What should you do if there's an earthquake（地震）at school？ How can you save yourself when you are caught in a stampede（踩踏）？March 25 this year provided you with something about safety（安全）. 

This day is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students（NDESEMSS）（全国中小学生安全教育日）. The topic of the day this year is to help students learn more about safety and make sure their lives safe. A survey shows that school accidents kill more students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries（伤害）. What can we do to keep ourselves safe？ Staying calm（冷静的）is the first and most important rule when facing accidents. But we have different advice on different accidents. 

A stampede is possible anywhere. The more people get together, the more likely stampedes are to come. When students around you begin to push, you should stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. 

Earthquakes are common. When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoor, don't stay near buildings, trees or power lines. 

When there's a fire, follow the teachers' words, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don't breathe in smoke.

There are lots of great people at home and abroad. Madame Curie was one of them. 

It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself.

"Not bad, Stone, not bad," he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn't ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls' heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.

"Perfect," he thought. "Good enough for a toothpaste ad."

As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.

But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.

Why didn't his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his "little" sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from?

He certainly didn't get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother's side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.

Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay's short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn't like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.

But Jay couldn't see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.

Jay shook his head. "Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that's me," he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother's voice.

"Jay! It's breakfast time!"

Travel and tourism(旅游) are very important to millions of people all over the world. It's important to some countries too. They need the money from tourism to help their people live better. 

However, travel and tourism cause many problems. Planes, buses, boats and other ways of transportation that carry travellers and tourists cause pollution. Moreover, some people do things on holiday that they would never think of doing at home. For example, many travellers use a lot of water and electricity when they stay in hotels. They forget to turn off the lights or even leave televisions and air-conditions on when they leave the room. That's why it is important for people to travel wisely and respect(尊重) the places they visit. 

There are ways you can travel and be environmentally friendly. Here are some tips to help you. 

●Don't throw rubbish anywhere. Use bins(垃圾桶). Don't throw anything into the sea, especially plastic bags. Every year many sea animals die because of plastic bags. 

●Don't waste water or electricity. Many parts of the world have not got enough water. 

●Don't buy any products made from endangered animals.
