As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all 1 when she was ten. For her birthday, Renae's grandmother surprised her with a lovely 2 , Chloe.

"She was my best friend,"Renae says."She'd keep licking (舔) your face 3 you didn't stop her."

But soon the family had to send Chloe away because of her father's new job."I was just a little girl, so I had no 4 but to accept that. I felt so sick and sad," Renae says.

In time, Renae grew up, got married and had a child of her own. Remembering the 5 of having a dog, Renae wanted her 6 to experience the same. Then one day she saw a post online about an old dog that needed a new home. The dog 7 Chloe. Without thinking much, she decided to adopt(收养) it.

"Don't go across the po nd today, children,"she says, as she kisses them goodbye one morning."It is    beginning to thaw."

"All right, mother,"says Harry, not very happy, for he likes running and skating on the ice very much.

When they come to the pond, the ice looks hard and safe.

"There,"Harry says to his sister,"Let's skate over it."

"But you promise mother,"says Annie.

"No, I don't. I only say‘All right', and it is all right."

"I don't say anything, so I can do as I like,"says Annie.

So they step on the ice and start to go across the pond.

They don't go far before the ice melts*, and suddenly they fall into the water.

A man who is at work near the po nd hears the children asking for help and rushes into the water to save them. They are almost drowned * before the man can reach them.

They get home almost frozen* and learn a lesson they will remember for a lifetime.

Some volunteers in Egypt（埃及） are teaching the children of refugee(难民 ){#blank#}1{#/blank#} from many African countries.

Chris Rupke teaches at the African Hope School in Ma'adi,{#blank#}2{#/blank#} town near Cairo. Rupke says that some of the children he teaches{#blank#}3{#/blank#}one or both of their parents. Rupke adds that one boy was so badly influenced {#blank#}4{#/blank#}his experience that he was unable to speak. Then, a psychologist（心理学家） at the school got him to draw pictures of everything that had happened before.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}, after {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the pictures and working with the psychologist, the boy started to talk. Now, the boy is much {#blank#}7{#/blank#} than before.

Teacher Jean-Pie has worked at the African Hope School {#blank#}8{#/blank#} 2003.

Jean-Pie said that when he began, he met 6 refugee children under Cairo's bridges and in its public gardens. He tried his best{#blank#}9{#/blank#} them to come to school. At the refugee schools, most classesare taught in English. The students learn Maths, Arabic, Science, etc.

All the teachers there are nice and responsible（有责任感的）. They hope what they have done can really make a big{#blank#}10{#/blank#}to those refugee children.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.  ▲  It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.

The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.

Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.

The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

A schoolbag hanging outside is a secret code (暗语) between the driver and students living in a small village in Chongqing.

When the driver sees a schoolbag {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (hang) on the door of an old house, he stops and honks the horn (鸣喇叭) to answer the "code". A boy then {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (come) out and gets on the bus.

The boy's grandmother looks after him {#blank#}3{#/blank#} his parents work far from home. The boy, a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (nine) grade student, has to go back to school in the city every Sunday. To catch the bus, he and the driver, Cheng Lin, made the special "code". The boy's parents were deeply touched when they {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (hear) the news. They showed their {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (thank) to Mr. Cheng.

There are a large number {#blank#}7{#/blank#} left-behind children on this route. Mr. Cheng pays more attention to Fridays and Sundays which are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (important) than other days because the children travel back and forth to school on the days.

In 1742,a German mathematician( 数 学 家 )called Goldbach came up with {#blank#}1{#/blank#}new Maths problem.It was the famous/ Goldbach Conjecture(哥德巴赫 猜想).However,he himself couldn't solve it.Many other mathematicians tried, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}they all failed.
