Recently, a California college graduate's photos became popular on the Internet. In the photos, the graduate is working with her parents on the farm. Quickly, the 1 of the graduate —Jessica Rocha became well-known, too.

Jessica graduated from the University of California, Her parents 2 Mexico and they are farm workers. While she was growing up, they had her 3 on the farm alongside them. It helped her understand how4 it was to receive a higher education. She5 working on the farm in high school after classes. She would work at night with her father. She often6 very late but she still woke up at 5 a. m. to get ready for the city bus for school.

"I think my parents are great 7 they keep working, although the job is 8 and hard," she said. "No one thinks about or sees what9 behind a vegetable they buy at the store. But behind it is 10 who breaks his or her back every day working on the farm."

She said she 11 to work on the farm on weekends and school breaks even after she left 12 college and had a job with the University of California Police Department. And it was 13 because her parents had a great influence on her.

"Many times I wanted to give up, but my parents and their advice and support were the 14 I kept going," Jessica said. "I don't know15 I would be today without their help."

How do you deal with the difficulties you meet? For some people, they always tell themselves, "I can't do it." Is that right? After a special lesson, I found my 1 .

One day, our teacher Donna asked us to fill a paper with something we couldn't do. We were 2 at first but followed her. A student beside me wrote on his page, "I can't make a choice between staying at home and going out." I also began my 3 . So did Donna and even the things—"I can't let every student 4 reading…". We first knew that she had the same "Can'ts".

Then Donna asked us to fold the paper and place our "I Can'ts" papers into an empty box. She took the 5 and we followed her to the corner of the playground. "Today we'll bury (掩埋) our ‘I Can'ts'!" Donna said. 6 the hole was about three feet, the digging ended. Thirty-one students stood there to see "I Can'ts" disappearing 7 making any sound. Some students asked Donna why we did this.

Donna said that we shouldn't repeat our "Can'ts" because they 8 stop us from moving forward. A more useful way is to keep 9 . "I Can'ts" should give way to "I Cans". Maybe someday, with our "I Cans", we will make an even bigger mark on the world. Then we may not 10 that how great changes have taken place to us and the people around us.

Chinese students thank their teachers on September 10th, Teachers' Day. How do American students thank their teachers?

First of all, US schools thank their teachers the whole first week in May. Their special Teachers' Day falls on the Tuesday of that week. During the week, the school will have special parties and give teachers gifts. There are "Thank you" signs everywhere to thank teachers.

US students give small gifts to their teachers to let them know how great they are. It could be a simple gift like a thank-you card with a personal message. US teachers love it because they think it's meaningful. They like it even more when students say "thank you" directly (直接地) to them. US teachers like getting arts and crafts (手工艺品) from children best. Little things to decorate (装饰) their classroom are also common gifts in the US. This could be a small plant.

It doesn't take much to celebrate a Teachers' Day. But students shouldn't just wait until Teachers' Day. 他们应该一直都感谢他们的老师。

AFamily Bakery

It's 3:00 in the morning. Angela is ready to start the day at the family bakery(面包房). Vincent and his wife, Angela, are its owners(主人).

Everyone in the family works in the bakery. The oldest daughter, Claire, is good at making cakes. Maria is the middle child. She works at the counter(柜台),and sometimes she makes cookies. Paul, the youngest, is 14,and he makes bread. Vincent says, "Paul has good hands for bread." All the family work in the bakery ,but the children only work there before or after school.

The bakery is open every day. The bakery sells cookies, cakes and bread. Mr. Martin is a regular customer(常客) ． He goes to the bakery every morning. He always takes the round loaf of bread with no butter. He says it's good. Mrs. Salerno is also a regular customer. Every Friday, she buys two loaves of Italian bread and a large box of cookies. Her six-year-old daughter, Laura, always gets one free cookie. Mrs. Salerno says Vincent's bakery is the best in the city.

About three years ago, I felt very lonely. I didn't like my classmates, my parents or anyone else. My classmates didn't want to talk {#blank#}1{#/blank#} me. And my parents were always saying that other kids were {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(good) than me. I thought I was the unluckiest person in the world. 

One day I had {#blank#}3{#/blank#} big fight with one of my classmates. I was so angry {#blank#}4{#/blank#} I hit him in the face. Just at that moment, a boy stood up{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(stop) the fight. He was the monitor of our class. After that, he often helped me and we became good {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(friend). Whenever I got angry or sad, he would help {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (1) to cool down. My life began to change {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(slow) because of the boy, my best friend. As time goes by, I have become happier with people and things. And people around me {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(change) too. My parents don't shout at me any more and my classmates become kind to me. But now we go to different cities to study. I miss the days when we were together!{#blank#}10{#/blank#} beautiful days they were! And I really miss him. 

Mushrooms are tasty and rich in healthy nutrients (营养物), which makes some people  collect them in the wild. However, eating the wrong mushrooms can make you sick or even dead. Therefore, growing mushrooms yourself inside your own home is getting popular.

There are two ways to do this. You can buy a set of materials from a garden store called a "grow kit (工具包) "or you can put them together yourself.

Grow kits(GK)

Grow kits are a great way for beginners to try growing mushrooms. These grow kits include partly-grown mushroom starters, called "spawn." (菌种体) The spawn is set in soil (土壤) and is planted in its own grow box. You put the spawn in water overnight. Then you return it to the box and open it to fresh air. Water it twice a day.

Within two or three weeks, you will be eating mushrooms with more on the way. It is fun and easy.

Putting them together yourself(PTTY)

If you want a larger harvest, it will cost less to put the materials together yourself. It is easy, too.

For starters, you will need a wooden, metal, or plastic box and some soil mixed with compost (肥料) and other materials. You will also need to buy fungal spores (真菌孢子) (something like seeds).

With clean hands, fill the box with your soil and materials. Put the spores evenly over the soil substance (物质) and water it twice a day gently.

To grow quickly and effectively, the spore-topped soil material should be kept away from direct sunlight. It should be kept at or close to 21℃. Put a piece of cloth lightly over the top of the box to keep moisture(水分) in. But do not cover it tightly (紧紧地). After it was coated with mycelium (菌丝体), move the box to a cooler place —12℃ to 15 ℃.

Mushrooms grow very quickly. With their tops fully open, they will be ready to harvest. That will be in about three to four weeks. Use a sharp, clean knife to cut them at soil level to avoid influencing nearby growth.
