Canada Day

Since 1982, July 1st has been officially known as Canada Day. Canadians of all ages take part in this festival across the country.

Canada Day is the year's biggest national party. In many towns and cities, the government organizes a lot of events, often outdoors. These include parades (游行) , concerts, festivals, firework displays and ceremonies for new Canadian citizens (公民) .The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada's national flag, a symbol for Canada Day, can be seen everywhere and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada's national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, are especially grand and exciting.

In the province of Quebec, many home rentals (租赁) start on July 1st and last for exactly one year, and many people in Quebec spend Canada Day moving from one house to another. So in Quebec, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day.

Many organizations, businesses and stores are closed this day. Only some bookstores, hospitals and gas stations may be open. Post offices are closed, too. As Canada Day falls in the Canadian summer holiday period, all schools are closed as well. In some areas, special services are provided for large events. The concerts, parades and festivals may cause some traffic jams.

Have you ever been to Thailand(泰国)? It is a country in Southeast Asia. I've been in Thailand for a few days with my parents. We are here for a holiday. 

Now we are staying in Bangkok. It is the capital of Thailand and it is a very interesting place to visit. Yesterday we visited some places of interest in the city. They were great!①今天早上，我们去购物。Bangkok was a wonderful place to shop for jewelry（珠宝）and clothes. My mother bought some beautiful dresses. My father and I bought some fashionable T-shirts. 

Thailand is called "Land of Smiles" because people here are very friendly. And it's true! When we eat in the restaurants in Bangkok, the waiters are really nice and they are always smiling.②Thai food is delicious, but it is a little spicy（辛辣的）for me. You can also get Chinese food here because a lot of Chinese people came to live in Bangkok many years ago. Chinese food is very good, and it isn't as spicy as Thai food. American food can also be found in Bangkok. 

Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters in the streets. 

This situation is becoming more and more common in China. It's guochao or China-Chic. Guochao adds traditional Chinese culture {#blank#}1{#/blank#} products, and it shows the rise of China's local brands. 

Before 2018, famous foreign companies p{#blank#}2{#/blank#} a main role in the world market. There were few Chinese brands. In 2018, Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning made changes to the situation. It introduced its Wu Dao collection to the world. The collection not only looked cool, but also i{#blank#}3{#/blank#} elements (元素) of traditional Chinese culture. It quickly {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(catch) people's eyes at home and abroad. And it created a{#blank#}5{#/blank#} sales. 

Soon, Chinese local brands became more and more popular all over China. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candies bring back childhood m{#blank#}6{#/blank#}for many people, began to sell other products, like milk tea and ice-cream. By doing so, it w{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the heart of young people. 

These brands got what they wanted. Young people gradually turned their attention from western culture to guochao. Some of them are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (work) together to spread Chinese culture to people around the world. 

According to a survey, 68% Chinese people prefer Chinese brands. Among them, 62% say they are o{#blank#}9{#/blank#}to international brands, but local brands remain the first {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (choose). 

No matter how guochao develops, there is one, thing that won't change-people are, becoming more and more confident about our country's development and culture.

Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words "clear" and "bright" describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors (祭拜祖先). However, here are some things you may not know about Clear and Bright. 

Spring Outings

Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers come out, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to enjoy the beauty of nature. 

Flying Kites

Flying kites is an activity loved by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be driven away by doing this. 

Cuju

Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs in it. It is said that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival. 

Qingtuan

In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan tastes special.

 In A Life in the Trees, Rebecca Moore goes 15,000 kilometers from London to Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea, Rebecca meets the Kombai people. She writes about their lives in the jungle(丛林).

 Moore lives with the Kombai women and children for three months. The Kombai people have no watches and no cars. There is no school for children. Parents teach their children to cook, hunt(狩猎) and swim.

 The Kombai get up every morning at sunrise. Kombai men hunt in the jungle. They can hunt for 12 hours. They also cut down sago palms. The women cook the inside of the trees. The Kombai people eat this food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 The biggest thing of Kombai life is building(建造) their tree houses. The men, women and children all help build tree houses. Each house is 20 meters high. The stories in this book show the Kombai people's lives in the trees.
