I remember the first time I got on a horse. I was two years old and we were watching a friend of the family ride. My mom agreed to let me take a short ride around the ground with the friend and that was it' I became crazy about having a horse. From then on, I drove my parents mad beg­ging for a horse. Whenever I saw a horse, I would beg even harder.

    When I was four years old, problems appeared in my life. I had Selective Mutism (选择性缄默症). This is an unusual childhood disorder (失调) in which children stop speaking in certain social situations, many times at around the age of four. I spoke to my parents as usual, my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At most, I might very quietly speak to a friend.

    My parents looked for a cure. One psychologist (心理医生) had an idea. Having discussed his plan with my parents in advance, one day I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given a chance to work for what I wanted. I couldn't believe my good luck, but I could not answer. I just stood there. Finally, I was allowed to whisper (低声说) the answer in my mother's ear. "A horse," was all I could say.

    I was to get a little horse, but before we could even start looking, I had to try to talk. I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to finish. I had to answer the phone five times every week, something I had never done before. I did everything that was asked of me and the day came when my parents found the perfect horse. His name was Sequoia, a strong little chestnut (栗子马). He was perfect, of course, and I fell in love immediately. It truly was a dream come true. When I was with Sequoia, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and life.

    By connecting with them, I have learned to hug what I was once not able to do and I found my voice back.

Last night，John went to a welcome party for foreign students. In the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}something funny happened. He met a Japanese boy {#blank#}2{#/blank#}was called Sato. He didn't know {#blank#}3{#/blank#}the Japanese are supposed to greet each other. As soon as he held out his hand, the boy {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. He just stood there, embarrassed, with his hand out. But finally he {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the bow.

Last weekend, Katie met her French friend Marie for the first time. She did the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}as John did, holding out her hand. To her great surprise, Marie kissed her on {#blank#}7{#/blank#} sides of her face. She also felt embarrassed. Later she came to know that {#blank#}8{#/blank#}people are supposed to kiss when they meet each other.

Li Hua went to the Capital International Airport to meet Tony Garcia from Colombia and Julia Smith {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Britain. After Li met them and introduced {#blank#}10{#/blank#}to each other，Tony went {#blank#}11{#/blank#}to Julia, touched her shoulder and kissed her on the cheek. She stepped{#blank#}12{#/blank#} appearing surprised and put up her hands, as if in defense(防卫)!

These actions are not good {#blank#}13{#/blank#}bad, but they are simply ways that cultures have developed. Studying international customs can certainly help avoid difficulties in today's world of cultural crossroads!

Liu proves herself again

 Who is the best female(女性的) table tennis player in China? It is probably Liu Shiwen. Liu Shiwen was born on April 12, 1991 in Fushun, Liaoning. Her hobbies are watching US TV shows and learning English. Her best table tennis skill is backhand(反手击球) instead of forehand.

 On Oct 20th, Liu won her fifth singles title(单打冠军) at the Women's World Cup in Chengdu, Sichuan province. She is the first person in history to win so many titles at this event.

" It's very important for me," Liu said. "I won four titles before when I was much younger. I had no fear at all."

 At 28 years old, Liu is now under greater pressure. She won the world championship(世界锦标赛), but then lost several tour matches (巡回赛). She needed to prove herself once again. She was able to do so in the end. Her secret was to not think about her losses."I just played the game like it was the world championships or even the Olympics," Liu said.

In ancient（古代的） China, people have three names: their family name, given name, and courtesy name（字）. For example, we know Li Bai is a famous poet（诗人）. His family name is Li, his given name is Bai, and his courtesy name is Taibai. 

People use their given names when they are with their family or friends. And grandparents and parents call kids their given name at home. But when people work, they use their courtesy names. 

Men get their courtesy names when they are 20 years old. Women get their courtesy names after they get married（结婚）. 

People's courtesy names have something to do with（与……有关）their given names. For example, Zhuge Liang（诸葛亮）'s given name is Liang. It means（意思是）"bright（明亮的）". His courtesy name is Kongming. And the meaning is"very bright".
