Do you know Machu Picchu in Peru? Maybe you never hear about it and think there is nothing great with it. But it is famous all over the world, just like the Great Wall in our country.

Machu Picchu is over 600 years old, but people found it very late, in 

1911. That's why people also call it"The Lost City of the Incas". Machu Piechu lies on the highland of a mountain, at over 2,400 metres above sea level. It is about 5 km² and has about 200 different old but great buildings. There are three areas(地区) in Machu Picchu and every one of them has different uses. The slopes(斜坡)of the mountain work as the farming areas. The lower (更低的) areas are the buildings for people to live in. The top of the mountain is for religious activities(宗教活动). From there, you can enjoy all of Machu Picchu.

▲Why did people build the city on the mountain? How did they build these fantastic buildings? Who lived there before? It may take a long time to find them out.

Riding a bike on the street, you might hear some people {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (speak) Chinese aloud. Turning to the right, you see a Sichuan-Style restaurant. After walking into a store {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (sell). But you're not in China—you're in Britain. Chinese products have almost {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (reach) all parts of the world.

Chinese food has been enjoyed in Western countries for {#blank#}4{#/blank#} long time. To meet local {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (people) tastes, Chinese restaurants have made some changes to the dishes. Chinese like to eat meat with the bone (骨头), but people here don't. So Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat {#blank#}6{#/blank#} bones.

"Some Chinese brands are also becoming more popular. In many cities in Europe, stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers."

In the past, most western people thought Chinese {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (product) were cheap and unreliable (不可靠的). But things have changed {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (great). "Made in China" has become cool and more people believe in Chinese brands. For example, Huawei smartphones sold {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (good) than Apple for the first time in June and July. "They are beautiful and offer some functions {#blank#}10{#/blank#} American phones don't have." CNN once said.

① In the summer of 2023, it was quite hot in Beijing, so I planned to stay for several days in the countryside. " Why not go to an island? It's my dream trip, " one of my friends said. Finally, we decided to go to an island county (县)—— Shengsi.

② Shengsi County is in the northernmost part of the Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang Province. There are more than 400 islands in the county. Of these islands, only 16 are inhabited (有人居住的). And the most famous islands for visitors are Sijiao, Gouqi, Shengshan and the Flower and Bird.

③ First, three of us drove to Shenjiawan Wharf in Shanghai. After parking the car, we took a ferry (轮渡) to Gouqi Island. It took us about two and a half hours to arrive in the island.  ▲ — the endless blue sea, the forests, the beautiful stone houses . . . We really had a great time enjoying the beauty of nature and delicious seafood.

④ The next day we went to Shengshan Island. There is a beautiful uninhabited village in the island's northeast. In the 1970s, more than1,000 people lived there and most of them were fishermen. Later they all left and moved to big cities. But we can see many beautiful photos of the village on the Internet, especially the photos of creeping plant mountain tigers (爬山虎). We really liked the green village.

⑤ A five- day trip in Shengsi was really enjoyable. When we were about to leave, I asked a fisherman, "When is the best time to visit Shengsi County?" "Each day if you like," he answered.

The winter solstice, or dongzhi, is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms(节气) in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually happens {#blank#}1{#/blank#} December 21st, 22nd or 23rd. People in different parts of China have different customs on this day. 

Eating dumplings, or jiaozi, is a common custom for many Chinese on the winter solstice, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} those living in the north. Why do we eat dumplings on this day?

It is said {#blank#}3{#/blank#} this custom is to remember Zhang Zhongjing, a famous doctor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} person to make them. People called this food "Jiao'er" for its shape at that time. During the Three Kingdoms Period(三国时期), dumplings became a popular food. In the Song Dynasty, dumplings{#blank#}5{#/blank#} to Mongolia(蒙古). Influenced by Mongolians, dumplings had {#blank#}6{#/blank#} fillings(馅) . Then Mongolians spread {#blank#}7{#/blank#} to all over the world. 

From the Qing Dynasty, dumplings became a must on Chinese New Year's Eve. Family members gather together to make dumplings and eat them. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}eating dumplings, they probably care more about the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}atmosphere(氛围) of the festival. 

No words can {#blank#}10{#/blank#} Chinese people's love for dumplings . The food has already become a symbol of home and warmth. 

Many Australians celebrate New Year's Eve on December 31st each year. It is the day before New Year's Day, January 1st.

New Year's Eve is not a public holiday in Australia but schools are {#blank#}1{#/blank#} （close） because it is a holiday period（时期）. Some offices may also be closed,{#blank#}2{#/blank#} a lot of people don't work during this time.

Many Australian cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne, have different kinds of New Year's Eve activities. In Sydney, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（million） of people go to a large firework show. Everybody will have fun while {#blank#}4{#/blank#} （watch） the beautiful fireworks.

The firework show means the end of the old year and the {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（begin） of the new year. It is a way {#blank#}6{#/blank#} saying goodbye to the past and saying hello to the future.

For many people, New Year's Day is a time to take {#blank#}7{#/blank#} break after New Year's Eve parties the evening before. Others use the day to travel home {#blank#}8{#/blank#} （spend） time with family members.

In Australia, New Year's celebrations{#blank#}9{#/blank#}（usual） last for the first 
six days of the new year, so Australia is a popular tourist country among  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}（visit） during that period.
