China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way people shop at markets.

    People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilogram of beef at a time.

    However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount (数量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.

    The difference could be due to the different weather.

    Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

Artist Jasmine Cho paints the picture of famous Asian Americans. But she does not use paper to create her art. She uses cookies. Cho said the sweet treats are meaningful because they can help people know more about Asian Americans. The 39-year-old artist believes her art comes from a feeling of not belonging when she was young.

Cho has got fans over the last several years as she always makes cookie faces in detail. Famous actors like Awkwafina and Daniel Dae have praised her cookie designs. The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Cho has lived since 2009,even honored (给……荣誉) her with a "Jasmine Cho Day" in 2020.

In 2016, Cho made a video in which she was making cookies for her online bakery (面包店). The cookies were exactly like her friends. So the cookies received attention on social media at once. Soon, others wanted her cookies, too.

A few months later, Cho held her first show. She made cookies of Asian American Pittsburgh natives, like Leah Lizarondo, the founder of 412 Food Rescue. Lizarondo remembers how surprised she was to find that Cho bad made her into a cookie face. "I shared it as widely as I could because I was so proud to be among the people she did cookie portraits (肖像) of," Lizarondo said by email.

In 2021, Cho wrote a children's book Role Models Who Look Lite Me. In the following years, she has given over 20 speeches in different countries. For her, the biggest exciting thing is when young Asian Americans, particularly females, feel encouraged. "They tell me things like, ‘I learned more in your 15-minute talk than I have in my whole class that's about Asian American history,' or something like that," Cho said.

 As a young man, Alan was a skilled artist and known for his paintings. He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his older son died of a sudden illness. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6- year- old son. The pain was more than Alan could stand, and he turned to alcohol (酒). Finally, Alan became an alcoholic(酒鬼).

 Day by day, Alan began to lose everything he had— his home, his job, his art, everything. In the end, Alan died alone in a hotel.

 When I heard of Alan's death,I thought," What a complete failure!"

 As time went by, Alan's son Ernie grew up. He is one of the kindest and most caring men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and care had to come from somewhere.

I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to excuse an alcoholic. One   day I asked him,"I'm really puzzled by something,"I said."I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do to make you become such a good person?"

 Ernie sat quietly for a while. Then he said," From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Alan came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,‘I love you, son.'"

 Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Alan as a failure. He had not left any material possessions(物质财富) behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and he left behind one of the finest men I have ever known.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day is on the first Sunday in September. It is a day to celebrate grandparents. It is celebrated in a few countries around the world. It is always important to respect your elders. 

The night before Grandparents Day, Nancy and May couldn't go to sleep because they wanted to do something for their grandparents. "Now, " said Nancy, "It's time for us to do something for our grand- parents. Let's think about a surprise for them. " The children thought and thought. 

At last May got a good idea. She said, "Oh, I'll tell you. " And she began to talk very fast. "Oh, oh!" said Nancy. "That is just the thing!" The next morning the children got up early. They were very busy making breakfast. After some time, they called their grandparents. "Happy Grandparents Day!" they said. "Breakfast is ready. ""Oh, what a surprise!" their grandparents cried. 

Your grandparents have learned a lot. What have they taught you? Did your grandpa teach you how to fish? Did your grandma show you how to bake cookies? If you think about how much your parents do for you, just remember that your grandparents helped them that much, too! How can you return the favor? Do they need your help now? Maybe they would just like to see you or hear you on the phone!

I used to spend my free time doing boring things. For example, I enjoyed playing with my phone, using the Internet and watching TV. Even worse, I played and played u{#blank#}1{#/blank#} it was very late at night. At last, I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(意识到) it was not good for me. So this summer, I decided to go through a whole holiday without my phone or the Internet. And I went to my grandparents' home in the countryside.

 As soon as I arrived at my grandparents' home, I felt great. How a{#blank#}3{#/blank#}! How lovely and peaceful the village was! The {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(小溪) was clean. All kinds of plants were more beautiful than you could imagine. The following three days, I did {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (无论什么) I could to help my grandparents. I helped them harvest (收割) corns, feed the chickens and milk the cow. On the{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(第四) day,I made some new friends there. We went fishing, and rode bicycles everywhere. Sometimes when I woke up at {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (午夜),I could even hear frogs. We really enjoyed o{#blank#}8{#/blank#} and had fun running after each other every day. T{#blank#}9{#/blank#} there was no phone or the Internet in the countryside, I felt so happy.

 Happy time is always short, especially for children. Soon my holiday was o{#blank#}10{#/blank#}. I had to leave the village and go back to the city. I really didn't feel like leaving. I believe the memory will stay in my mind for a long time.

There was a forest near my home. Many birds lived there and often showed their voices. And their voices {#blank#}1{#/blank#} beautiful. So I{#blank#}2{#/blank#} carefully. But then, many tourists came here and the forest was full of noise. The birds flew away, and I couldn't {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the voices of them any more.
