There are many great heroes in the world. For example, Gandhi, an Indian {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(nation) hero, was respected as the father of the Indian nation. He has been beloved by the Indians.

    He was born in India in 1869. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(Follow) the local custom, he got married at the age of 13. In 1888 he sailed to England, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he studied law for three years and became a lawyer. On his return to India, he was sent to South Africa to work on a law case.

    In South Africa,{#blank#}4{#/blank#}surprised him most was that the problem of racial discrimination (种族歧视) was serious. There he formed an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(organize) and started a magazine to fight for equal rights.

    Gandhi returned to India in 1915, when India was controlled by the British. Under his {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(guide), the Indians {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(devote) to fighting for an end to the British rule and independence for their country. In the political movement, many Indians,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (include) Gandhi, were put in prison. However, they struggled bravely without hesitation. The British government had to give {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and India won its independence in 1947.{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (fortunate) Gandhi was shot by an Indian who opposed his views and died on January 30th, 1948.

    Classical Chinese poetry is traditional Chinese poetry written in Classical Chinese and typified by certain traditional {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(form). Many poems come from historical periods, such as the poetry of the Tang Dynasty {#blank#}2{#/blank#}the verse of Song Dynasty. Its {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(exist) dates back to at least as early as the publication of the Classic of Poetry or Shijing. There are{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (vary) combinations of forms and genres, most of which arose at{#blank#}5{#/blank#}end of the Tang Dynasty.

    Development of Classical Chinese poetry actively continued up to the year of 1919,{#blank#}6{#/blank#}the May Fourth Movement took place, and is still popular even today. Classical Poetry{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (create) during this 2,500-year period has been developing continuously,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (produce) a great deal of diversity—classified by both major historical periods and dynastic periods.

Food from the air

    Everyone has seen plants growing, but have you ever thought {#blank#}1{#/blank#} they get their food? In the seventeenth century, a European scientist {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (call) Van Helmot asked this question. Like most people, he thought that plants must get their food from soil. However, Van Helmot decided {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (test) the theory with experiments.

    First, he dried some soil, put it into a pot and weighed it. Next, he weighed a small tree, planted it in the pot and added rain water. Then, he watered it {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (regular) with rain water.

    After five years, he removed the tree from the pot and weighed it again. He found that the tree had gained {#blank#}5{#/blank#} huge amount of weight. When he weighed the soil, however, it was almost exactly the same as it had been five years {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. So Van Helmot drew the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (conclude) that the tree grew by drinking water. Though it turned out to be wrong, he showed the importance of the use of scientific evidence to support ideas.

    We now know that plants and trees make their own food. Their leaves, when exposed {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the air and sun, are like factories {#blank#}9{#/blank#} can change the energy from the sun into chemical energy. During this process (过程), oxygen and sugar {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (produce). The oxygen is released back into the air, and the sugar is used by the plant as food.

    I went backpacking through Italy many {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (summer) ago. There I had the opportunity to taste some of the best cherries in my life. At the orchard, and old man named Leopoldo, whose face was  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(beautiful) lined, told the beautiful story of a beautiful life well lived. He offered me all kinds  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}cherries from the orchard and they were {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (amaze). And that's when I realized something: the world is inspiring. The fruit is inspiring, if you let {#blank#}8{#/blank#} be. As the sun began to set, I said goodbye to Leopoldo {#blank#}9{#/blank#}his lovely family. My mind {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(fill) with berries then, and I was thinking about being a fruit farmer on my way home.
