Singapore is a city of different cultures. Walking through the streets of Singapore, you can{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (听到)different languages spoken, such as English, Chinese and Malay. People from different cultures live and work peacefully with each other and share their traditions.

In Singapore, cultural differences are shown in building styles, shops and in many other ways. Take food as an {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (例子), each culture has its own place to sell their traditional food, but there are also the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (著名的) hawker markets. Different foods are sold in these {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (繁忙的) markets.

And these are very {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (受欢迎的) with Singapore citizens and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (游客) from around the world. The food is good and very{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (便宜的).

Singapore is also an interesting city. Large numbers of people, ideas, etc, are mixed together {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (在……下面)the same sky. English is used for business, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (虽然)the official language here is Malay. Now, however, there is a strong Chinese business community and also a growing Indian business community. Singapore welcomes talented people from around the world and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (希望)they will live there all their lives.

Have you ever been at a store and then suddenly noticed some candies? You weren't {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(愿意的) to buy the candies before, but you decided to get them anyway. As a{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(结果), you {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(可能) {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(后悔) your {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(快速的) buying. This is called an impulse purchase(冲动购买). You may not {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(意识到) that it happens millions of times per day but it is {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(相当) common. Stores {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(经常) set up like this so that {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(人们) will be encouraged to pick and buy things on impulse every time they walk in the door. It is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(真正地) a useful way for stores to increase sales.

An impulse purchase is the act of {#blank#}11{#/blank#}(支付) for some {#blank#}12{#/blank#}(产品) you don't originally(起初) {#blank#}13{#/blank#}(打算) to get before going to the store. Did you ever wonder why candies are always {#blank#}14{#/blank#}(提供) in the lower {#blank#}15{#/blank#}(地方) on shelves? {#blank#}16{#/blank#}(一旦) kids are tall enough to see the candy down there, they are likely to beg their {#blank#}17{#/blank#}(父母) to buy it on impulse. What about a fridge full of cold drinks as soon as you walk in a convenience store on a hot day? This is also a trick with the{#blank#}18{#/blank#}(目的) of bringing about impulse purchasing. Signs, {#blank#}19{#/blank#}(图片) and packages are also {#blank#}20{#/blank#}(完美的) things to encourage impulse buying. If you see your favorite anime(动漫) character on something, you will have one more {#blank#}21{#/blank#}(理由) to buy it instead of {#blank#}22{#/blank#}(拒绝) it. This is another way to lead people to {#blank#}23{#/blank#}(准备) for impulse purchases.

The next time you enter a store, {#blank#}24{#/blank#}(记得) to look around and see how many things there are promoting(促进) impulse buying, and you will be shocked. Even so, it's  {#blank#}25{#/blank#}(可能的) for you to still end up buying something you don't want. It is difficult to change.

When thinking of the Arctic（北冰洋 ）, some people may imagine an icy land of white snow.  And other people may imagine it as the last really clean place left on Earth.  In fact, we have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish, and now, CNN says, "It's the Arctic's turn. "

German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters.  Sadly, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter（升）of snow.  That may cause terrible air pollution. 

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, "It's clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off plastic objects and are moved by the wind.  They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. "

Are they bad for us? We do know that our bodies cannot take in "large" pieces of microplastics.  However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk. 

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world.  Research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, damaging ecosystems along the way.  When we wash clothes with plastic fibers, they start in our wastewater.  The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to sea.  They are eaten by sea animals there. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well. 

An Interview with Andy Griffiths

Andy Griffiths is well known as a writer of children's books. Here are some interesting things you might not know about him.

What do you like to do after a long day of writing?

I go for long runs and bike rides beside the beach. An hour of exercise after a long day of writing gives me energy. Then I'm ready to write some more.

Do you write using a computer or by hand?

At first write the stories by hand, and then transfer (转录) them onto computer. I like to write by hand when travel. I find it very easy to lose myself in my diary when I am away from my usual activities.

What super power would you like to have?

X-ray-vision (影像) if can control it.

What is your favorite food?

I'm never happier than when I'm drinking banana milkshakes. And I love fish. But I don't like drinking fish milkshakes. They are just terrible!

What is your favorite book?

Alice in Wonderland. It has so many surprises and such silliness in it.

Do you write for adults too?

Only if I really have to. I much prefer the freedom and fun of writing for children.

What do you say to kids who say,"Why should I read?"

As Dr. Seuss says, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."

Wuhan is the capital city of Hubei. it is a beautiful, large and very important city in China. During last Spring Festival, the city received much tons of attention because a novel corona—virus (新型冠状病毒) appeared there and spread around the country. Several days before the Spring Festival，Wuhan was locked and the city became quiet and still. 

A big fight against the novel corona— virus was going on there. The doctors and nurses there became brave warriors (勇士) in masks (口罩), glasses and protective suits. Many of them had to work over ten hours every day drinking little or no water. They risked their health and even lives to treat the patients. Thousands of doctors and nurses from other cities and provinces in China went to Wuhan to support them. There is no doubt that they were all heroes in the fight. 

Besides doctors and nurses, everyone in our country was doing their own part in the fight against the novel corona—virus. 

That Spring festival was not as fun as it usually is. It even brought us to tears many times. However， we will never forget those difficult days, not only for the awful virus, but also for the efforts we made together and the lessons we learned.
