I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.

"Master! Master!" he cried, "There's a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the shore in a boat!"

I jumped up and ran with him down to the shore. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates(海盗)!"Don't let them see you, Friday!" I called, "We'll hide in the trees and watch. "

There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners(囚犯). Their arms were tied with rope, but their legs were free and they could walk. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.

Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.

"Don't be afraid, "I said. "I'm an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you. "

The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.

Perhaps they thought I was a wild man myself, in my strange clothes made of animals' skins, and with my long hair and beard.

Then the oldest man spoke, "I am the captain of that ship, "he said, "and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me.

Now they're going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island. "

"Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?"

"Only two, "he answered, "and they've left those on the boat. "

"All right, "I said. "We'll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England. "

Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

In a common kindergarten (幼儿园), Miss Smith was bringing her new 1 into the classroom. The children sat on the chairs in order, 2 for the teacher to teach them the first lesson.

Miss Smith stood in front of the children with a smile. A lot of 3 were on the teacher's desk. "Children, may I tell you a story?"

Alex set his lunch tray on the table near his friend Leo. "Trade you some fries for some pretzels" Alex said. 

"Deal," said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox. 

Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo's lunchbox. 

"What's that?" asked Daniel, another boy in their class. 

Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: "Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom."

Daniel snorted. "Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox?"

"Yes," Leo said. 

Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.

"Give it back to Leo," said Alex. 

"Well, who wants a note anyway?" Daniel said. 

"I do," said Leo. 

Alex liked getting notes too. 

Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor. 

Alex picked it up. He handed it back to Leo, who put it into his pocket. 

On the bus that afternoon, Alex thought about what had happened. 

Alex's older brother, Mateo, arrived home just after Alex did. "How was your day, little dude?" Mateo asked. 

"A boy in my class was mean to Leo," Alex said. He explained the way Daniel had acted. 

Mateo shook his head. "How would Daniel like it if people picked on him for getting a note?"

"Daniel never gets notes," Alex said. Suddenly, he had an idea. "That's it! I know how to help Leo and Daniel."

Alex explained his idea to Mateo. Mateo agreed to help, and they worked on the plan all afternoon. 

At lunchtime the next day, Alex hurried to the cafeteria. He set out 23 folded pieces of paper on a table by the entrance. Each piece of paper had the name of a classmate on it. 

"What are these?" asked Mira. 

"We all have notes," said Sabrina. 

Alex watched as Daniel picked up the note with his name on it. Alex knew that the note said Daniel,  ▲  Have a great day.

Alex saw Daniel smile as he put the note into his pocket. 

"Great idea, Alex," said Leo. 

"Now everyone knows how it feels to get a lunch note," Alex said.

Sometimes, I wonder whether there was any love between my parents. They were busy trying to 1 their new business. They didn't act romantically. They didn't 2 their feelings. They just got used to the company of each other, and I 3 it as kinship (亲情), not love.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (缝被子) I sat down beside her and asked, "Is there any 4 between you and Dad?" She didn't answer at once.

I thought I had hitt her. At last my mother said, "Susan, look at this thread(线). Sometimes it 5 , but most of it disappears in the quilt. It makes the quilt 6 and durable (耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can 7 be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there."

I listened carefully but I didn't understand her until the next spring. My father suddenly got seriously 8 and he had to stay in hospital for at least one month. My mother took really good care of him without any 9 . 

After they returned home, my mother helped my father walk slowly down the country road every day for rehabilitation training (康复训练). They two, hand in hand, supported each other. Once, I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But the 10 is that love is just a thread that holds a family together.

For some teenagers, being an adult is the 1 thing in the world. Adults don't need to do homework or take exams. They do what they like and make money. How 2 ! But is it true? 

Last month, Grade Seven students at Sunshine School had a taste of the adult world. The teachers asked them 3 a piece of special homework called "Working with your parents for one day". 

Wujing's mother works as 4 ticket collector in a park. At 6 am, the 14-year-old girl set out for work with her mother. It was dark and cold. Before the park opened, they did some cleaning and prepared for the 5 coming. When the visitors came, they greeted with a smile. After standing for the whole day, Wu felt worn out. 

"She is busier and more tired than what I thought. I should help her more." said Wu. 

Li Shiyi, 14, spent the whole day helping in a car. 6 father is a taxi driver. She had to pick calls and 7 change back. Li thought it would be easy to work in a car. 8 soon she found that they didn't even have time 9 lunch. 

"Now I know how 10 it is to make money," Li said. "We should care for our parents more and never waste money." 

I am Susan. My favourite place is a farm. My father buys the farm. Every summer holiday my friends and I go to the farm. We enjoy our time there. 

The farm has a big house. It has six rooms and a big kitchen. In the living room there is a beautiful fireplace (壁炉), so we feel warm. Around the house there are flowers and trees. The trees are big and very old. They look very green in summer. I feel cool under the trees. Many birds' songs make me feel happy. 

My favourite time about the farm is the night. I enjoy looking at the stars. I spend a lot of time after dinner talking with my parents. We often sit outside the house under the beautiful sky and tell old stories.
