Li Hua and Wang Tao are two students of Class 4, Grade 7. They both like sports. Li Hua is a basketball fan. His favorite sport is playing basketball. Yao Ming is his favorite basketball player. He wants to be a basketball player like Yao Ming when he grows up. Li Hua is on the school basketball team now. Every Friday afternoon, Li Hua plays basketball with his classmates after class.

Li Hua's friend Wang Tao isn't good at basketball, but he is very good at soccer. Ronaldo is his favorite soccer player. Wang Tao is on the soccer team. He plays soccer with his teammates (队友) every Tuesday afternoon.

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water alone. It's called Seatrac.

Seatrac was designed to solve this problem. It is a chair on a moving ramp (斜坡) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. In the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. The chair is operated by remote ( 远 程 ) control. When the person wants to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the ramp. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim.

The idea came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn't like to be carried into the sea as if he were a "sack of potatoes".

Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a university to design the system. In no time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems.

TOBEA tried to make the system easy to manage. It is solar powered, and can keep running even if the electricity goes out. It can be packed up and stored when swimming season ends.

TOBEA also offers other special equipment to help disabled people enjoy Greece's beaches: changing rooms, bathrooms, and shady resting areas. It has even created a website showing where beaches with these special services can be found.

This summer, Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The service in Greece is being offered for free. The government and the EU have helped pay for it, they hope Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.

Hangzhou, together with five other cities in Zhejiang, hosted the 19th Asian Games from Sept 23 to Oct 8, 2023. The Games were very "smart" with the use of many exciting technologies. Let's have a look!

The venue (会场) can change for different kind of weather.

The venue for the tennis finals (决赛) of the Hangzhou Asian Games is sometimes called the "Small Lotus (莲花)". On the top of the stadium, there are eight "petals" (花瓣). They can open and close freely. It's built this way for different kinds of weather.

Drones can help with first aid during the Asian Games.

What if there's an accident during the game and the athletes need first aid? Drones (无人机) can be used to send things over. They can fly as far as 20 kilometers and travel 16 meters in one second. Using a drone saves about 60 percent of the time, according to the drone maker Antwork.

This AI system keeps athletes' food safe.

Every dish at the Asian Games should be safe and healthy to eat. In the kitchen of the athletes' village in Hangzhou, there is a special system that can tell people's faces. If a "stranger" goes into the kitchen, an alarm will go off to let people know.

One year, a college in the Unites States announced that it would offer a lot of money for the pure white marigold(金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in the nature, besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to get the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.

One normal day after 20 years, the college received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. It turned out to be anold woman of over 70 years old. Some experts in the college doubted it , but in order not to let her down, those seedsfinally took root(根) in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year: the field was covered by pure white marigold.

Therefore, the old woman who was always unknown to the public became a newfocus.

The old woman was a flower-lover. When she read the announcement 20 years ago, she got very excited like others. But her right children were totally against her decision. After all, a woman who never knew the seed genetics(遗传学)  couldn't complete what the experts could never do, so her thought was only a daydream.

Still, the old woman didn't change her mind and went on working. She planted some of the most common seeds and took good care of them. A year later, when the marigold came out, she chose one faintest(最暗淡的) from those golden and brown flowers and get the best seed. The next year, she again grew them and chose…. Day after day, year after year, through many seasons, the old woman's husband died, her children flew far and high, a lot of things happened in her life, but only the desire to grow the pure white marigold took root in her heart.

Finally, after 20 years on the day we all know, in the gardenshe saw a marigold which was not nearly white, but as white as sliver or snow.

A problem even experts couldn't deal with was solved by an old woman who didn't understand genetics. Wasn't it a miracle?

To take root in the heart, even the most common seed can grow into a miracle!

①Google's company, DeepMind, recently announced that their research team has created a ping-pong robot. This robot can play at the same level as human amateur (业余) players.

②The research team wrote about their work on a website called arXiv. A team member said, "This is the first learning robot that can play ping-pong as well as human amateurs. " The robot has a six-axis robotic arm that can move back and forth and side to side on a rail at the bottom.

③In 29 games against human players, the robot won 13 times, which is a win rate of 45%. The human players were all new to the robot, and their skill levels ranged from beginners to advanced players. The researchers said, "The robot lost all the games against high-level players but won all the games against beginners and 55% of the games against intermediate players."

④To make the robot play at a human level, the team used a layered and modular strategy(分层和模块化的策略).This means the robot can do basic skills like forehand topspin and backhand blocks. It also has a high-level controller that acts like a brain. During a game, it can choose the best moves based on the game situation, the robot's abilities, and the opponent's skills. After the game, the robot can analyze (分析) the data and improve its skills.

⑤The researchers noted that the robot still has some weaknesses. For example, it is not very good at backhand shots and has trouble with fast, high, low, or strongly spinning balls. They plan to improve the robot by making better control algorithms(算法)and better hardware.
