I'm Mrs Green. This summer holiday, I went to London with my husband and our son Sam. We first spent four days visiting some famous places, such as the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. On the fifth day, I was a bit tired and just wanted to stay at the hotel. But Sam didn't want to. He would like to visit the HMS Belfast, a famous warship(战舰)that joined the Second World War(战争). It is on the River Thames as a museum for people to visit now. It is very famous and Sam read about it in a magazine. Well, boys always love these things, so I promised to go with him. 

We took the underground and it took us about twenty minutes to get to the River Thames from our hotel. After walking another ten minutes we finally saw the HMS Belfast. An adult ticket was £ 24. 5 and my husband bought two. Sam was only 13 years old, so his ticket was half price. The HMS Belfast was really large. Sam was interested in everything on it and took lots of photos. He said it was his favourite place on his trip to London. 

Can knots be a form of art? It is in China.  It is used for decoration (装饰) on clothing or to hang on a wall.  Skilled knot artists make knots that you might see sold in stores that you can take back with you. 

What Is a Chinese Knot?

A Chinese knot is a knot that is tied and woven (编织) from a single length of rope to be different shapes.  Most knots have two cords (粗线) entering the knot from the top and two leaving from the bottom.  Each kind of knot is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries. 

Knot artists can use different colors, but they prefer deep red ones.  The color red means good luck in China.     ▲

At first, people may have made them to record information before people started to write.  One hundred thousand year old tools have been discovered that were probably used to tie and untie knots. 

It is known that they were used for artistic decoration and to express thoughts and feelings in the Tang Dynasty (618—907).  The traditional art form was carried on by people as part of their culture. 

Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots

Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families.  For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love.  The "true love knot"  and the "double happiness knot"  are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together. 

Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing.  They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces. 

Throughout history, many women have shown the world how powerful they can be. Meet some of them here.

The train started moving. It was packed with people of all ages. Most of them were working men and women and young college boys and girls. Near the window sat an old man with his son, who looked about thirty years old. 

As the train moved, the son was filled with joy because he was very excited at the scenery(景色) outside. He said in a high voice, " See Dad, the green trees and the scenery are very beautiful!" It made the other people feel very strange. Everyone started talking in a low voice about the old man's son. Suddenly, it started raining. Raindrops fell on the travelers through the opened window. 

Seeing the rain, the old man's son said happily, " See Dad, how beautiful the rain is!" Hearing these words, a young lady became angry with the man, as the raindrops were dropping on her new clothes. She couldn't help shouting at the noisy son and his father. 

" Can't you see it is raining? You ! Old man! If your son is not feeling well, get him to a mental hospital (精神病院) quickly and please don't disturb(干扰) us any more!" The old man's face turned slightly red and then in a low voice, he replied, " We are on the way back from hospital. He was blind at birth. Only last week he can see again. The rain and the nature are new to him. Please forgive him. " All the other people became quiet. 

Making a good job choice is almost as good as choosing a good life. So, choosing a job is one of the most important decisions to make in life. For my job, there are three important things that I will consider. 

The first one is that I must work in an area I like, and I think it is the most important to me. Someone once said, "If you find a job that you enjoy, then you won't have to work another day. "I would like to become more creative through my work. I would also like to be the most valuable member there. All this is possible only if I like what I do. 

The second one is that the area of my work must lead me to solve some new and hard problems. I would like to stay in the same area for a long time. In order for this to happen, the work must provide enough problems. More than just working to live, I enjoy making a difference and trying my best to make progress. I would also like to be well remunerated for my hard work, so I can lead a comfortable life with this hard-won money. Then I can provide the best for my family. 

The third important thing is that I would like to work in an area that would help other people. The work in my mind is in fields such as the army(陆军部队), training or management. In such areas, I can help to develop the abilities of others and bring out the best. It would be a most satisfying job to help young people to become the best that they can. When I become old, I would like to look back with a great sense of satisfaction that thousands of people have become better people through my work. 

I accept the idea that no one should make a choice of a job suddenly and quickly. He or she should decide what he or she wants to be in the long run. Then, he or she should decide how he or she works towards it. It's important to study the proper courses, read the books and speak to knowledgeable people in that field before making a job choice. A good choice will most probably lead to a better life.
