Today, people all over the world have the same hobbies, watch the same movies, and wear the same clothes.
In the East, it can take a long time to become someone's friend. People are very close to their friends. When people from the West meet you, they will call you a friend right away. When people from the East meet you, they often ask questions. They want to know about your age and your family. To people from the West, these are not polite questions. They don't like to talk about these personal things.
In the East, family is always a part of life. Kids there live with their parents for a long time. They still listen to them after they grow up.
However, in the West, independence (独立) is very important. Parents prepare their kids for life. Then, after their kids grow up, they say goodbye and leave home. They don't have to listen to their parents.
In the East and in the West, people think differently too. People in the West think about small de tails (细节). They also think less and act more. In the East, people notice (注意) relationships between things. And they often keep their opinions quiet.
A. Family is important for everyone. B. Parents teach you much about your life. C. That doesn't mean they are close to you. D. However, our cultures are still quite different. E. Later, the kids can choose to start a family or not. |
THIS IS HOW READING HAS CHANGED
CAVE(洞穴) PAINTINGS Cave paintings are the oldest pictures. Some of them, like the beautiful pictures in the caves in the north of Spain, are almost 30,we get an idea of how the people felt when drawing them. That's what the painters wanted to show others—hopes and fears. |
STONES AND PAPYRUS(纸莎草) Sometime between 4000 and 3000 BCE(公元前),people in Egypt developed the skill of writing. They put writing on stones first. But it was impossible to carry the stones from place to place. The invention of papyrus made it. It was easier to correct mistakes, too. |
PAPER AND PRINTING Paper was invented in China in 105 CE(公元年). The world's oldest known printed book is from China, too. It was published around 700 hundred years later. In Europe, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany. Since that time, almost 140 million books have been published. |
OTHER WAYS OF READING Books will be around for many years,of course. But there are many new ways of reading books, such as e-books and apps on mobile phones. |
