Sarah Hughes won the gold medal in women's figure skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics.A graduate of Yale University,she is writing her first book.She owes her success to her parents' support.

    “I started skating when I was 3 years old.Competing in the Olympic Games had been my dream from the beginning.When I was 12 years old,my mother was hospitalized with breast cancer.I was on the way to making my first national team.Seeing my excitement at each stage gave her strength through her illness.On days when she was too weak to walk,she would think,‘I have to make it through.I have to be there for my kids.' My mom was able to leave the hospital to come to Philadelphia from New York to watch me win the Junior Ladies title.That day I was skating for more than just the judges.My parents' support made all the difference when I performed on the skating stage.When I won the Olympic medal,I was able to share more than just my skating experience with the people who were with me all along.I was raised in a stable,supportive environment."

    I watched from a distance as the homeless man quarreled with those who did not leave money for him – the majority.

    I walked up to him and right on queue he asked me for a quarter. "I'll give you a quarter if you tell me your story." He laughed, "You'll give me a quarter for my story?" I lay the quarter in front of him and corrected myself – "Nah, here's the quarter but it would be nice to hear your story." I followed his eyes to the quarter and for a brief moment I saw a bright reflection. I sat down next to him and waited.

    "I was in the army," he said. "I was a sniper(狙击手)and was supposed to shoot down the enemy from the distance." I listened carefully to his rough voice as he went deeper into the story.  He told me how he used to hunt with his family and was really good at it. He had his own way of respecting animals by not wasting what he killed for food and not killing more than he needed. When the army came knocking on his door, he felt pride and joined up. All those years of polishing his hunting skills could now serve a larger purpose—to defend us from the bad guys. He set out to fight in Iraq.

    It wasn't long before he realized his ideals and expectations were just a shadow of the truth. "I was a sniper but I never really killed anyone innocent," he said. "One day I had to do it. They asked me to shoot this lady from the distance. I saw kids near that lady and my hands were on the trigger (扳机). Man, I was tearing up ... I couldn't do it."

    You may know all about vitamin C, but do you know why vitamin D is also important to your body? Experts from the Children's Hospital in Boston, US, have said that some teens don't get enough of this important nutrient.

    Vitamin D can help bones and muscles grow strong and healthy. If a person is short of vitamin D, he or she may have problems like rickets(佝偻病)and osteoporosis． Rickets is mainly found in children. Osteoporosis,the thinning of bone, is a common problem as people get older.

    Studies in these years have found that vitamin D may also have other uses. If someone is short of vitamin D, he may have heart problems or die from some cancers.

The easiest way to get vitamin D is from sunlight. But many people worry about getting skin cancer and skin damage from the sun. Also, even skin color has an influence. Darker skinned people get less vitamin D than lighter skinned people. Older people get less vitamin D than younger people. You can also get it from foods. Some food such as cheese and egg yolks (蛋黄) have some vitamin D． But most of vitamin D in the American diet comes from food like milk with the vitamin added.

    Now more doctors are testing for vitamin D in their patients. But some doctors worry that if people take too much vitamin D, it might be bad for their body. At the same time, skin doctors tell people to be careful with sunlight.

    Nowadays the business of fast food is developing at a rapid speed. Have you ever thought twice before deciding to eat fast food? Even if it is easy to buy and cheap, the risks outweigh(胜过) the five minutes of satisfaction that fast food brings. There are many risks when it comes to eating food that's made in just a few of seconds.

    What you eat can affect your health. People who are addicted to fast food are more likely to suffer from various life-threatening diseases. Obesity(肥胖) can come when fast food is bought often. Fast food is made from a lot of fats and high calories. If it isn't removed, then you can grow to become obese. Even a small quantity of fast food contains many calories. People are fooled by its appearance and they tend to eat more. Thus, without knowing, they consume a lot of calories. What's worse, obesity isn't the only risk. Heart disease is also a danger. The more fats, sugar and salt you eat, the weaker your heart can grow.

    Another concern for most consumers is that they can't keep track of the sources of the food supplies in fast food restaurants. They never know about the living conditions of the animals killed for meat in those restaurants, like cows, pigs, and chicken. A recent study has suggested that bacteria have been found in about 38% fast food. Even some soft drinks are now infected by food-borne illnesses that usually come from meat.

    Although fast food is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of eating, the health risks aren't worth your life, and risking your life for something that isn't good for you could cost thousands of dollars in hospital bills. It is important to eat healthily and make good choices when deciding what to put in your body. Don't be lazy and pick up fast food on your way home from work.

Should some books be banned from school libraries?

    Are there Harry Potter books in your school library? Many kids all over the world are reading J. K. Rowling's books in school. But some parents think their children shouldn't be able to find those and other books in school libraries. Should school libraries keep books that some parents don't approve of? Should they take those books off the shelves? All over the country, schools are wrestling with those questions.

    It's true that some hold their argument that some books should be banned from school libraries! "We need certain limits," said one student in Denver, Colorado. He said some books have no place in school libraries. Many people believe that books that contain violence or bad words shouldn't be in schools. Some people want the Harry Potter books removed because they contain talk about wizards and magic.

    Most parents know what's good for kids. They have a right to decide which books should or should not be in school libraries.

    Books should meet certain standards before they are put in schools. Is this a good book for kids to read? Is it full of violence? Does it contain bad words or ideas kids shouldn't learn about? If a book is not good for all kids, it should not be in a school library. Most parents don't have time to find out everything their kids read. They should be able to trust schools to do that for them.

    On the other hand, some believe that books should not be banned from school libraries! "Parents should decide what their own kids read," said Natalie Nicol, of Denver, Colorado. But other parents shouldn't make that choice for them. Many experts say that it's the parents' job, not the school's job, to check out what their kids are reading. If they don't like a book, they should not let their kids read it.

    Why should a few parents stop kids from reading stories like the Harry Potter series? Kids should be able to check out books their parents think are OK to read. Many schools let kids borrow certain books if they have a signed paper from a parent. That works fine. A parent doesn't sign the paper if he or she doesn't want the child to read the book. Other kids can read the books if they have permission.

    Some books are not OK for all kids to read. But if more adults were careful about what their own kids read, they wouldn't have to ban books from the library.

    Once, when I was a teenager my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

    This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean, the children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.

    The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. The mother was holding her husband s hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor." He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say "You got that right". The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded "please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.

    The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?" The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn't have enough money.

    How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense, so I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
