    Langston Hughes was a famous black poet (诗人). And he also wrote novels, plays and short

    Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, the US. He  with his grandmother in Lawrence, Kansas. She told him stories about their family. These stories made Hughes feel proud (自豪的) to be black. He  to write when he was living with her. During his life time, he wrote a lot about black people. his poems, novels and stories, Hughes helped other black people to see themselves as part of a much bigger group of people.

    After his grandmother died in 1915, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to live with mother and her new husband. Hughes went to high school there. His first short stories came out (出版) when he was still in high school.

    After finishing high school in 1920, he  to Mexico City to live with his father. Hughes had a very  relationship (关系) with his father. His father didn't want him to be a writer. He said that Hughes could go to only if he studied engineering (工程学). Hughes agreed. He went to Columbia University in New York City in 1921 but left the university in 1922 because of his colour.

    A man named Bill once visited a temple that was still being built. He saw a sculptor(雕刻家) {#blank#}1{#/blank#}a sculpture. As he watched the man work on the sculpture, he noticed that there was a similar sculpture lying nearby.

    He felt strange and asked the sculptor, "Why are you creating two{#blank#}2{#/blank#}sculptures? Do you need two to put in different{#blank#}3{#/blank#}?"

    "No." the man said without looking up, "We need only one, but the first one became damaged(损害) {#blank#}4{#/blank#}I could finish it, so I'm working on a new one."

    Bill picked up the damaged sculpture and examined it{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. But he couldn't find {#blank#}6{#/blank#}wrong with it.

    "Where is the damage?" he asked.

    "There is a scratch(划痕) on the sculpture's nose." the sculptor said while{#blank#}7{#/blank#}his work.

    Bill then asked, "Where are you going to place the sculpture?"

    The sculptor replied that it would be placed on a platform which is 20 feet in height. "If the sculpture is up that high,{#blank#}8{#/blank#}is going to notice that there is a scratch on the nose?" Bill asked.

    The sculptor{#blank#}9{#/blank#}his work, looking up at the man and said, "I will know it."

    The sculptor chose a high standard of excellence in his work. Even if other people didn't notice it, it mattered to him that his work should be of the{#blank#}10{#/blank#}quality(质量). This is an attitude we should work hard to have.
