What will humans look like in the future? It sounds like a cool question, but the answer may not be that fun. 

A team from an American company, built a 3D model of what a human might look like in the year 3000. Her name is Mindy. She looks a little scary. The company said the model showed how technology（科技）will change human bodies in less than 800 years. 

For example, Mindy's hands look like she is always holding a mobile phone. That's called"text claw（爪）", according to the team. Mindy also has a much wider neck. It's called"tech neck". It's from looking down at the phone for too long. Muscles（肌肉）in our necks need to be stronger to support（支撑）our heads. 

Mindy also has another eyelid（眼皮）. It can protect the eyes from the blue light of the screens. Her skull（头骨）is thicker. It protects the brain from the radiation（辐射）of computers and phones. Technology is so helpful that humans think less. That's why humans may also have smaller brains in the future.

AI could make it less necessary to learn a foreign language. That's good news for travelers, but bad news for soulful connection. Travel has long been one of the reasons for study unless people start to feel AI tools offer a good enough service. 

Some are worried that apps are turning language learning into a weakening need. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a not so fluent (流畅的) speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a great sense of achievement in the end. Who would show off taking a plane to the top of Mount Everest?

As AI translation becomes a more popular labor-saving tool, people will divide into two groups, just as the above. There will be those who want to challenge their minds, put themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new ways. This group will take on language learning, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and confusion, as they might say with extreme sports (极限运动): "Good for you, if that's your thing, but a bit painful for my taste."

However, a focus on the learner alone misses the basically social nature of language. It is a bit like discussing the advantages of close relationship to heart health but turning a blind eye to the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in simple German, you are making direct communication with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put stress on an argument, that connection is till deeper.

Bayika Kalidibek is 72 years old and he lives in Xinjiang. In 1972, he took over his father's position and worked as a border patrolman (护边员).

Being a border patrolman is hard. The border area has high mountains and difficult roads. Bayika got hurt (受伤) many times during patrols. He faced many problems, but he never gave up. He said, "Protecting the border is a job for all of us, not just the country's."

In 2004, his son Laqini started to work as a border patrolman. Unluckily, he gave up his life when he saved (拯救) a boy from a cold river in 

2021. He was only 41 at that time. "I'm really sad, but I'm proud (自豪的) of him," Bayika said. "Our family has protected the border for more than 70 years. We will pass down our family's tradition from one generation (一代人) to the next."
