It is never too late to develop great study habits. However, starting to make some changes is hard. Even if you want to do well enough in school and improve your grades, maybe you're having trouble getting started in the first place! There are several ways that can help you.

Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Make a plan of your time. Then decide on good, regular (有规律的) time for studying. This weekly plan may not solve all of your problems.

Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable and quiet. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate (集中注意力).

Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the passage and how it is organized.

Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Taking notes helps you remember what the teacher says.

Develop a good attitude (态度) to tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry too much about your grade. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know that you need to spend more time studying.

Plastic straws (吸管) are a modern invention, although people have been using different types of things for drinking water for centuries. By the 1960s, plastic straws have become common. It is said that 500 million straws are used just in the United States each day.

So what's the problem?  The problem is that plastics, including plastic straws that are usually thrown away after one use, end up in the the world's oceans. As many as 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world's beaches and oceans.

There are many choices for people who need or want a straw. Paper straws are becoming popular. Straws made from a new kind of plastic, which is biodegradable (可生物降解的) and made from plants, are also a good choice. Companies are also marketing reusable straws made of glass or metal. People can carry these straws with them to use when they go to a restaurant. However, paper straws are about 6 cents each, and reusable glass straws are about 50 to 60 cents each, while a regular plastic straw only costs about a cent. That adds up for restaurants and food sellers that offer straws.

Because the use of plastic straws is getting a lot of attention these days, many businesses have decided not to use them. Starbucks has said that it will stop using plastic straws. McDonald's announced that it will start banning (禁止) straws at its restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Hotel chains such as Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt plan to stop using them. Even the whole cities, like Seattle, are banning the use of plastic straws. California now has a law in place that customers will only be given a straw if they ask for one.

The next time you're buying something to drink, think about your straw choices. Reuse, reduce, and recycle.

Winter is the best season of the year. During the winter, months, temperatures are usually colder and there are fewer hours of daylight. The winter months in most of China are November, December, and January. 

Cold winter temperatures are caused by the tilting (倾斜) of the Earth. When Earth's Northern Hemisphere (半球) is tilted away from the sun, there are fewer hours of daylight and the temperature is colder. When the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the sun, there is more daylight time and the temperatures are warmer. The tilting of the Earth as it spins causes the seasons to change. 

Animals have special ways of preparing themselves for winter. Some animals, like birds and butter- flies fly long distances, or migrate, to warmer places during the winter months. Other animals such as bears, gophers, snakes go to sleep through the winter. Squirrels and raccoons (浣熊) don't migrate or hibernate. Instead, they gather enough food during the fall months, so they have plenty to eat during the winter. 

In some areas, winter is a time when snow falls and gathers on the ground. People who live in these places can enjoy special winter activities like skiing or snowboarding. They can also build snow- men. When the water in lakes and rivers freeze, people can ice skate or go ice fishing!

What do you usually do when you get mad? Some people choose to shout out, throw things or kick walls. And some would like to lock themselves in a room and refuse to talk to anyone. In fact, there is a better way to calm down and let go of your anger. 

Some researchers did an interesting study. They wanted to see how different methods would affect people's levels(程度)of anger. The researchers asked about 100 students from a college to write down their thoughts on an important social problem. They told the students what they wrote would be evaluated(评价). Then the researchers gave each student a bad review that read, "I can't believe a college student would think like this. "That made the students mad as the researchers had expected. 

At the same time, the researchers checked all the students' anger levels and asked them to write down their feelings on a piece of paper. Then half of the students were told to throw the paper into the rubbish bins. The rest were asked to place the paper on their desks. 

When the researchers checked the students' levels of anger again, they discovered something fun. Those who put the paper on the desks showed little reduction(减少)in anger. But those who threw the paper in the rubbish bins were less angry. Actually, their anger levels were almost back to where they were before the study. 

When you get angry, try writing down your feelings on a piece of paper and then throw it away. You may feel as if you're throwing away your anger. 

Still remember(记得) the following poems? Memories return every time I read or hear them. 

 Have you noticed that people speak differently to babies compared to adults? Caregivers, especially mothers, change their speech when talking to young children. How? Their speech includes higher pitch (音高) and a wider pitch range (范围). They use shorter sentences and repeat words more often. You can think of it as baby talk. Researchers have recently discovered that dolphins also use baby talk with their babies.

The research team recorded sounds of 19 mother dolphins living in the Sarasota Bay area. The sounds of the same female dolphins were compared when they were with and without their babies. Chart 1 shows the sound of a female dolphin without her baby. The researchers found that when dolphins were with their babies, dolphin mothers had a wider range of frequencies (频率) of the sound-the maximum (最高 ) frequencies were higher and the lowest frequencies were lower.

The findings mirror the way that humans change the speech when speaking to babies. Dolphin baby talk may have a similar purpose to human"baby talk" it may help babies learn how to phonate. We humans don't only use baby talk with little babies, but with the children who are still learning to speak. As a result, our children are able to talk. That's exactly what happens to dolphins. The changes in speech don't just happen when dolphin mothers stay with very young babies, but also between mothers and babies that are closer to"toddler (学步的幼儿)" age. Another possible reason for using specific pitch is to catch the children's attention. It's really important for a young dolphin to know"Oh, Mom is talking to me now."

 The research about baby talk in dolphins reminds us how important it is in humans. Whenever we speak with a young child, how we say things could be as important as what we say.
