which takes pride in four inventions in ancient times, has once again shown its ability {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (change) the world with its “new four great inventions”: high-speed railways, electronic payment, shared bicycles and online shopping.

    It is increasingly clear that China is no longer{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(copy) western ideas and is leading in many new ways. A growing number of foreign {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (company) hope to promote the development in their home country by highlighting the need for technological achievements like that of China.

    When Sandra was a child, her family was very poor, but she wanted {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (bad) to believe that her poverty was just a temporary situation, so she looked toward stories {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (escape). Admission to Loyola University {#blank#}8{#/blank#} she earned a BA in English was a turning point for her. Sandra's writing {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (shape) by her experiences since then. She doesn't just make up {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (character), but writes about real people that she has encountered.

Twenty-five years ago, most young British people wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or to take up singing. But today, things stand {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(different).

According to a recent survey, the "dream job" of young people {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(age) between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or "vlogger(视频博主)". The survey, carried out among 1, 002 people, found that over 40% of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of dream {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(career).

The change is largely due to the rapid development of information technology (IT). The Internet and social media have made it {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(easy) and more convenient to reach a global audience, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.

"From fashion to comedy, these self-made stars interact online with their fans about everyday life. "

However, what people see {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) only the bright side of being a vlogger and they ignore the fact {#blank#}8{#/blank#} only those who are successful can gain fame and fortune. Actually, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} every success there are a hundred others who never get off the starting block. This is why some young people still show {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(prefer) for traditional jobs.
