Sometimes, I wonder whether there was any love between my parents. They were busy trying to 1 their new business. They didn't act romantically. They didn't 2 their feelings. They just got used to the company of each other, and I 3 it as kinship (亲情), not love.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子) I sat down beside her and asked, "Is there any 4 between you and Dad?" She didn't answer at once.

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? You may think of Confucius (孔子). September 28th was his birthday. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people today still remember and 1 him.

Judy is my best friend. She studies at Happy Junior High School. She always gets up early at 6:40. She usually has breakfast at about 7 o'clock. Her mother often makes her breakfast, but sometimes her mother is busy and Judy makes her own breakfast. Her first lesson starts at 8 o'clock. She is never late for school. She is good at Math and English. After school, she often plays sports with her classmates. She arrives home at 5 p.m. She finishes all her homework before supper. After supper, she does some reading. She goes to bed at 9 o'clock.

② Turpan (吐鲁番) is a city in Xinjiang. In Turpan, the sun shines for a long time every day and there is little rain. It is like a desert. The highest temperature in summer can be 49℃. You can even boil (煮) an egg on the ground. 

③Lhasa (拉萨) is the capital city of Tibet. The city is at a high altitude (海拔). It's sunny most of the time. The sun is so strong that the rain in summer does not last long. If you travel to Lhasa, you need to drink a lot of water because you often feel thirsty. 

④ The coldest city in China is Genhe in Inner Mongolia. It is very cold in winter. The coldest temperature is -58℃. The water- vapor you breathe out turns into ice at once. It is dangerous to stay outside for a long time. 

⑤ Ya'an is a city in Sichuan. It rains nearly 300 days a year and it's always very warm. The plen- tiful (大量的) rain not only brings fresh air, but also makes the city beautiful, as the rain helps green plants grow. It is a wonderful place to live in. 

"Oh, boys, boys, don't throw stones at that poor bird, " said an old grey- headed man. 

"Why, sir?" said a little boy. "She makes such a scream that we can't stand her. ""Yes, but she uses the voice that she was born with. And it is probably as wonderful to her friends as yours is to those who love you. Besides, I am afraid the stone will rebound(反弹) and hurt you as long as you live!"

"Rebound! We don't understand you, sir!" "Well, come and I will tell you a story. ""Is it a true story?" "Yes. Every word is true. "

"Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones as I had no other boys very near me to play with. I threw them till I became very accurate (精确的) in my aim. "

"One day, I went to work for an aged couple named Hamilton. They were very kind to everybody and everything. Few people had so many swallows(燕子) making their nests(鸟巢) under their houses. Few had so many pets that seemed to love the couple. "

"For seven years a bird had come. After the long winter, the bird built her nest in the same place and raised her young ones there. She had just returned on the day that I went there to work. "

"During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. She sat upon a stick near her nest, and looked at me trustfully. I found a nice stone and threw it with my best skill. "

"It shot(击中) the bird on the head, and she dropped dead!"

"I was sorry as soon as I saw her fall. But the thing was done. All day long her mate flew about, and the mate was so sad that he made my heart ache. Why had I taken a life that was so innocent(无辜的), and hurt the poor mate so deeply?"

"I said nothing to the old couple about it. But, through a grandchild, they found it out. Though they never said a word to me about that, they mourned the bird and buried(埋葬) it. I could never look them in the face afterwards. Oh, I had told them how sorry I was!"

"They have been dead for many, many years. But don't you see how that stone rebounded and hit me? How deep it made upon my memory! How deep upon my conscience(良知)! My dear boys, how I want to give a great deal today if I could do something for that poor bird!"

"For fifty years I have carried it in my memory. I have never spoken of it before. Yet if what I have now said shall stop you from throwing a stone that may rebound and deeply hurt your conscience, I shall have no regret. "

The boys at once dropped the stones they had in their hands.
