Until the beginning of July, there has been no rain in northern Italy for over 100 days. Add to that the high temperatures, and the locals get very dry conditions. This is the most serious dry spell（干旱期）for that area in the past 70 years. Because of this situation, the country's longest river, the Po, is drying up!

This is bad news for several different reasons. The fresh water of the Po provides drinking water for northern Italy. Besides, farmers in this area need the water of the Po to keep their crops growing. What's more, the flowing river water is used to create about half of the hydroelectric power（水力发电）for Italy. Its drying up means that more natural gas（天然气） will be used, which is bad for the environment.

There have been some interesting discoveries from this lack of rain, however. Between Florence and Milan, a long ship sunk （沉没）in 1943 appeared because of the low water levels of the river. Now many tourists and locals come to see this ship. A German tank has also appeared out of water near Mantua. At other places along the river, people can even walk on the sandy river bed. Although this may be interesting, people in Italy and around the world are hoping for the return of rain to refill the Po!

Did you know that cigarette butts(烟头) are the most common form of rubbish in our lives? People throw about 4.5 trillion(万亿) of them into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can kill fish, and they have been found in the stomachs of sea turtles, birds and other wildlife. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

Now, Dutch company TechTics plans to help solve the cigarette problem with its BeachBot (BB).{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Even part of the butt hidden in the sand can be found. At just 80 centimeters wide, BB has four wheels, two cameras and two arms to pick up cigarette butts. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Once it finds cigarette butts, BB just needs to place them into a bin(垃圾箱) that it carries. After it finishes cleaning, people deal with the waste properly.

However, BB still needs help to tell the difference between things like a cigarette butt and a small seashell(海贝壳).{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Using this app, anyone with a smartphone can send BB photos of cigarette butts to help the robot learn to know them. Besides that, TechTics works on a pair of smaller robots that can look for cigarette butts. They tell the larger robot where the butts are so it can pick them up.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}But while the robot works well without wasting time, TechTics wants to get people to litter less. If people stop throwing their cigarette butts onto the beach, robots like BB wouldn't be necessary.

 Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor(味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions' great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals that improve your ability to fight off illness and you have fewer chances of getting ill. 

 No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut an onion, irritating chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes. 

 Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions. 

●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes. 

●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes. 

●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes. 

 If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don't worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion's chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears" happy tears". 

On a summer day in 1948, a Swiss man named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When they came home, George discovered that he and his dog were both covered with burrs (带芒刺的小果实). 

As an engineer, George naturally began to wonder how the burrs stuck (刺入) to his dog and his clothes. Then he looked at them carefully. He found that the burrs had little hooks (钩子), which allowed them to catch on to things like clothes. George realized that he could use this finding to create a new way to fasten (扣紧) things. 

It is a very long journey from the first idea to the final product. It was easy to find materials that could stick together, but finding materials that would continue to do so after years of use was difficult. George tested a very large number of different materials and production methods. After years of research and work, he invented what is known today as Velcro. In 1955, George started Velcro Industries to turn his idea into a product. In a few years, the product became popular around the world. 

Today Velcro is used everywhere. It's used in backpacks, jackets, wallets, children's toys, etc. It even turns up in places you wouldn't expect. For example, Velcro has been used by NASA for astronauts' space suits. The product was also used to hold the heart together during the very first artificial heart transplant (人工心脏移植). 

 Morse code (密码) is a system of communication that uses dots (●), dashes(), and spaces to represent(代表) the letters and numbers. In Morse code, the letters used often (such as"E") got a simple code, while those letters not often used (such as"Q") got a longer and more eomplex code. For example, letter A is one dot and one dash, letter E is one dot, and letter I is two dots. While letter Q is two dashes, one dot and one dash, and letter Z is two dashes and two dots.

The first message using Morse code was sent by Samuel Morse, one of its inventors, to Alfred Vail on May 24th,

1844. The two men were nearly 65 kilometers away from each other at that time. From then on, the way to communicate with people in far places was changed.

 Morse code is a helpful way to communicate, even in difficult and noisy environments. It can be sent by sounds, light, or in other unexpected ways. Jeremiah Denton Jr. was a prisoner(犯人) of war between 1965 and 1973 As a high ranking officer, he was forced to take part in a TV interview on May 2nd, 

1966. During the broadcast(直播), Denton Jr. pretended (假装) to be blinded by the camera lights in order to blink(眨眼) a Morse code message to those people watching at home.

 Later, Morse code was replaced first by the telephone, then the fax machine, and finally by the Internet. But isn' t it fun to send a message in Morse code to your friends? Give it a try!
