You must have remembered the story from your childhood: an old man was worried about his sons because they always quarreled with each other. So one day he asked them to break a bundle(捆) of chopsticks tied together. Clearly, none of them could. But when the bundle was untied, they were able to break each chopstick easily. Why? This is because of the power of unity(团结).

    Dr. John Maxwell, in his book Success Journey says that every success is not something you can achieve alone. Think about it —if at the end of all the achievements, you find yourself alone, will you call it success in a real sense? It is known to all of us that success always belongs to unity. But we often seem to forget it when it comes to individual(个人的) success. Most of us consider our success as a personal thing.

    Your dream and your success do not belong to you alone. Even though you work hard towards your dream, there are people who are working behind you to make sure that you are able to give yourself a hundred percent energy.

    Do you think that it is possible without unity? Don't you feel that these people are doing their best so that you can be successful? And so, unity plays an important role, even if you are talking about your personal success. Just like those chopsticks, they can't be broken only when they are tied together.

    So, it is your responsibility to keep unity if you really want to be successful in your trip. Only if you always treat things and people seriously, you will succeed because all the things and people around you have connections in some way.

Plastic straws (吸管) are a modern invention, although people have been using different types of things for drinking water for centuries. By the 1960s, plastic straws have become common. It is said that 500 million straws are used just in the United States each day.

So what's the problem?  The problem is that plastics, including plastic straws that are usually thrown away after one use, end up in the the world's oceans. As many as 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world's beaches and oceans.

There are many choices for people who need or want a straw. Paper straws are becoming popular. Straws made from a new kind of plastic, which is biodegradable (可生物降解的) and made from plants, are also a good choice. Companies are also marketing reusable straws made of glass or metal. People can carry these straws with them to use when they go to a restaurant. However, paper straws are about 6 cents each, and reusable glass straws are about 50 to 60 cents each, while a regular plastic straw only costs about a cent. That adds up for restaurants and food sellers that offer straws.

Because the use of plastic straws is getting a lot of attention these days, many businesses have decided not to use them. Starbucks has said that it will stop using plastic straws. McDonald's announced that it will start banning (禁止) straws at its restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Hotel chains such as Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt plan to stop using them. Even the whole cities, like Seattle, are banning the use of plastic straws. California now has a law in place that customers will only be given a straw if they ask for one.

The next time you're buying something to drink, think about your straw choices. Reuse, reduce, and recycle.

Parents often find children watch cartoons for at least three to four hours a day. Studies show that kids start watching cartoons on TV at an early age of six months, and by the time they reach the age of two or three, they become fans of cartoons and they would like to spend much time on them. Is it good for kids to watch cartoons?

Parents often see this as a problem because most of the kids are too crazy about watching cartoons. Parents think if kids spend too much time on cartoons, they won't do well at school.

Some people think it's good to watch cartoons. They help the working parents the most because parents can do a lot of work when their kids watch cartoons on TV.

When children watch educational cartoons, they get to learn things. Cartoons also help to improve children's language skills. Educational cartoons help children try different languages. Kids can learn English well with the help of those cartoon programs. At the same time, some kids can learn about the friendship and teamwork from the cartoons. It is good for them to get on well with their friends and classmates.

So sometimes it is meaningless to stop kids from watching cartoons, but parents should make sure that their kids are watching the right things.

It is true that people with better education* are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don't. It seems that the purpose* of education is to make people get jobs. But not all the people agree with this idea.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education in order to make more money in the future. This was probably one of the earliest purposes of education. In fact, if education is just a way to make a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. They can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. And people don't have to learn maths and languages so carefully. So it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

So what is education for? Education is well-rounded and it should improve a man in many ways. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative* thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all, take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the only reason.

①A lot of students like playing sports every day, but if sports aren't going to be your future, why should you play them? Why would you train every day even though you feel very tired? Wouldn't it be better to forget sports and only pay attention to your lessons?

②In fact, there are lots of reasons to play sports. First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good condition. When you take exercise, your body makes endorphins(内啡肽) which give you more energy and let you feel happier.

③Sports are important for everyone, and they are especially important for young people. They teach young people about winning and losing. Also, they teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. They teach young people to respect their coaches, teammates and players from the other team. Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports, he or she may have fewer problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.

④Another advantage of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important.

⑤Maybe you' re not going to become a sports professional(专家), but that doesn't matter. Sports will help you become a better and happier person.

①Many great scientists are left-handed, like Isaac Newton. So, some people say left-handed people are cleverer than the right-handed. Is this true?

②Scientifĩc studies show that left-handed people have no higher IQ than the right-handed. They are just good at different things.

③Left-handed and right-handed people usually use different sides of their brains(大脑). The right-handed use the left side more often, but the left-handed use both sides more evenly(均衡地).

④The left-handed are good at thinking creatively(创造性地) in anything from art to science. But it's not all good news for them. They may easily forget names and places.
