When my wife and I went to live in an Arab country, my friends told us to be prepared for a culture shock. Later, we realized that the advice given to us by our friends was correct.

The culture shock started with the weather. Here, the burning sun can cook an egg in a minute! The hot weather made us feel so tired that we were falling asleep at mid-day!

Another culture shock was the working week. We worked from Saturdays to Wednesdays, including Sundays. It was also strange to see people praying in a certain direction! They have strict rules for women. They do not let people see their faces in public. They do not let women drive cars, either. All dresses worn by women have to cover the body completely. They believe that women cannot be seen in public.

At the weekends, we went camping in the desert. I will never forget watching the sun setting over the desert. We also enjoyed riding on the camels. In the end, we enjoyed living there, but their culture is very different from the American culture.

(1)、The writer experienced the culture shock ________.
A、before going to the Arab country B、after camping in the desert    C、during staying in the Arab country D、while living at home
(2)、People in the Arab country do not go to work _______.
A、on Mondays and Tuesdays B、on Saturdays and Sundays C、on Thursday and Fridays D、on weekends
(3)、Which of the following are strict rules for women in the Arab country?

a. Cover faces in public.        b. Don't go outside.

c. Be dressed in white          d. Never drive cars.

A、a; c B、a; d C、b; c D、b; d
(4)、What does the writer think of living in the Arab country?

Jenny looked at the store window. There was nothing that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll. It was $29.95. Unluckily, Jenny didn't even have the 95 cents.

As she crossed the street, she thought about doing her brother's housework, cleaning the floor, washing the dishes all month, but even then she would have only eleven dollars. Suddenly, something small and pink in the snow caught her eyes.

Jenny walked over and picked it up from the snow. It was a beautiful wallet. She opened the wallet and found many dollars and a woman's driver's license in it. Jenny put the wallet into her bag quickly. She turned around and walked back.

Jenny's heart beat(跳动) fast as she went into the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right. As she got to the Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grabbed(抓起) one and walked toward the checkout.

As Jenny was waiting to pay, her mobile phone rang. It was her grandma. Jenny's heart was suddenly filled with love and warmth when she thought of her. She put the doll down and answered the phone.

“Hi, Grandma? I'm going to be a little bit late tonight...Alright...I love you, too.” Jenny left the store and walked all the way to 301 West Street. The woman who answered the door looked sad.

“Here, I found this in the snow,” Jenny said.

“Oh, good God! This is the money for the orphanage(孤儿院)! Thank you!”

After doing her brother's housework for three months, Jenny finally got a Happy Hannah doll. She was so happy because she could play with her doll and look her grandma in the eye.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项.

Have you ever unlocked a shared bike? Have you ever ordered a meal online? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short- form videos on the Internet? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.

Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.

Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&. T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn't think Motorola's product was good enough. He didn't like AT&T's idea of a car phone, either. The man had a new idea. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.

It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design the world's first cell phone. The product was called Dyna TAC. People could talk on it for 25minutes before its battery(电池)died. The phone's short battery life wasn't a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy(1,100 grams)to hold in hand for more than 25minutes!

On 3 April, 1973, Cooper made the world's first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, "I'm calling you on a cell phone. It's a real, handheld cell phone." On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They're much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress.

But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. "Keep learning all your life," he says, "or you'll lose the ability to learn-- that would be terrible!"
