I entered my third year of middle school when the new term began.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} was a new chemistry course.Before the monthly exam，I reviewed what I had learned carefully.I read the textbook and did lots of exercises，{#blank#}2{#/blank#}I still didn't do well in the exam.It made me sad.I wanted to do something{#blank#}3{#/blank#} improve my chemistry grades.

My chemistry teacher had{#blank#}4{#/blank#} conversation with me.He thought that I didn't understand and remember the basic knowledge.Then，a study group was created by him to help students like me.If we are not sure whether we understand the knowledge or what to do with the chemistry questions，we can ask him.And he is always patient with us.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} the help of my chemistry teacher and my own hard work，I improved my monthly exam scores by eight points this month.

Du Fu (712-770) is a famous poet（诗人） in ancient China. He is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (wide) known among us Chinese people. However, only a few know about him in the Western world. 

The BBC made a one-hour documentary (纪录片) called Du Fu: China's Greatest Poetin 2020. This English-language documentary gives {#blank#}2{#/blank#}excellent introduction of the great poet Du Fu. Nowadays, Du Fu {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(compare) to Dante（但丁） in Italy and Shakespeare in Britain. 

In the documentary, British historian Michael Wood travels around China to research Du's life. He visits a lot of places, such as Du Fu's birthplace and Du Fu Thatched Cottage（杜甫草堂） in Chengdu. Along the way, he interviews people, and they tell {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (fascinate) stories of Du Fu, who had a hard time in his late years{#blank#}5{#/blank#} never stopped writing or showing care and worries about{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(he) country and people. 

The documentary also explains {#blank#}7{#/blank#}Du's works have been popular for centuries. Because Chinese people pay much attention to{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (memorize) history. Du Fu, known{#blank#}9{#/blank#}China's "saint of poetry (诗圣)", had amazing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (create) in writing poems. And today about 1, 500 of his works are still for us to enjoy. They also allow us to learn about many historical events. 

I came to the United States ten years ago. At that time I always said that I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to study but things like work and kids would not allow me to start.

Actually, I knew that those were only excuses for me. What really stopped me was that I was lazy and nervous to start learning again.

One day, my son's friends {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to drop in on him, but my son refused(拒绝), because all of his friends spoke English but I didn't. He told me he was also sad {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I could never help him with his homework. That day, he also said, "Mom, believe in {#blank#}4{#/blank#} and start learning."

That night, I couldn't sleep. All night long, I thought about where I could go to study English.

After supper, I took the kids to the cinema. On the way back, we decided to take a new way to forget about the boring movie we just saw. But we were {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to find we got lost. I was trying to find our way home when I found a famous college. A week later, I went to that college. It was difficult for me {#blank#}7{#/blank#} I held on to.

One Saturday, my daughter was asked to write a story for her homework. It was about the person she admired {#blank#}8{#/blank#}. She said that the person was her Mom, because her Mom has started going to college although she was already forty.

Monday, July 1^st. 

I arrived in Penang in Malaysia this morning with my family. It was sunny and hot, so we decided {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（go）to the beach near our hotel. My sister and I tried paragliding. I felt like I was a bird. It was so {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（excite）! For lunch, we had something very special—Malaysian yellow noodles. They were delicious! In the afternoon, we {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（ride）bicycles to Georgetown. There are a lot of new {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（build）now, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} many of the old buildings are still there. In Weld Quay, a really old place in Georgetown, we saw the houses of the Chinese traders from 100 years ago. I wonder what life was tike here{#blank#}6{#/blank#} the past. I really enjoyed {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（walk）around the town.
