Watermelons are one of the most popular fruits in China. It's said that Chinese people1 nearly 70% of the watermelons on the earth. As we enjoy the sweet (甜的) watermelons, we have to2 a great woman Wu Mingzhu. This 92-year-old3 has devoted (致力) her life to growing melons in China.

Wu grew up in Wuhan. In the eyes of others, Wu should have worked as a teacher after finishing university in 1953, but she4 to go to Xinjiang. She thought Xinjiang was a good place for her to do something5 . In 1955, Wu went to Xinjiang to study melons.6 it was hard to live and work there at the time, she didn't give up (放弃). She spent three years7 Xinjiang and found 44 kinds of melons.

In the 1990s, Wu and her team cultivated (培育) "8424", a great kind of watermelon in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Then Wu brought it to the north of China.8 , Wu went to more places to study melons.

Thanks to her, most places in China grow melons now. The yield (产量) is high and the9 is naturally low (低), so people can eat melons as they wish. Wu's work has made a great difference to the growing of melons in China. "My life is to grow a few melons and10 the sweetness of melons to people," Wu always says.

A Hello, I'm Cindy. I have three good fricnds. They are Linda, Bill and Bob. Linda likes carrots and bananas. She doesn't like hamburgers or ice-cream. She thinks they are not healthy. She eats two eggs and a banana for breakfast. Bill likes salad and chicken but he doesn't like ice-cream. And he always has chicken and tomatoes for dinner. Bob likes hamburgers and ice-cream. He doesn't like tomatoes. He has lunch at school. He has hamburgers, fish and oranges for lunch. 

I'm David. When I was 13, my parents decided that I should go to England to improve my English. I had never been to other countries before, so I felt a little worried. My parents prepared everything for my journey. My plane was due(预定) to leave at 9:30 am and arrive in two hours. I phoned the English family who I would stay with and they told me they would wait for me at the airport.

Unluckily my plane to London was delayed(推迟). I tried to phone the English family again but I couldn't speak to them because they had already left home for the airport.

When I arrived in London, it was already 1:30 pm. I went to get my luggage(行李) but I couldn't find it. I became very worried. Luckily, the airport workers were very helpful and efficient. I didn't wait long — they found it 10 minutes later.

My English family were quite kind. I learned a lot of English because I spent most of the days talking in English. I played computer games with the little boy in my English family. I also taught him how to play chess. Sometimes I told him stories I learned from my family.

I missed my family during my stay in London, but I also felt sad when my stay came to an end. My English family held a party for me. I enjoyed it very much. I'll never forget that summer in London! It is one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had.

Lily：You mean the Golden Sun Bird. I know that. When the main torch was lit by torchbearers（火炬手），four golden birds and the sun also{#blank#}9{#/blank#}brightly. 

Li Hua：Because it symbolizes hope and brightness，we{#blank#}10{#/blank#}it as the logo（徽标） of the sports event. Moreover，I hope you can have a good trip in Chengdu!

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

When Emma woke up, she knew it was going to be one of those days. She felt under the weather - a cold had taken hold of her. 1 , she needed to brave the storm to work. Emma2 herself out of bed and got ready for work. Then she put on her raincoat and rushed out into the 3 rain.
