The Lantern Festival falls on the first full moon of the new lunar year. The Festival, with{#blank#}1{#/blank#}history of over 2,000 years,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(date) back to the Han Dynasty. The festival originates from an Act, released by Emperor Wendi of the Western Han Dynasty, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(honor) deities(神明) and ancestors with lantern displays.

A large quantity of customs and traditions are associated with the Lantern Festival, one of {#blank#}4{#/blank#} is the lighting of Lanterns that {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(display) in different shapes and sizes. In many northern parts of China, grand lantern displays featuring diverse sizes and themes, create an attractive scene, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}, in the south, the tradition of floating lanterns offers a beautiful gesture of releasing the past to embrace the future. More than just a visual feast, the lanterns are part of China's intangible cultural heritage, representing hope and renewal as they light up the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(dark) to welcome the new year.

{#blank#}8{#/blank#}important tradition is the solving of lantern riddles. Lantern owners write riddles on pieces of paper and attach them to their lanterns while festival-goers of all ages stroll among the lights, trying to solve these riddles. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(basic), successful solvers often receive gifts, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The cultural celebration has successfully extended beyond traditional foods {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the way people prepare for the festival. 

When {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (ask) by a TV reporter to talk about air and water quality in his hometown, Qi Mu noted, "The air is great now, and we can take more walks and enjoy being outdoors again." He felt quite pleased because the villagers were living {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (harmonious) with nature once more. However, he could not forget about an earlier time {#blank#}3{#/blank#} his village had been struggling with a serious air quality problem.

In the 1990s, garbage from nearby city was usually brought to the village. "How can we make use of this?" The villagers wondered. Soon they found that garbage could be used {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (feed) pigs. "Over the next few years, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (dozen) of pig farms were set up," Qi recalled. But then nobody in the village wanted to open their windows. "The smell from the garbage and pig waste was making us sick," Qi said. The numbers of mosquitoes and flies were also {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (horrify). "Under such circumstances, no single women wanted to marry anyone in our village and move here," Qi {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (sigh).

The villagers could no longer tolerate the situation. So {#blank#}8{#/blank#} initiative was launched and "clean-up" campaign was added to the government agenda, including restricting large vehicles {#blank#}9{#/blank#} passing through the village. Garbage from the city was no longer disposed of in the village and more trees were planted. "We can all breathe more freely now that the natural beauty of our village {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (restore) since then," said Qi.

Delicate strokes(笔画), carved onto wood, with ultimate precision. This is woodblock printing, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} ancient printing technique that has promoted human civilization.

Certain people are believed{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (bring) Buddhism into China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907),when there was a strong need to produce a large number of Buddhist scriptures(经文)，and copying by hand could not meet the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (rise) demand. Ancient Chinese craftsmen thus came up with a novel way to create printed works massively. Hence came the{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (origin) version of woodblock printing.

Traditional woodblock printing can be divided into four major steps: writing, engraving, printing, and binding. With each step then sub-divided into several procedures, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} takes roughly 30 steps to produce a woodblock print. Characters and images{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (carve) to produce raised areas or lines, which calls for skilled hands.

The Buddhist scripture Diamond Sutra, the "earliest dated printed book", can only be seen in the British Library,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} a lot of Chinese treasures are stored. It is just one example of ancient works of art that not only tells the{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (wise) of our ancestors, but also is a witness{#blank#}9{#/blank#} the pursuit of beauty by Chinese craftsmen throughout centuries.

The invention of writing gave life to great thoughts,{#blank#}10{#/blank#} it was the invention of printing that made knowledge a shareable fruit for all humankind.
