Once upon a time, there was a family with 8 children living in a village. Two of the children, both boys, loved painting very much, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the family was so poor that it was impossible to send both of them to study at art school.

After many discussions, the two boys finally came up with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} idea. They would toss (抛) a coin. The loser would go down into the mines (矿井) and support his brother with his pay. Then, when the brother who won the toss finished his studies, in four years, he would pay the school fee for the other brother {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (study) at the college.

One of the brothers, Albrecht Durer, won the toss and his brother Jack went down the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (danger) mines. Durer worked with all his heart and his paintings were much better than those of most of his {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (teacher). He made a lot of money for his paintings.

Durer {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (return). When he told Jack he could go to art college, Jack said {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (quiet), "The four years in the mines has done too much to my hands. It is too late. Now I can't even hold a glass."

To show his love to his brother, Durer drew his brother's hands {#blank#}8{#/blank#} palms (手掌) together and thin fingers towards the sky. He called his drawing simply Hands, but the whole world almost quickly opened their {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (heart) to the great work and renamed it The Praying Hands.

A doctor entered the hospital as soon as possible after being called in for an important surgery (外科手术).

He found the boy's father in the hall waiting worriedly. 

On seeing him, the father cried out, "Why did you take all this time to come? Don't you know that my son is in danger? Don't you have any sense of duty?"

The doctor smiled and said, "I am sorry. I wasn't in the hospital and I came as fast as I could after receiving the call and now, I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work."

"Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now? Would you calm down? If your own son dies while waiting for a doctor, then what will you do?" said the father angrily. The doctor smiled again and replied, "We will do our best and you should also pray (祈祷) for your son's healthy life."

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happily, "Thank goodness! Your son is saved!" And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his way running by saying, "If you have any questions, ask the nurse."

"Couldn't he wait some minutes so that I can ask about my son's state?" shouted the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face, "His son died yesterday in a road accident. He was at the burial (葬礼) when we called him for your son's surgery. And now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's burial."

Yu Chuanya is a ballet（芭蕾舞）dancer from Shenyang. She began learning ballet at the age of 4. With a strong interest in it, she took dance classes three times a week. "In fact, my physical condition was not good. But I loved ballet, and I never thought of giving up. My mother always supports（支持）me. She encourages me to face challenges and have confidence in myself. My father is also supportive of me," Yu says.

In 2005, Yu went to study at Beijing Dance Academy. She put a lot of hard work into learning and practicing ballet. After she graduated（毕业）, she returned to Shenyang and joined Liaoning Ballet Troupe.

Since then, ballet dancing has become an important part of Yu's life. She has performed the lead roles in many ballets. She has also been invited to perform in Russia, Canada and South Africa.

Eight Heroines is one of Yu's favorite ballets. It is a story of eight women soldiers（士兵）who gave up their lives to protect our country. Yu performed the lead role, Leng Yun. To do her best to show the feelings of the character, Yu read lots of information to learn about the story of Leng. Eight Heroines has been staged（上演）many times since 2014. In 2017, it was staged in Russia and people there said it was great.

"Performers are the communicators of culture. I believe we Chinese ballet dancers will perform more ballets in the future to better tell the stories of China on the world stage," Yu says hopefully.

On August 3, 2024, Zheng Qinwen made history at the Paris Olympics because she won the gold medal in women's singles tennis. She beat a player from Croatia and became the first Asian(亚洲的) tennis player to win in this event. It was only China's second Olympic gold medal in tennis, after Li Na and Sun Tiantian won a women's doubles title(女子双打) at Athens 2004. It was the first in singles.

 Zheng's body hurt badly during the match but she kept playing until the very last minute. After her big win, Zheng carried the Chinese national flag around the tennis court and then carefully placed it on her chair. Zheng Qinwen sard, National honor(荣誉) is above personal success."

 When Zheng Qinwen was a child, she really wanted to win one gold medal for China. She always dreamed of one day joining Yao Ming, I is Xiang and Ii Na, and to be as successful and important as they were. So she trained really hard to make her dream come true. Zheng hopes more children will dream of playing tennis, keep believing in their dreams and work hard to stand on such a stage in the future.

James and Isabella were classmates. One day, on {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (they) way home by bus, James wanted to play his favorite game. While he was asking a question and talking excitedly, Isabella sat there in {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (silent). She thought James was such {#blank#}3{#/blank#} chatterbox（话痨） that she didn't want to talk with him.

 Finally, I got to school. The teacher introduced me to the whole class. Then he asked me to sit{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(在……旁边) a girl. I felt so nervous. Soon the bell rang for the geography class. Their textbooks were different! Just I wanted to ask teacher for help. A geography book with a national  63. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(旗帜) on its cover was in front of me. "Let's share", the friendly girl next to me said, "Hi, I'm Carrie. I'm {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(加拿大人)." To my surprise, it was the girl that I helped this morning. Later on, we became good friends.
