Archimedes and the golden crown

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown maker to make him a golden crown. At first, he was very1 with it.

"It's a nice crown, isn't it?" he asked his men. Later, however, he began to doubt2it was a real golden crown. "Is it made completely of gold?" he wondered. He sent it to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth.

"This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?" thought Archimedes.

Archimedes was still thinking about this problem3he filled his bath with water. When he got into the bath, some water ran over.  

"That's it!" shouted Archimedes. "I know4 to solve the king's problem!"

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he5the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight.

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled6pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into7pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl.

"Look at this," said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown8completely of gold displaces9water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it is not10made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison.

Dong Lina grew up in a farmer's family in Dalian, Liaoning. She couldn't see clearly when she was a baby. She couldn't see anything when she was only ten years old.

Dong went to a special school for people who can't see or hear. After that, she learned tuina and then found a job. One of her teachers said tuina was her only way out. But Dong didn't think so.

In 2006, 22-year-old Dong took part in a radio host (主持人) programme. Soon she fell in love with broadcasting. It was really difficult for her to learn that, but Dong tried her best and practiced every day. A year later, she got good grades (等级) in the Mandarin Proficiency Test. She could work as a radio host!

In 2015, Dong became the host of a radio programme. And in the same year, she went to learn radio and TV broadcasting in Communication University of China. She also worked as a part-time teacher in her free time.

Last July, Dong finished her study in the university.

She's the first visually impaired master (硕士) of broadcasting in China. She says, "We should always have dreams and work hard for them."

The Chongyang Festival is an important and famous Chinese festival. It is celebrated on the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(nine)day of September in the lunar (阴历) month. In 2021, it falls {#blank#}2{#/blank#}October 14th.

The festival has a history of more than 1,700 years. The number nine is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}highest odd number(奇数). In China, it is believed that two nines meeting together stand for a long life. So it is a special holiday for Chinese people {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(show) love and respect for their elders. People hold many kinds of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (activity) in honor of old people, wishing them a long life and good health.

The festival comes during the golden days of autumn. On the day, people {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(tradition) drink chrysanthemum(菊花) wine, eat special cakes {#blank#}7{#/blank#}climb mountains. They also carry a kind of plant called dogwood. People in ancient times {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(consider) that the plant could drive the illness away in winter and stop them from {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(catch) by evil spirits.

Bonnie shook with cold. It was almost 1 . Bonnie needed a warm and safe place to spend the following months. 

Finding a new place to sleep was 2 than he thought. No place was right. Finally, Bonnie found a cave in a hill. It was 3 except for one thing. The opening was small because it was covered with a lot of soil and roots. "I'll dig out some soil and make the entrance bigger," he thought. Bonnie dug and dug. It took a lot of hard work and effort. 

The roots were too strong to be cleared away.4 he heard a loud sound, "rack". Bonnie turned quickly and saw a small squirrel. He smiled at Bonnie, "It seems that you need help." Bonnie sighed, "I have been trying to 5 this cave, but it's difficult." 

"I'm Jack, and I can help," said the squirrel. "But you are too small," said Bonnie. Bonnie sat down as Jack ran away. A few minutes later, he came back. 

"What you need is a book," said Jack. "Reading can help you. Books are full of knowledge. He handed Bonnie a thick book." 

Bonnie paid careful attention to the story about a lion and a mouse. 

The lion thought the mouse was too 6 to help him. One day the lion got caught in a 7 . The mouse chewed( 咬 ) the net's ropes and helped the lion run away. "The lion learned an important lesson," said Bonnie. "I think I did, too." The mouse had sharp teeth and so did Jack. Jack could help. The new friends made a fine team. Jack chewed through the thick roots and Bonnie dug out the soil. Finally, Bonnie could 8 the opening easily. 

"Are you 9 with your new home?" asked Jack. "Sure, I am!" said Bonnie, "I won't be homeless on such a cold day any more! And I have 10 something, too. Never look down upon others who appear to be weaker than you."
