The Ling family did not think they were going home with a pet that day. Annie wanted to visit the animal shelter(避难所). She wanted to see the cats and dogs. She had wanted a pet for years. Her parents were waiting for the girls to be old enough. Annie was seven. Her sister Lily was only three. Lily was still learning how to act around animals. She had a lot of energy!

Annie and Lily were excited to see the animals. A shelter volunteer gave the Ling family a tour. The volunteer talked about why animals came to the shelter. Some were found by the road. Others were dropped off by families who could not care for them.

Finally, the Ling family got to see the animals: There was a cat section and a dog section. They were all so cute! Some of the animals looked scared. This made Annie sad. The volunteer explained that animals need time to get used to a new place. She assured(向......保证) Annie that all the people caring for these animals were kind.

The Ling family walked through the dog section. They started talking. A dog just felt like the right choice. Annie's mom could not take her eyes of fan older black dog with kind eyes. Annie's dad was interested in a large, energetic dog. Annie had found her own favorite. He was a young puppy. He was brown with spots. He had been found near the railway with six other puppies(小狗). Annie could not take her eyes off this dog. She thought he had the cutest face in the world.

Annie pleaded(恳求) with her parents. They did not want to make a quick decision. But they could see in Annie's eyes that she had found her companion(伴侣). The volunteer talked about what a good breed the dog was and that he would be kind with children. That was what the family needed to hear. They decided to take the little puppy home.

Why do you open a school? If you ask Nadia Lopez this question, she would simply answer: to close a prison. Lopez is the founder of Mott Hall Bridges Academy, a public school in Brooklyn. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

To set up the school, Lopez faced many challenges. The greatest challenge was to get in touch with children without hope. At first, Lopez only had 45 kids. She once asked some girls, "{#blank#}2{#/blank#}" The answer was, "I don't know if I'm going to live that long." or "I have a lifelong goal of working in a fast-food restaurant nearby." These students had no idea that there were great chances outsider their neighborhood.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} And they have tried their best to keep their students active an hopeful. "We call our students students 'scholars（学者）' because they are lifelong learners. I chose the colors purple and black to remind students that they are excellent. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They can be future engineers, scientists and even leaders who can and will take over this world," Lopez said.

A popular New York blogger heard about the school and wrote a post about it, telling people how the children struggled（挣扎）, and why people must make education the most important thing. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} About 1.4 million dollars were raised for the school and its students got to take field trips to colleges and universities.

"Up to now, we have had three graduating classes（毕业班）. They have nearly 200 children," said Lopez.
 

Aron Ralston is an American man who is interested in mountain climbing. As a mountain climber, Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah.

On that day, Aron's arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock that fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Because he could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. 59.但当他的水喝光之后，他知道他必须做点什么来挽救自己的生命。 He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knife to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the mountain to find help.

After losing his arm, he wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place.This means being in a difficult situation that you cannot seem to get out of. 60.In this book, Aron tells of the importance of making good decisions, and of being in control of one's life. His love for mountain climbing is so great that he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience.

Do we have the same spirit as Aron? Let's think about it before we find ourselves "between a rock and a hard place", and before we have to make a decision that could mean life or death.

I felt coming steps. She was coming to teach all things to me, and to love me. 

I still remember the morning my teacher came, she led me into her room and gave me a doll (玩具娃娃). When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word "d-o-l-l". I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate (模仿) it. When I succeeded in making the letters correctly, I was so excited and proud. I did not know I was spelling, even didn't understand everything has a name. 

 Once, as I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan put my old doll onto my leg, spelled"d-o-l-l" and tried to make me understand they were both dolls. Another time, she tried to tell me that"m-u-g" is mug and that"w-a-t-e-r" is water, but I still mixed them up. Hopelessly, she had to teach me from the beginning.  ▲ , so I threw the new doll upon the floor. 

I was quite happy when I felt the pieces of the broken doll at my feet. I was neither sad nor regretful. In my still, dark world, there was no warmth or love. I felt my teacher sweep the pieces aside, and it seemed that my trouble moved away. 

Later, we walked down the path to a well house. Someone was drawing water(抽水) and she placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream flowed over one hand, she spelled the word"w-a-t-e-r" into the other, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still and paid my whole attention on her fingers. Suddenly I knew "w-a-t-e-r" meant the wonderful thing flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, and set it free!

I left the well house and wanted to learn more about the world. As we returned to the house, I remembered the doll I had broken. I picked up the pieces and tried to put them together. Then I cried, for I realised what I had done, and for the first time I felt sad and regretful. 

I learned many new words that day. I do not remember what they all were, but I do know that mother, father, sister and teacher were among them. It would have been difficult to find a happier child than I was. While lying in my bed at the end of that day, I hoped for a new day to come for the first time.

As a funny student, Brian loved watching comedies best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day. When he1 the talent show to be held at this school, Brian decided to take part in it. 

He had never acted 2 before, so he was very excited. But some students laughed at him. "You are not funny but3 , "Ken, one of his classmates, said. "No one will like what you do. "another boy also said to him 4 .

Brian couldn't5 why they were so unkind to him. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. But he remembered6 his friends liked his jokes, and also his teachers said he was very funny. So he decided to prepare for the7 .

Brian did a great8 at the talent show. Everyone loved his performance, and he won the first prize! His teachers and friends were9 of him and said he would be successful in the future. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny. Brian didn't understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had10 to do with him. He11 continued to work towards his dream. 

As the years went on, Brian met more people like Ken. Luckily, most people12 him and some helped him to become even13 . He got a lot of chances to perform in movies. He was even invited to appear on television. 

Now Brian is a famous comedy actor! He is doing what he loves best. He 14 feels worried like those unkind people, and he laughs all day long!

Remember the bottom line is that you can't let the behavior of others bring your joy. Focus on being the best and happiest that you can be-that's 15 your energy should go. 

One day, I went to the store to pick up the next week's food. I had something important to do so I had little time and Ihad to put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month. 

When we arrived there, I gave my son a dollar and asked him to give it to a poor man at the door of the store. We  went  in  and  soon  filled  our  cart(购物车)  with  food. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines(自主结账收款机). I hated using them. I preferred to chat with the friendly cashiers(收银员), but there were too many people waiting there. As I stopped and waited, though, I heard  a  man  at  the  machine  next  to  mine  saying  something  angrily. Every time he put his old, wrinkled(起皱褶的) twenty-dollar bill into the machine, it spit out  （吐出）the bill. I quickly took a newer twenty-dollar bill out of my wallet and gave it to him. He thanked me with a warm smile and paid for his goods. I told him to keep his money but he insisted(坚持) that I should take his old, wrinkled twenty-dollar bill. I agreed, put it in my coat pocket, and wished him a Merry Christmas. 

After checking out, I remembered the saying, "Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you. " I reached into my pocket, smiled, and went outside. Then I gave that wrinkled twenty-dollar bill to another poor person and walked to my car happily. 

In my opinion, we should change the world with our love. It is easier than it looks, too. Just start with the person nearest you.
