It was sunny last Saturday. Mr. Black {#blank#}1{#/blank#} his children to the zoo. When they {#blank#}2{#/blank#} there, they saw many people and animals.

The children went to the lake first. There they saw many fish {#blank#}3{#/blank#} in it. Jane was really happy, "Look, how beautiful the fish are! I hope I can swim {#blank#}4{#/blank#} them." Then they went to the bird garden. There were different {#blank#}5{#/blank#} of birds in it. These birds were not {#blank#}6{#/blank#} when people were near them. Mr. Black bought some bird food for the children {#blank#}7{#/blank#} them. The children were very happy. After {#blank#}8{#/blank#} many hours in the zoo, the children were hungry. Then Mr. Smith took them to a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} for lunch. The food was expensive {#blank#}10{#/blank#} very delicious. All in all, they had a great day.

I was in my room, slowly getting ready to head to the theatre with the rest of my family.

I don't want to put on the show in the theatre that day. "Kirstie, come here!" Mum called from down the hall.

"What is it?"I called back and found my mum outside the bathroom, holding a wet book.

Mum gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathroom. Did you put it there?"

"Not on purpose," I said disinterestedly,"It was already on the corner, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out." Mum looked at

me angrily,"You could have picked it up. That would be the kind thing to do."

Mum never acted like this before. Being kind wasn't actually that hard. But after Henry and his dad moved in, everything felt different. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, Mum took me aside.

"This is our corner of the world now, Kirstie,"she said. "Let's try to make it a good one. "

I nodded unwillingly.

The theatre was busy as usual. One play a year in the theatre used to be what Mum and I did together most excitedly. But now, with Henry here, it won't be special any more.

Soon, it was my turn. I forgot my anger at Henry when I went on the stage.

As we kids lined up on the stage, I realised how poorly I had tied(系) the drawstring on my skirt —my bow(蝴蝶结) suddenly came untied and my skirt began to drop — in front of hundreds of people!

It was not a dream! It was terribly real! People soon began laughing, and I could feel my face burning.

Then Henry, beside me, came to my aid! He tidied up my clothes, tying the drawstring with a beautiful knot (结). He made a joke about me"not"knowing knots, and most of the people laughed again! This time, the laughter felt OK!

At the end of the show, I found Henry and touched him on the shoulder. "Thanks!"

He smiled, "Knot a problem!"

I smiled guiltily (惭愧地 ). Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.

Once there lived an old man in a mountain village. He was a famous hunter. He often went hunting alone in the mountains. He was not afraid of any wild animals, not even a tiger. 

One night, someone saw a tiger come into the village, and stole two sheep away. The next night the tiger came again. The villagers were frightened. They asked the old hunter to catch it so that they could have a safe life. 

When the old man heard about the tiger, he thought hard. He wondered why the tiger came at night twice but only stole the sheep. The next night he walked outside the village. Suddenly he saw the tiger coming. He quickly threw himself on the ground. To his surprise, the tiger did not come at him. But went away. He followed it quietly and found it was running on two of its feet just like a man. Then everything was clear. 

On the fourth day, when it got dark, the hunter took some animal skins with him and hid himself behind a big tree near the village. He was waiting for the" tiger". As soon as the " tiger" came near the tree, the old hunter jumped out, caught the " tiger" by the "leg" and said, " Don't be afraid. I do not mean to hurt you. You know who I am, don't you?"

The " tiger" said " Yes" and took off the tiger's skin. 

"You are poor. But you mustn't steal anything from others. Here are some animal skins for you. You may sell them at the market. With the money, you can buy food and clothes for your family. Work harder and try to make a living. " With tears in his eyes, the poor man thanked the kind-hearted old hunter and walked home. 

When most people think of the Olympics, they don't think of science. But in the USA, each year students take part in a kind of competition called the Science Olympiad. It has a lot of different events. Students go there to show how much they know about the science of music, biology, chemistry and so on. My best event is forestry (森林学). This time, I went to the Olympiad with my school's team. We had worked hard, but this was the state competition. It would be hard to win. The Olympiad was out of town, so we got to ride on a bus and stayed in a hotel for a night. 

The Olympiad was in three big rooms. When we got there, we set up our team's "camp" off to one side. The big day had come at last! First, I went to watch the tower building competition. That's when students build small towers and put heavy things on top of it. They hope they can hold them up. One of my schoolmates was putting things on her tower. She was nervous, and in the end it was too heavy for her tower to hold it—it broke! I felt bad for her. After lunch, I helped some teammates with their events. One was geography, and the other was history. I don't know much about those things, so I just watched my teammates do most of the work. At last, it was time for my favorite event—forestry. Another student was also in the forestry event. The rules were easy. We had to look at more than 40 different kinds of leaves and find out which plants they were from. We also had to answer some questions about the uses of each leaf. I knew almost all of the leaves and could answer most of the questions. I had spent more than a month studying on the Internet to get ready. 

In the end, it was time for the awards (颁奖), l was nervous, because the forestry awards were last. We won second place in the whole state! A nice man gave me a medal and smiled at me. 

I had a great time at the Science Olympiad. I can't wait for next year!

"It's hard to say this, but I' ll have to leave school in a few weeks' time," said Mr Thomas, standing at the front of the classroom.

It was early on Monday morning and Mr Thomas' students were shocked(震惊的) at the news.All of them loved Mr Thomas very much and they never thought that he might leave.However, Mr Thomas reached the age when he was going to retire.After hearing the news, the class kept gloomy for the next few days until the class monitor gave them a small scolding(训斥).

"We should not be like this," she said."Instead(反而), we should study hard to thank Mr Thomas for being so good to us." The class agreed, and they thought of an idea of having a farewell(送别的) party for Mr Thomas to surprise him.

On Mr Thomas' last day at school, everybody brought a different kind of delicious finger food to class and put it in the middle of the classroom.They covered the blackboard with farewell messages.When Mr Thomas showed up, all the students said "Goodbye, dear teacher!" together and promised Mr Thomas that they would do their best in schoolwork in the future.

Mr Thomas was really surprised.And he was really touched.The class, in turn, was glad that they did the right thing.After all, it was the simplest way to show thanks to their favourite teacher.
