The Vine(藤本植物) That Ate the South

Kudzu is a fast-growing vine that covers a large area in the southern United States. It is so common that one might think it is a native plant, but it is not. Kudzu was brought to the United States from Japan in 1876. Many Americans thought it was beautiful, and they began to plant it. They didn't know it could grow up to a foot a day during the summer months. Nor did they know it would grow up and over anything in its path.

In Japan, kudzu experienced cold winters and a short growing season. But in the United States, it has a very long growing season with warm and wet southern weather. It is fine weather for the vine to grow fast.

In the 1920s, people used the vine to feed farm animals. Ten years later, the government supported to plant kudzu because it kept soil (土壤) from washing away. However, by the 1950s, the government no longer wanted people to plant the vine. Twenty years after that, the government said it was a harmful plant.

The vine grows up trees and buildings, making some beautiful shapes. However, trees die after kudzu covers them because they cannot get enough light. Scientists are looking for ways to kill the vine. They used poisons(毒药) to kill the vine. However, some of the poisons made it grow even better. Scientists also find it difficult to dig up kudzu. The plant is really tough.

Because kudzu is so hard to kill, some people are making the best of it. So they try to find different uses for the vine. They find they can use the vine to make paper and baskets and feed the goats. People also can eat it. Scientists are studying it in the hope that they can use the vine as a medicine. At the very' least, kudzu serves as an example of the unexpected results that can come from non-native plants.

Have you heard the saying "Fall down seven times, stand up eight"? It means that however difficult things get and however many mistakes you make, have the passion and energy to keep going. This is called perseverance and it can help you achieve lots of things.

Perseverance means keeping doing something over a long time, even when the going gets difficult. It's believed that you can achieve a goal if you prepare to work for it. Practicing a trick (技巧) on your bike over and over again or finishing a picture without throwing it away and starting afresh shows perseverance. Florence, 11, says, "It means never giving up, being determined and trying hard to push yourself. I go running with my mom three times a week, even when I don't feel like it, because I want to be the fastest in my class."

Studies show that feeling hopeful and working towards a goal that you really want to reach can reduce stress and make you feel happier. Achieving something you've worked hard for, and overcoming challenges along the way, can also develop your confidence and make you feel braver to try new things. Angela Duckworth is an expert in thoughts and feelings. She studies perseverance, which she calls "grit (勇气)". Duckworth believes that it doesn't matter how talented, clever or rich you are, having grit is what really helps you succeed. She explains, no matter how gifted you are, and no matter how easily you do well in your lessons, you should have perseverance.

Duckworth believes perseverance is something anyone can learn, and the best way to do this is to have a growth mind. This means believing that your brain can grow, and that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. So instead of thinking, "I can't do this", try thinking, "I can't do this... yet". As the book The Big Life Journal says, "People with a growth idea know they can get better by working hard. They keep trying even when things are difficult."

In Germany, if children want to ride bikes on the road, they have to pass a test. The test is quite like our driving test.

First, the students have thirty classes about how to ride bikes safely on the road. Each student has a book. The book tells them how to keep safe on the road, how to keep others safe and what to do if they get hurt. Here is a picture from the book. It tells the students the right way to turn left.

After the classes, the students will have two written tests. Then, they will do some riding practice at school. Some policemen will come to give them some help.

At last, the students will have a test on the road. If they can pass the test, they can get a bike license (执照). Then they can ride on the road.

We all know Germans are very careful. We can see this from their riding test for the students. The students learn to ride, and at the same time, they learn the spirit (精神) of the country.

 That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at I am in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines(台词). I was having trouble dealing with my part- time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.

 As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers(强盗). Very few people were still out except a few sad- looking homeless people under blankets(毯子).

 About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

 Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.

 Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside," Alisa Camacho?"I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red- haired man with a cheerful look in his eyes." Is this what you' re looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.

 It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life.

①A tidy desk helps you find things easily and is good for your study. But how can you keep your desk tidy?

②First, only put things you need on your desk. For old books, you can put them in the bookcase. Get a box for small things you don't need every day, and you can put your pens and pencils in a pencil box.

③Second, don't put food or drinks on your desk, because they can make your desk dirty. Go to the kitchen when you want to eat.

④Third, put important(重要的)things next to you. Then it is easy for you to get them.

⑤Fourth, clean your desk every day. If you do it every day, you can have a new day with a tidy room the next morning.

The year 2024 celebrates the Chinese Year of the Dragon. It is respected as a lucky year, full {#blank#}1{#/blank#} hope for all. Chinese people {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the dragon, and even see {#blank#}3{#/blank#} as the descendants (后代) of the dragon. In Chinese {#blank#}4{#/blank#} , the dragon is a symbol of power and good luck. People believe it controls the water and {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a good harvest (收获). And people who are born in the dragon year are {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to be confident and brave. The length of dragons can be 50 to 70 {#blank#}7{#/blank#} because people believe that the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the dragon is, the more luck it will bring. The dragon is not just {#blank#}9{#/blank#} animal in the Chinese zodiac (生肖), it's also a powerful symbol that is rooted (根植) {#blank#}10{#/blank#} in Chinese history and customs.
