If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Nowadays, more and more young people in China volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their plans.

I'm going to help the old people at the Old People's Home. I think they are lonely and hope someone to talk with and share stories. Also, they need to be taken good care of. I will help them do some washing and reading.

 This summer,I'm going to work for Special Help Program as a volunteer. I will visit a disability(残疾) center in my city. I plan to prepare some books and CDs for them. To cheer them up,I decide to play some games and share stories with them.

I'm going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I' ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day,I'm going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I love children and I want to be a teacher, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. A serious earthquake can be a terrible  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(经历), and it is easy to forget safety measures (措施) in disorder. Please be  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(镇静的) because most are so weak that they can't be felt. But a few big ones  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(使受伤) people. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in an earthquake.

If you are indoors during an earthquake,  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(躲;躲藏) under a table or a desk only if it is very strong. Stay away from  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(窗户) and anything that may fall on you.

If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, buildings and streetlights. These  {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (或许;可能) fall on you.

If you are inside a shop, don't try to run outside or rush for exits. Everyone will be doing that and you'll find it hard to get out. Don't get into a  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(电梯) during an earthquake, because it is much safer to stay where you are. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(盖;盖上) your head with your arms around it and curl(蜷缩) into a ball, and wait for the shaking to stop.

If you are at home and you smell gas (煤气), be brave and get out of the building  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(立刻;当即). A gas line(管道) in your house may be {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(破碎的). This can be harmful and very dangerous.

 Do you like science? If you do, you should meet Ms. Frizzle, the science teacher from The Magic(神奇的) School Bus book series(系列)! Ms. Frizzle has a magic school bus. This bus can become small and go into plants and people's body. It can also travel into space or turn into a submarine to go under the sea.

 When Ms. Frizzle drives the Magic School Bus fast, something special(特别的) is going to happen. She likes to take students on great study trips on the bus. Students can learn about the earth, the sea, the water and everything by seeing and doing! Ms. Frizzle's favourite saying is," The best way to know is to do." Her classes are always wild(狂野的), but also a lot of fun.

If you've ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think all they do is sleep. But now scientists have discovered that when elephant seals are in the ocean, they hardly sleep at all. They just sleep for about two hours a day. 

Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface(水面), predators like sharks and orca s are a danger. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(潜水) deep underwater, looking for food. Usually, they will dive for about 30 minutes, then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again. 

Scientists have wondered how elephant seals can sleep while they're at sea, since they are almost diving all the time. Animals like dolphins and sea lions have a special way. One half of their brain can sleep, while the other stays awake. But elephant seals are like humans- both halves of the brain need to go to sleep at the same time. So how do they sleep? 

To find out, a scientist named Jessica Kendall- Bar did a research. She created a special cap that could record the elephant seals' brain activity. The cap also collected information on the elephant seals' heart rates, how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were. Dr. Kendall- 

Bar and her team put the caps on thirteen young female elephant seals. 

The scientists learned that elephant seals steep in short times while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. They wake up in time to go up for more air. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they're in the ocean. That means that the rest they get once they return to land is very important, which helps them have energy again. Back on land they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day 

The researchers hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they're on land. 

Do you like penguins, especially the little furry ones? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (recent), a giant king penguin chick(雏鸟)named Pesto has won hearts all over the world. He's a big hit on social media and the star animal in Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium(水族馆). It is also the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (one)penguin in this aquarium that is famous worldwide. 

At just nine months old, Pesto weighs an amazing 49 pounds. That makes him {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (heavy)than any other penguin chicks in the aquarium for the past 30 years. And he weighs as much as the weight of both his parents!

As Pesto {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (grow)bigger and bigger, more and more people know about him. According to a statement from the aquarium, more than 1. 9 billion people worldwide have viewed his cute {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (video)on social media. 

But is there any worry {#blank#}6{#/blank#}his extremely large size?" Not at all, "says Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium education supervisor Jacinta Early. 

"He's going to start to lose his cute baby feathers. It might take him one to two months {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (get)rid of it completely. Then he'll be nice and shiny. "
