In the coastal city of Laguna in Brazil(巴西), there is a special fishing team. It is made up of human fishers and dolphins! They work together to catch the same food-mullet(鲻鱼).
Mauricio Cantor from Oregon State University, US, studied this relationship. As he told Science News Explores, the cooperation started more than a century ago. "The dolphins are really good at finding fish and driving them to the coast," Cantor said. "Fishermen are really good at catching the fish with their nets."
Cantor's study described how fishers and dolphins give signals (信号) to each other during fishing. When dolphins find fish, they drive them to the coast. Then they arch (拱起) their backs in front of the fishers to tell them to cast(撒) nets. Fishermen will then cast the net s right away, or they may lose the best chance. Fishermen need to be well-trained to understand the signals from dolphins, said Cantor. Once the fish are caught in the nets, dolphins can move in and get some as their food.
The study found that fishers are 17 times more likely to catch fish by working with dolphins. At the same time, cooperative dolphins have 13% higher survival rates (生存率) than other dolphins."Human-animal partnerships give us an idea of how well our human can get on with nature," Cantor said.

EMERGENCY? WHAT EMERGENCY?
An emergency service (紧急服务) should be like that: a service that you phone in an emergency. You might need to call the police if you're in a car accident. But some people phone the emergency services for some unimportant reasons (原因). {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
Here are some examples we heard about from emergencycentres all over the world.
1 'I ordered food from a Chinese takeaway and it didn't come. I'm so hungry! Can you tell them to hurry up, please?'
2 'My children are making such a loud noise and I can't think about things. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}
3 There's a black cat in my garden. Black cats are such unlucky animals. Can someone please come and take it away?'
These calls are funny to read about, but they can have very serious consequences (后果) . 'Every call takes about a minute,' said one man who works in emergency services. 'Maybe that doesn't sound a very long time, but in that one minute, other people are calling who really have an emergency. And for them, a minute might be really important.'
So let's get really serious: {#blank#}3{#/blank#} And of course, remember that you should never phone them with information that's untrue!
A. And it's hard to believe these calls are real! B. THINK before you call the emergency services. C. Can you give me his telephone number? D. Can you come and take them away, please? |

Follow the pool rules and signs. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}So look for and read the pool safety information carefully before getting into the water. And don't jump into any water unless you knowhow deep it is.
Be patient. They are there to protect (保护) you. Start by swimming once or twice a week, and don't expect to break any speed or distance (距离) records in a short time. Maybe in the beginning you can only make it halfway across the pool before you need to take a break, and that's okay. As you practice more, you'll be able to swim for longer each time.
A. It takes time to improve your swimming skill. B. Swimming is the same as other sports. C. You never know what may happen while you're swimming. D. If you develop pain while swimming, stop and rest. |
