To My Best Friend

On a sunny morning, I am listening to the music. The soft music reminds me of my best friend, Sarah. There are many things I want to say to her.

Thank you for being there for me throughout all of the seasons of my life — the ups and downs, the beautiful and the ugly. You have offered me a shoulder to cry on whenever life has become hard. You have helped me in ways I didn't even know.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Whether it's been sending me the funniest pictures on the Internet or singing with me my favourite singers' songs, you have given me some of the best laughs of my life.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Whenever I have doubts about myself, you remind me of who I am and why I should be proud to have grown into the person I am. And thank you for always being honest with me. Whenever I make a stupid mistake, you always bring me around to face reality.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Without your encouragement, I wouldn't have applied for(申请) and landed the well-paying job that I now have.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}You have taught me what it means to be a loving friend and what it means to receive love. There is something special about our friendship that cannot be found in any other relationship I've ever had.

James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.

"J. C.," he replied.

She thought he had said "Jesse", and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down the stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens' victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners.

"It was all right with me," he said years later. "I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway."

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens' Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.

"Sure, it bothered me," he said later. "But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat."

In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. "They have kept me alive over the years," he once said. "Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard."

Wu Zeyin, 12, comes from Hubei, China. He {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(move) to Botswana with his family eight years ago. "I can see only a few kinds of fruit and vegetables at supermarkets here. They don't look good, but their prices are high," Wu said

Because of the desert climate (气候) in Botswana, it is {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(true) difficult for farmers there to grow fruit and vegetables. Botswana has to buy lots of fruit and vegetables from other{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(country), such as South Africa. Botswana has been working with China {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(solve) this problem. In July 2022, Botswana started {#blank#}5{#/blank#}program to grow China's water - saving rice. Knowing it, Wu wanted to help with local agriculture (当地的农业) in his way. "I dreamed {#blank#}6{#/blank#}creating an app to help local farmers," Wu said.

Wu has a good brain and he has made his dream come true by {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(develop) a new app called Farm Assistant. The app can teach farmers how to grow vegetables such as potatoes, onions, carrots and cabbages. Farmers who use the app can click ( 点 击 ) on a picture of a vegetable to see {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(it) seed (种子) price, watering needs, selling price, etc. After the farmers plant the seeds, the app can remind them {#blank#}9{#/blank#}they need to do at different times. Wu hopes his app can make the farmers' work a lot {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(easy) than before.

What a useful app and what a smart boy!

On the evening of July 31, 2024, a great moment happened at the swimming event of the Paris Olympics. Pan Zhanle, a Chinese swimmer, won the gold medal in the men's 100- meter freestyle(自由式).

Before the competition, the Chinese team faced a lot of 1 . The past results were not very good and many people didn't 2 they could win. But Pan Zhanle was 3 and ready to fight.

When the race started, Pan Zhanle jumped into the water 4 . In the first 50 meters, he showed 5 power and took the lead. His strokes(划水动作) were powerful and his breathing was regular.

In the second half of the race, it became very6 . Other swimmers tried hard to catch up, but Pan Zhanle 7 his lead with great skills and strong will.

Near the end, everyone was very nervous. Pan Zhanle swam as fast as he could and touched the wall8 with a wonderful time of 46.40 seconds. He broke the world record and won the gold medal.

After the race, Pan Zhanle was very excited. He said in an interview, " There were some unfriendly situations before,9 they made me more determined (决心). I wanted to show the power of Chinese10 !"

I'm Anna, a college student. I think I'm quite good at {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(cook). Most people seem to enjoy eating the food I cook for them.

I first {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(start) trying to cook when I left home and went to college. I didn't   have much money and it was much {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(cheap) to cook my own food sh an to eat in the canteen(餐厅). Also, it isn't healthy to eat out too often. One cool thing {#blank#}4{#/blank#} college is that I had a small kitchen. I' ve bought some {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(machine) for cooking. And I' ll buy a blender soon.

I learnt p y {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(I). I used the Internet to look for the recipes(食谱)I was interested  · in. I also asked my parents sometimes. However, when I first started croking, most of my food   {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) terrible. But I learnt quite fast. Now,I always invite(邀请) my friends to my room and cook for them {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(celebrate) every festival together.

 Except(除....之外) at {#blank#}9{#/blank#} very beginning,I think I' ve found it quite easy, mainly   {#blank#}10{#/blank#}I enjoy cooking and I enjoy eating. But it's not something that everyone can learn to do. I think some people are just too impatient(没有耐心的) to learn to cook well.
