Ice frolicking (冰嬉)

Ice frolicking was a term for many ice activities. It started in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty. It took place mostly in the north of China during winter. If one was good at it, he would be chosen to perform in the palace for the emperor and his family.

Fangzou (方走)

In the Yuan Dynasty, a long distance race called fangzou was held once a year. It was 600 years before the first modern Olympic Games. Like today's popular city marathon (马拉松) in the world, fangzou was also held between the two capital cities of the Yuan Dynasty at that time. It was almost as far as two marathons.

Cuju (蹴鞠)

Nowadays, football is popular all over the world. In 2004, FIFA (国际足联) announced that cuju was the world's earliest form of football. In Chinese "cu" means kicking, and "ju" means a leather ball. In the Qing Dynasty, cuju was one of the most popular activities during festivals. It was later introduced to Europe. In the 19th century, the British set up a set of rules and the modern football game was born.

With the passing of time, the rules and names of sports events have been very different, but people's love for sports has remained the same.

One night, my family was driving back from visiting my uncle in the middle of a very bad snowstorm.

The road was normally two lanes (车道) going in each direction, but there was so much snow that it was down to one lane. We were scared, but we felt safe because my father used to work as a truck driver. He's a very safe driver.

We were all alone on the highway until three cars pulled up right behind us. They used their lights of the car and beeped their horns (按喇叭), wanting to get by us, but there was no place for us to pull over.

After a while, we stopped at a restaurant to wait for the storm to calm down.

The three cars behind us drove in too. They were full of young men. They were talking about how slow we were driving. One of them said loudly enough for us to hear, "If you don't know how to drive, you shouldn't be on the highway."

Soon after, the young men left even though the storm was getting worse. My father decided that we should wait inside, hoping the storm would stop.

After it cleared a little, we headed down the road. Finally, we came around a turning. We could not believe our eyes—the three cars were all in the ditch (沟渠)!

Dad ran to the cars. The young men were all okay, but they were freezing and very frightened. A police officer arrived and took some of the young men to the next gas station. We gave two of them a ride.

It was a very quiet drive. My dad turned to the young driver and said with a little smile, "You know, if you don't know how to drive, you should stay off the road."

The man was very upset. My dad smiled and said, "I was a truck driver for fifteen years and we had a saying: There are old drivers and there are bold (大胆的) drivers, but there aren't any old bold drivers."

The young man understood and hung his head in shame.

My parents and I take a trip to the mountain on the Double Ninth Festival（重阳节）each year. We always g{#blank#}1{#/blank#} up very early in the morning. The weather is usually cool at this time of year, so we always spend our whole day there. As we walk t{#blank#}2{#/blank#} the forest, the wind b{#blank#}3{#/blank#} gently on our faces. The mountain roads are c{#blank#}4{#/blank#} by dry yellow leaves. Everything is so beautiful! We always have p{#blank#}5{#/blank#} at the top of the mountain.

My father died when I was five. It was hard on us all. My brother，who is eight years older than me，began to watch over my mother and me. 

Because of my father's death，my mother was forced to get a full-time job. My brother would get me up for school，and make me breakfast. While I was eating，he would lay out my clothes，and gather my school books up. Hand in hand，we would walk to the bus stop. As we waited，he would play games my father used to play with me. He did his best to make me happy，and he succeeded every time. 

When we arrived home from school，we were alone for about half an hour，until mom was home from work. He would sit me down with three cookies and find something for dinner，having everything ready for mom，so she could start cooking. 

It was a Saturday in June a couple of years later. My mother and I were at the store. They had the Father's Day cards out. I looked at the cards. My mom said，"Honey，I know this is a hard time for you. "I said，"No，mom，that's not it. Why don't they have Brother's Day cards？" 

She smiled and said，"You're right，your brother has certainly been a father to you. Go ahead and choose a card. " 

So I did. On Father's Day，my mother and I sat my brother down and gave him the card. 

As he read it，I saw his eyes watering. My mom said，"Son，your father is proud of you. You do your best to fill his shoes. We love you，and thank you. "
