④The Chinese lion dance goes back more than a thousand years ago and there are many myths and legends surrounding this practice.
⑤However, the most famous one is that of the story of Nian, the monster. Nian destroyed villages year after year. Finally, one year, a lion beat and scared the monster away. Nian was angry and decided to return the next year when he was sure that the lion would be gone by then. Instead, the villagers thought of a great idea. They created a costume in the shape of a lion and two villagers used it to scare him away. The legend also says that loud noises from the drum, other instruments, and firecrackers helped scare Nian away. Red is worn during the New Year's celebration because it was also believed that the cruel beast was afraid of the colour red.
⑥Another story says that it was a visiting monk who managed to control the terrible beast by tying a red ribbon around its body. From then on, instead of destroying the village, he used his power to act as a protector.
