Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea?

Sometimes the answer isn't to just force an idea out of your mind.

Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander（走神）. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.

Daydreams allow your mind to run freely and even increase productivity in some cases. Daydreaming develops creativity which is why you have an ah-ha moment and sudden insight（领悟） about a situation. Daydreaming allows you to uncover thoughts and ideas you did not realize you even had and get the thoughts hidden under the surface.

Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, found a connection between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes making participants first do an "unusual-use task". They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.

Then, the participants choose to do one of the following four things before doing the "unusual-use task" again; complete a difficult task, complete an easy task, take a 12-minute break, or skip a 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.

Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.

But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as "unconscious thought". Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a way that you are unaware of.

When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.

Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.

Stephen Hawking was probably the world's most famous scientist after Albert Einstein. He was an expert on black holes. He put his whole life into digging into the beginning and the end of the universe.

"My goal is simple," Hawking once said. "It is to completely understand the universe, why it is as it is and why it is there at Hawking received many awards and prizes for his work over the years. This includes winning the Albert Einstein Award. It is the highest achievement in theoretical physics (理论物理)• But Hawking is achitvements are even greater if you think of his disability.

Hawking had a bad illness that stopped him from moving or talking. Later he got a wheelchair with a computer by his side. He moved two fingers to control the computer's mouse. He chose his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer (合成器). This helped him communicate better.

"I have had the disease for most of my life, and I even have had no way to communicate except by simple eye movements since 2011?^" Hawking once said. "Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work."

Hawking tried to make science more popular with people. In 1988 he wrote A Brief History of Time, sharing his understanding of the universe with other people. The book was a best-seller for a long time. So far, it has sold more than 10 million copies around the world. Hawking also wrote a children's book— Unlocking the Universe with his daughter. He said the book would be "a bit like Harry Potter" but without the magic.

Hawking liked pop culture. He sang in rock songs. He even played roles in popular TV plays including StarTrek{ 1992), The Simpsons(1999) and The Big Bang Theory(2012). He played himself in all these shows and was proud of making the audience laugh.

"Travelling by subway (地铁) is much faster. It not only takes me a few minutes to get to my office, but also I don't worry about traffic jam." a passenger says. A lot of people like taking the subway. It is a kind of popular way and more convenient in our daily life. It has three advantages (优点).

First, it's fast. The subway can run about 80 kilometers in an hour. It's much faster than riding a bike or taking a bus.

Second, it's accurate. It can help you get somewhere on time. Don't worry about the weather. It can arrive on time even if it is raining or snowing. During rush hour (交通高峰期), there is a subway every five minutes. You can't wait too long.

Finally, it is comfortable. It is very comfortable for passengers to take the subway. They can find a place to sit or stand here and there. They don't feel cold in winter or hot in summer because of the air-conditioners (空调). It can carry many people. I think most of people like it. You will have a good time to take the subway.

My name is Henry Adams. When I was 27, I worked in San Francisco. One Saturday afternoon, I sailed my little boat but a strong wind pushed my boat into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, I was saved by a British ship heading to London.

I had only one dollar when I arrived in I ondon. I was tired and hungry. At that moment, the window of a nearby house opened and a man said to me, "Come in here, please."I was taken to a beautiful room. There were two old gentlemen discussing something.     ① 

The two gentlemen were brothers.  ②  One brother said, "If an honest and clever stranger arrives in London without friends and money, except for a £1,00,000 bank note, he will starve to death. If he goes to the bank to change this big note, the police will think he stole it and arrest（逮捕）him." The other brother answered, "No, I disagree."

The two gentlemen decided to end their argument with a bet（赌约）.  ③  They chose me because I had an honest, clever face. Also, I was a stranger to England. One of them gave me an envelope and told me not to open it until I was in my hotel room.

 ④  After leaving the house, I opened the envelope and saw money inside of it! I rushed to the nearest restaurant. After eating, I tried to pay with the money but discovered that it was a bank note worth five million dollars! It made my head swim. No one could possibly cash（兑现金）it. The owner said, "You can pay for the meal whenever you want, sir. I understand that you are a rich gentleman. You like playing jokes on people by dressing like a poor man."

I quickly returned to the house but was told that they had left on a trip. Then I remembered the letter inside the envelope. It said, "In this envelope you will find some money. It is yours for only 30 days. At the end of that time, return to this house. We have a bet on you." How strange!

Then, I entered a clothes store to buy a cheap suit. When I showed the owner the bank note, he was angry since the salesman sold me such terrible suit.

Some people have sensitive (敏感的) feet or skin. Others may have a hard time laughing at their own mistakes. Perhaps you live with someone like this. But can you imagine living with a sensitive plant?

 Now, imagine that your hand is a green plant stem(茎) and each of your fingers is a leaf. Use your other hand to touch your leaf fingers. One at a time, close each leaf finger. until you have made a fist. Quickly drop your hand down to your leg. Wait a little while, and then slowly bring your hand back to its original(原来的) position.

 It's just this kind of behavior that has made the sensitive plant get its name. Brush your fingers gently across the leaves of the sensitive plant, and the leaves at once fold up(合拢) like tiny green fingers. The stems drop down as if ready to fall off the plant. About ten minutes later, the leaves open again, and the stems rise again! Sensitive plants are easy to grow inside your house. They simply need to get plenty of water and sunlight. But touching the plant too often can cause the plant to lose its leaves. A sensitive plant that loses many of its leaves may become unhealthy.

 Imagine the fun you can have: introducing a friend to your plant! Have your friend stand close to the plant to tell it jokes. Touch your plant with a finger, and watch your friend's reaction when the plant seems to drop down slowly to say"no". Be sure to tell your friend the true cause of the plant's behavior later, though. You don't want your friend to become overly sensitive about his jokes!

Aocidents could happen at any time. We must be careful all the time on the road, especially on the corner of the road and at traffic lights. The rules on the road are very important. If we learn and follow them, we won't have too many accidents. 

Most traffic accidents happen because people are careless. Most of these people are old people and children. Old people usually can't see or hear very well. Children are often too careless. Listening to music on the road is very dangerous. Some drivers drive too fast, so they usually cause traffic accidents. When a car is going very fast, it travels many metres before it stops. Bicycle riders will also cause accidents by changing directions(方向) suddenly. 

Before you turn left, you should check twice to make sure there aren't any cars or buses coming. When you want to turn left, you should show your left hand to tell the driver. You should not turn until the street is clear. 

When you want to cross the road, you should look at the right side and left side to make sure the road is safe. Remember not to play on the road.
