In the year of 1247, Italian explorers Marco and Niccolo Polo set out on{#blank#}1{#/blank#} 24-year journey. During the journey, they traveled the famous SilkRoad from Italy, through terrible deserts and very high {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (mountain) to the eastern China. They traveled over 4,000 miles in   all. Marco and Niccolo were among the very {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (one) Europeans to explore the empire of China. In China, Marco Polo even worked {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the ruler Kublai Khan. Polo described his experiences and findings in China by {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (write) a   book. Polo described materials and inventions never seen before in Europe {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (careful). Paper money, a printing press, gunpowder and coal were among the products he wrote about. He also talked about the vast wealth of Kublai Khan, as well as the geography of northern and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (south) China. European rulers {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (be) very interested in the products Polo described. However, trading for them along the Silk Road was {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (danger),expensive and impractical. European rulers began to wonder {#blank#}10{#/blank#} there was a sea route to the East to get the products they wanted at a reasonable price.

Lang Zheng touched (感动) people's hearts after the Wenchuan earthquake (地震) in 2008. He saluted (敬礼) the soldiers who saved him. He would go to Peking University {#blank#}1{#/blank#} he has done well in the gaokao.

On May 12, 2008, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} earthquake hit Wenchuan. The soldiers saved him from his fallen house. When the soldiers carried him on a stretcher (担架), he gave them a salute. A man took the picture of the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (move) moment and it touched the hearts of people across the country.

On Saturday, Lang knew he got 637 points. He was in the top 30 of hundreds of thousands of liberal arts exam participants (文科考生) in Sichuan. Lang has {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (receive) the admission notice (录取通知书) of Peking University.

Since 2008, Lang has been famous {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the salute. And then he was {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(call）the "Salute Boy". The name has given him much encouragement, rather than placing him under {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (press). "The special name encourages me {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (keep) studying and not to slow down," he said, "Going to university is just a new {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (begin). I should study {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (hard), and get more skills to give back to our country."

I was looking through my old photos last Sunday. One photo{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(catch) my eye. In the photo, I was sitting in a chair, hugging Duke, my best friend in the whole world.

Duke was an interesting name for such{#blank#}2{#/blank#}little dog. But he was my friend from the moment I could walk. He stayed with me in that chair when I read{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(book). When I went outside{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(play) games, he would drive our cats up to the trees and then walk off feeling proud of{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(him). When he was hungry, he would carry his food dish in his mouth and drop{#blank#}6{#/blank#}at my mom's feet. When I was sick, he refused to leave my bed until I got{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(well) than before.

I learned a lot from Duke. I learned that a short sleep at noon could be good{#blank#}8{#/blank#}you. I learned that simplest dinner can be delicious{#blank#}9{#/blank#}you eat it with great enjoyment. I learned that life can be good when you live it with love and joy.   {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(sad), I also learned that life is short, especially if you are a dog.

To me, Duke is like a teacher who has taught me how to love and to be loved.
