Not enough American students want to be engineers, mathematicians, or scientists. The US government wants to change that. The government will spend three billion dollars on the education of young Americans in science, technology, engineering, and math. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} 

Many jobs in the STEM fields will open in the coming years. The purpose of the government's investment（投资）is to increase the number of Americans who can take those jobs.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} than boys. Only 25 percent of STEM students are girls.

Camsie McAdams is at the US Education Department. She says girls simply do not feel welcomed in STEM subjects. 

Debbie Sterling is an engineer. She invented a toy for girls. The name of the toy is “Goldie Blox”. To interest girls, Sterling created the character “Goldie”. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}  Goldie tells stories, solves difficult problems and builds new worlds.

 Mia is a seven-year-old girl who likes science. In her room, she has no fashion dolls. Instead, she received a set of Goldie Blox from her grandmother. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} .

 Experts say parents should do more than just buy toys to interest their girls in STEM subjects. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} . At school, girls should take part in projects that require teamwork and creative thinking. 

      In 2008, an Indian film Slumdog Millionaire(《贫民窟的百万富翁》) won an Oscar a{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. It tells the story of a poor young man who wins the top prize on a TV game show. Now, in r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} life, there is a “slumdog millionaire” too. An Indian office worker has b{#blank#}3{#/blank#} the first person to win the＄1 million top prize on the Indian TV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

The w{#blank#}4{#/blank#}, Sushil Kumar, is 27 years old. He works as a computer operator in a government office. He earns around only $120 every month. His house is almost broken and he had a lot of loans (贷款) to be repaired. He e{#blank#}5{#/blank#} watched the TV game show at a neighbour's house, because his family is too poor to a{#blank#}6{#/blank#} a television set.

      People are i{#blank#}7{#/blank#} in how Kumar will use the prize. Kumar said that he was going to r{#blank#}8{#/blank#} his house and fulfill a few basic needs. He would also use part of the prize to study f{#blank#}9{#/blank#} the civil service（公务员）exams. “I love reading,” Kumar said in an interview after his win. “Before winning the prize, I c{#blank#}10{#/blank#} buy many books, but now, I will make a huge library.”

    Are you looking forward to going abroad? These years, thousands of Chinese middle school students go to study in foreign {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (country) such as the US, the UK and Australia.

     “Chinese children hope to go abroad {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (get) a wider view (视野) of the world,” said Li Mingshan, a Chinese writer who has {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (live) in America for many years. In a talk Li told more than 300 parents and their children that life abroad can be surely {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (hard) for young people than that in China. “They have to meet a culture shock and language problems.”

while they are studying alone in a foreign country is a big challenge (挑战).

    Zhao Baohua, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}18-year-old student began to study in a high school in Australia last October. To his surprise, he was hardly given {#blank#}8{#/blank#} homework! “So we have more free time and more space for thinking.”said Zhao. “But {#blank#}9{#/blank#} you don't know how to plan your time and money, you will not have an easy time.”

    It was a playground. Eight {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(child) were standing on the starting line to take part in a running race.

    All eight girls started running {#blank#}2{#/blank#} they heard the sound. After a minute, one of the small girls fell down. Because {#blank#}3{#/blank#}the pain(痛), she started to cry. When the other seven girls heard, they stopped running {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(quick).Then they stood for a while to see what happened.
