In November 1979, pupils in England were able to watch a new TV programme called Monkey. Most of them were hearing this story for the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time. However, this story is not new to Chinese {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

The Monkey King or Sun Wukong is the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} character in the traditional Chinese book Journey to the West.

The Monkey King is not just a normal monkey. In fact, he sometimes does not even look {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a monkey! This is because he can make seventy-two {#blank#}5{#/blank#} to his shape and size, turning himself into different animals and objects. To fight {#blank#}6{#/blank#} people, the Monkey King uses a magic stick. Sometimes he can make the stick so {#blank#}7{#/blank#} that he can keep it in his ear. At other times, he is able to make {#blank#}8{#/blank#} big and long. The kids of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} have loved the Monkey King for many years. And as soon as TV programme came out more than thirty years ago, Western pupils became {#blank#}10{#/blank#} in reading this story. Because the clever Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up.

Let's Protect Animals in Danger

Animals are our friends. I'm sure most of us like animals. But now many animals are in danger, such {#blank#}1{#/blank#} pandas, tigers, giraffes and elephants. 

Why are these animals in danger? One reason is that people kill these animals for their meat and fur{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(get) money. I'm sorry to hear that many wild animals lose their {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(life) every year. Another reason is that people are taking away their homes. People cut down a large number of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(tree). Many wild animals don't have a safe place {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(live). That's {#blank#}6{#/blank#} villages and farms are getting bigger and people are taking away their land and forests.

In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar (阴历) is called layue. The month is full of interesting festivals and customs. Laba Festival, which falls on the eighth day of layue, is the first festival in this month. 59.  从这天起，人们开始为中国的新年做准备。 On Laba Festival, people eat hot Laba porridge.

There are usually eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds (莲子), dates (红枣), and three different kinds of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but a blessing (祝福) for the coming of Chinese New Year. Laba porridge is not the only tasty food in layue. Laba garlic (腊八蒜)is popular in the north. People begin to soak garlic in vinegar from that day on, and eat it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year. While in the south, people like making sausages.

Another major celebration before Spring festival is xiaonian. It is usually on the 23rd or 24t day of the last lunar month. Traditionally it is an important occasion when people offer sacrifices (祭品) to the Kitchen God who looks after the family. Don't forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It means sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. 60. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.
