As the New Year of 2024 comes, some people love the tradition of making resolutions. So, how can you keep the New Year flag standing? Come to our school hall at 3:00 this Friday afternoon and listen to a talk by Ms. Ann Smith!

If your New Year's plan is to exercise five days each week, a plan like "I'll exercise on weekdays" would be not clear enough. A plan like "I'll exercise at school on weekdays during my lunch break"would be better.

★Get a little help from your friends.

Tell a few friends about your resolutions. Then if you want to give up at some point, they will be the ones to make you hold on.

★Make it fun.

Quan Hongchan comes from Zhanjiang，Guangdong. She is {#blank#}1{#/blank#}great diving（跳水） player in the world. 

Quan was born on March 28，2007. She is the {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（three）among（在……当中） the five children in her family. 

She spends over seven hours practicing diving every day. It is difficult，    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she practices it hard. 

It was a hard time for Quan when she just went to the sports school. She had to live far away {#blank#}4{#/blank#} her home. The girl cried a few times，but she {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（keep） on trying. "My mother was sick（生病的） and my family was poor，so I wanted {#blank#}6{#/blank#} （make） more money for my family. "Quan said. She was hard—working. She did very {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（good） at the Tokyo Olympics （东京奥运会） in 2021. 

Quan has good living {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（habit）. She gets up and goes to bed early every day. She never eats unhealthy food like ice—cream because her coach（教练） He Weiyi doesn't let {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（she） do so. 

Quan's dream is to get more champions（冠军） for China. I think her dream can come {#blank#}10{#/blank#}. "My father told me to stay true to my dream，"she said. She always tells herself to keep going. 

Is a crow (乌鸦) smarter than a seven- year- old kid?

When we think of intelligent animals, we usually think of dogs, cats, and apes (猿) . But do you know that crows are among {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (smart) animals in the world? 

Crows have memories and they are able to imagine the future. This {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (help) them solve problems like an ape. They even use tools sometimes. A crow can hold a tiny bar (棒) in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (it) mouth and use it to get at tasty insects.

Since twenty years ago, some scientists {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (study) how intelligent crows are compared to humans. They found that crows were able to solve a difficult problem just as {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (good) as a 7- year- old human. In another test, a crow solved an eight- stage puzzle within three minutes.

①Communication plays a big role in our everyday life. Being polite with words can help you have better relationships with other people. It's also just a great way to make other people feel comfortable around you. If you're not sure where to start, don't worry. Below you'll find simple tips you can take to start being more polite to other people. 

②The most basic tips are saying" please" when asking someone for help, saying" thank you" after someone has done something for you, and saying "sorry" when you do wrong things. As the tips are known to all, there is no need to go into details(细节), Let's move on. 

③Make small talks. Instead of jumping right into a serious discussion with someone, make small talks first. Discuss their days or the food they have for lunch. Talk about the movies or shows you're watching lately or books you're reading. This will help break the ice. 

④Show your concern(关心). Congratulate other people on their successes. When others do well, offer them your praise. If your friend is going through a hard time, try to offer a few words of comfort. 

⑤Avoid inappropriate(不合适的) topics. Some conversation topics can make people upset or uncomfortable, and you may risk hurting other people's feelings if you accidentally say something inappropriate. Some topics are okay to discuss with just very close friends. Otherwise, choose your topics carefully. 

⑥Good words are never lost. Not only will your good words bring sunshine to the lives of others, but also to yours. So, remember to always be polite with your words. 

Scientists have found that plants can make sounds. 

A scientist, Lily Hadany, and her team recorded(录制) tomato plants at different times. It showed that the plants made ultrasonic(超声波) sounds. People could only hear them with the help of a computer. They were noises like clicking(发出咔嗒声) sounds. 

As scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made different sounds at different time. They seldom clicked when they had enough water, but when they needed water, they clicked more and more. Scientists also found that plants made sounds when they got hurt. When scientists cut off a leaf from the plants, the plants also clicked more. But this kind of clicking wasn't the same as when the plants needed water. 

Some scientists designed a computer AI system to tell the different kinds of clicking sounds. It was able to find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to figure out when it is in difficult time, and what problem it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers. 

The team's finding changes our ideas about plants. As Dr Hadany says, "Even in a quiet field, there are sounds made by plants, and those sounds carry information and may help us a lot. "

Many of us get to see wild animals only when we visit zoos. These special places let us observe amazing creatures, from big lions and tigers to tiny lizards, and learn about them. It's both fun and educational, but do animals really like living in zoos?

In the past, people could only see dead animals shown in museums. Later, explorers caught live animals and showed them off in wildlife park. Back then, animal welfare(福利) wasn't important. But today's zoos have changed a lot. They' ve made bigger enclosures(围地), taken away bars, and tried to copy animals' natural homes.

Some people think keeping animals in cages for our entertainment is cruel. But zoos say they help wildlife by teaching us about conservation. In the UK, zoos must educate the public because of the Zoo Licensing Act passed in 1981. Good zoos also support protecting programs, which help protect wildlife in their natural homes.

Zoos today state they protect endangered animals because of climate change. Robert Young, an expert at Salford University, says many species would be gone without zoos. Some zoos have breeding(繁殖) programs to save animals from disappearance. For example, Chester Zoo in the UK brought back a rare fish by breeding and releasing them into their local river.

Even though people still argue about zoos, new ways to see wildlife are being developed, like virtual reality(虚拟现实). Imagine walking through a herd of elephants in the Serengeti— it might happen sooner than you think. As technology develops, new ways to connect with nature may become more popular.
